From commitments to implementation: eels move forward.

Eight months after the landmark CITES agreement on anguillids in Samarkand, the conversation has entered a new phase. At the recent CITES Animals Committee meeting in Geneva, governments focused on turning these commitments into practical action through better science, stronger traceability, improved enforcement, and continued international cooperation.

For the Sustainable Eel Group, this is an encouraging shift. The establishment of a dedicated intersessional working group, alongside new work on Non-Detriment Findings, traceability and sustainable management, shows that the future of eel conservation is being approached pragmatically, through evidence-based policymaking and constructive collaboration.

A new perspective on European eel conservation.

Tackling eel trafficking requires stronger coordination

Earlier this week, the Sustainable Eel Group attended a screening of Billion Dollar Babies at the European Parliament, hosted by MEP Niclas Herbst. The event brought together policymakers, scientists, enforcement agencies, and conservation organisations to discuss the illegal trade in European eel and the steps needed to secure the species' recovery.

During the panel discussion, SEG Science Lead Willem Dekker argued that the foundations of EU eel policy are already in place, and have proven capable of halting the long-term decline in recruitment, but that progress is now being held back by incomplete implementation and fragmented governance. His message was clear: that stronger EU coordination, supported by a dedicated advisory committee, could help move eel conservation beyond political deadlock and towards genuine recovery.

Measuring the social impact of responsible management.

Today the Sustainable Eel Group announces the launch of a study to assess and better understand the social impact of SEG and its Standard. The study will examine how responsible eel production contributes to communities, livelihoods and the long-term resilience of supply chains, providing an evidence-based perspective on the broader benefits of sustainable practices.

This new, community-centred research represents an important step in recognising that sustainability extends beyond environmental outcomes. By engaging with Standard holders and stakeholders across the sector, the initiative will help identify opportunities to strengthen social value, support knowledge and culture sharing initiatives, and demonstrate the collective contribution of responsible eel production to people and communities.

The Sustainable Eel Group has chosen a new form of independent recognition for its SEG Standard for the European eel, Anguilla anguilla. With the introduction of the new SEG Standard, version 8.0 in October 2026, and following 10 years of continuous development and improvement, SEG will move away from its previous pathway with ISEAL and adopt an accreditation structure based on ISO 17065.

This decision marks a new phase in the further professionalisation of the SEG Standard and is driven by one central objective: strengthening the practical protective impact of the standard for the European eel in a rapidly changing market and policy environment.

Glass eel prices in Asia drop suddenly

In recent months, the market value of glass eels has declined sharply as production in China has expanded beyond current demand. The significant number of glass eels entering the supply chain over the past few seasons have now reached market size, contributing to oversupply and downward pressure on the price of wild eels as well as eel meat and processed eel products.

The adjustment reflects a broader pattern in which oversupply is followed by rapid correction, with limited coordination between production and demand. Past cycles suggest that as prices recover, constraints on key species may re-emerge, prompting substitution across species and renewed pressure on already strained stocks.

Eel trafficking linked to regional instability

The illegal trade in eels is becoming increasingly connected to organised crime, weak governance, and insecurity across the Caribbean. Recent developments in Haiti highlight how environmental pressures and criminal networks are reinforcing each other in complex and concerning ways.

SEG welcomes the recent deployment of a Gang Suppression Force to Port au Prince, but responding effectively will require more than enforcement alone. Stronger regional cooperation, improved governance, and sustainable management of fisheries resources all have a role to play in addressing both the trade and its wider consequences.
