Our Croatian member Centar za edukaciju i informiranje potrošača cooperated with the Srednjika sports summer camp in Osijek to teach young campers about food safety and consumer protection at the European level. 🌱

Through fun and interactive games, the program called “Food Journey” helps children understand how food reaches their table and how to make smart and safe food choices. 🚜

The training focused on the importance of proper food storage to stay healthy and the benefits of choosing food from local farms. Participants also learned about expiry dates and how to distinguish between "use by" and "best before" labels, which helps to reduce food waste. ♻️

Through this programme, CEIP is creating conscious generations of young consumers. 👧👦

Before we close our office for summer holidays on 31 July until 23 August included, here are a few sustainable and healthy summer tips. 🌞

🍉 Composting your food scraps instead of throwing them away contributes to less greenhouse gas emissions

♻️ Choosing reusable plates, cups, and cutlery over disposable avoids generating packaging waste

🥕 Including fresh, and seasonal ingredients into your meals supports local farmers

🥗 Alternating meat or fish with plant-based protein sources such as legumes, and include vegetables, fruits, and whole grains provide you with sustainable, healthy and nutritious meals

🌿Cooking, eating minimally processed foods and avoiding products high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats help support your physical and mental well-being

Summer is also about enjoying a few treats along the way! 🍦

SAFE is involved in several EU projects that promote healthy eating, alternative and sustainable protein consumption and food waste reduction: Preventia, FEASTS, LIKE A PRO, Rosetta Project EU and EPIC SHIFT

📱 France has become the first EU country to ban social media access for children under 15. The measure aims to protect young people from the harmful effects of platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram, using the European Commission’s age-verification systems to enforce the restrictions.

🚫 Other European countries, including Spain and the United Kingdom, also plan to restrict social media access to minors.

⚠️ Social media algorithms can contribute to body dissatisfaction and increase the risk of eating disorders by flooding young users with weight-loss content, appearance-focused trends, beauty filters and other promotional content that may encourage unhealthy or compulsive eating behaviours.

🍽️ The Digital Services Act, a European regulation that establishes a unified legal framework for online platforms, enhancing user rights, platform accountability, and transparency, is an opportunity for the EU to take action against online harms and help prevent eating disorders.

As part of our partnership with Healthy Food Healthy Planet, SAFE joined a foresight learning journey to explore the future of food systems and strengthen collective thinking on emerging challenges and opportunities.

Building on this experience, SAFE delivered an in-house foresight training to enhance our staff ability to anticipate change, identify trends, and develop strategies for healthier, more sustainable food systems.🧩

The first part introduced the Three Horizons framework, applied to food systems.

📈Horizon 1 (H1) represents the current food system and its challenges
💡Horizon 2 (H2) involves emerging ideas and innovations that are being tried out to move things forward
🌿 Horizon 3 (H3) is a visionary space that defines the future we want to create

💭In the second part, we applied the model to SAFE’s own work and strategic priorities. This led to engaging discussions around our shared ambitions for the next 10 years.

🤝This workshop was an opportunity to pause and reflect on our achievements and brainstorm on our next steps and priorities that will support SAFE’s continued efforts towards a more sustainable and resilient food system!

On 28 May, our Polish member, the Uniwersytet Rzeszowski, delivered a food literacy workshop for local seniors as part of our project . 🤝

Focused on supporting older adults facing health challenges, reduced independence and limited knowledge on nutrition information and food labels, the session used practical exercises to build skills in nutrition, food safety and label reading. 📚

The participants left feeling more confident, better informed and willing to apply these skills in daily life. 🍲

A nice example of how nutrition education can help reduce inequalities and support healthy ageing. Healthy eating habits can be learnt at any age! 🍽️
