We are delighted to see our partner ΕΕΚΕ: Ένωση Εργαζομένων Καταναλωτών Ελλάδας continuing to deliver engaging and successful food education sessions in schools across Greece as part of our Food4Inclusion project. 🍎

Pupils at the 23rd Primary School of Patras, the 1st Experimental Middle School of Karditsa, and the 1st High School of Veroia took part in interactive learning on how to make healthier food choices, avoid common food marketing traps, and recognise the importance of exercise for physical and mental wellbeing. 🥗 🧠

World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate change.

Intensive agriculture practices affect climate change by contributing to deforestation, and land degradation. Unsustainable livestock production is one of the sources of methane emissions, which have a higher warming potential than CO2. 🌾

At the same time, climate change is making it harder to feed the world. Shifts in temperature and rainfalls disrupt crop cycles, increase extreme weather events, and affect the spread of pests and diseases. 🌡️

At SAFE we support sustainable agriculture that feeds the world while protecting nature. 🌱

The Preventia project coordinated by SAFE works to address the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Europe with a holistic approach, encouraging good nutrition but also regular physical activity. 🥗

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), walking and cycling can provide a form of transport while reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and even premature death. 🚴‍♀️

To address the causes of NCDs, the Healthy Lifestyles for Europe project (HL4EU) has developed policy recommendations promoting a coordinated and preventive approach across sectors including health, sport, mobility, education, environment and community development. 🏃‍♀️

Around 20 million people in Europe are living with an eating disorder, and 1 in 10 will be affected in their lifetime, especially at a young age.🧑‍🤝‍🧑

📊 A 2021 Belgian study highlighted the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 17% declaring they had lost control of their eating habits, and 12% saying eating dominated their lives.

On World Eating Disorders Action Day, we break the stigma surrounding eating disorders and we encourage policy changes. 🍽️

At SAFE, we call for stronger EU action to improve prevention, support and online protection. 📱

📱New research highlights the negative impacts “fitspiration” content on social media has on young adults.

⚠️ This trend promotes healthy diets and exercise, but the study found that exposure can encourage unrealistic body standards, body dissatisfaction, lower self-esteem, and drive eating disorders.

📢 We call for the review of the EU Digital Services Act to explicitly mention eating disorders. It should regulate harmful content targeting young people by enforcing rules on influencer content and negative role models that can contribute to eating disorders, as well as limiting algorithms that amplify these trends.

🐝Bees and other pollinators are essential to keep people and the planet healthy. They help plants grow by spreading pollen, producing the fruits and seeds we consume. Without them, plant biodiversity would drop, affecting ecosystems and agriculture.

⚠️ Today, pollinators are declining, mostly due to the widespread use of toxic pesticides in intensive farming. The European feed and food safety omnibus proposal puts the lives of bees even more at risk, allowing harmful pesticides to stay on the market longer and prioritising the profits of the pesticide industry over public health and nature.

🌱 SAFE calls for a shift towards sustainable agriculture to protect bees and biodiversity, and ultimately to sustain life on our planet.

Eating disorders are about mental health, not just food. 💬

Young people are most affected. Eating disorders are triggered by unhealthy food environments, pressure from social media, social standards, and rising anxiety. 📱

We need stronger rules to protect them, especially from misleading content and harmful algorithms. ⚖️

Eating disorders are rising, but are too often unrecognised. 💬
Misconceptions prevent effective diagnosis and support. Eating disorders are not about food, and they are not a choice. They are serious mental health conditions. 🧠

Stigma and body shaming only worsen them.

We need better awareness, earlier support, and stronger care systems.⚖️

Visiting a supermarket is not a neutral experience. 🛒 Their spaces are designed to trigger impulsive purchases: from lighting and colour codes, to music, smells, and pricing. This is how we can drop by for a quick errand and end up with our trolleys full of products we don’t really need or want. 🧃 🍪

Adoc - Associazione Difesa Orientamento Consumatori, a consumers’ association from Italy, and a SAFE member, is warning their members about how to spot some of the techniques used in marketing psychology, to help consumers stay aware of the subtle manipulations at play among the supermarket shelves.

We support this timely initiative!
