The contents of this page are AGE sole responsibility. The purpose of AGE work is to voice and promote the interests of the 150 million inhabitants aged 50+ in the European Union and to raise awareness of the issues that concern them most. It seeks to give a voice to older and retired people in the EU policy debates, through the active participation of their representative organisations at EU, national, regional and local levels, and provides a European platform for the exchange of experience and best practices. Its work focuses on a wide range of policy areas that impact on older and retired people. These include issues of anti-discrimination, employment of older workers and active ageing, social protection, pension reforms, social inclusion, health, elder abuse, intergenerational solidarity, research, accessibility of public transport and of the build environment, and new technologies (ICT). The Platform takes also active part in several EU projects.

This 8-month, fully funded Fellowship by Belonging Forum supports individuals from diverse backgrounds to work with partner organisations on applied research projects that strengthen belonging and social connectedness.

Today, members of the European Council are meeting in Brussels to discuss Europe’s competitiveness and the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). However, the cuts proposed by the Irish Presidency have alarmed the culture, media and civil society sectors.

Designed in cooperation with its Irish members, Age & Opportunity and Active Retirement Ireland, the event provided an overview of the Irish policy landscape on ageing, while reflecting the diversity of older people’s experiences.

🚨 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗡 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀

Last Thursday, the European Parliament held a plenary debate on the state of play of older persons’ rights and the European Union’s engagement in advancing them.

Members of the Parliament highlighted the work of the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 (𝗜𝗚𝗪𝗚) 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗡 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and the ongoing process towards drafting an international legally binding instrument that would protect the rights of older persons on an equal basis with everyone else.

🔸 Executive Vice-President of the Commission, Raffaele Fitto, emphasised that the EU is deeply committed to the rights of older people and supports Member States in the process.

🔸 From the Christian-Democrats, MEP Jagna Marczułajtis-Walczak called for "a document that will really protect our rights, because old age awaits all of us", asking the Commission how it intends to implement the future rights.

🔸 MEP Idoia.Mendia said "We need a Convention that ensures effective and universal protection, that combats ageism and removes the barriers that still limit the rights of older people", calling on the Commission to be actively involved.

🔸 Members from all political groups supported the future Convention.

Philippe Seidel Leroy, AGE’s European Parliament Liaison Officer, attended the debate and had the opportunity to present the process to the 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽. A special thank you to the 𝗘𝗣 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 for championing and securing this important debate.

🧠 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲-𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲
On , AGE reminds policymakers that mental health is a lifelong issue and that older persons must be included.

Mental health issues have a direct impact on a person’s physical health, as well as their economic and social situation. This is why 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 in public policy.

Ageism, loneliness, caregiving responsibilities, bereavement and barriers to services can all affect mental well-being in later life. We call for mental health policies that fully include older persons, their needs and specificities, and promote well-being at every age.

Every day, 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. Many are older workers who provide regular support to a partner, a parent, a relative or a friend while remaining in employment.

Yet, care is unpredictable, while workplaces, policies and support systems remain inflexible and poorly adapted to people’s realities.

𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 calls for a Europe where flexibility is the norm, not the exception. It is essential to help carers remain in employment, protect their wellbeing and continue providing care 🫂

𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 are essential to help carer of all ages to look after a loved one while adapting their work to caring responsibilities and preventing them from leaving the labour market prematurely.

AGE Platform Europe joins the call for 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸-𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀, ensuring that they meet the needs of workers of all ages.
