🇺🇦: On Ukraine’s Independence Day on 24 August, our affiliate Національна спілка журналістів України (НСЖУ) launched an International Advisory Council of the Journalists’ Solidarity Centers, a pro bono, non- governing advisory body.

🔴The Council, which is composed of international experts in press freedom, journalists’ safety, media resilience, media development and international cooperation - including IFJ Vice-president Jennifer Moreau (UNIFOR, Canada)- will advise NUJU on journalists’ safety, media resilience and the strategic development of its nationwide Solidarity Centers network.

🔴To date the seven Centers operate in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Sumy, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk. Four of them — in Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipro and Sumy — serve journalists working in frontline and border regions. The Centers provide assistance to journalists and media professionals across Ukraine.

The three-day workshop strengthened unions’ capacity to tackle discrimination and harassment, promote safer and more inclusive workplaces and drive lasting change through collective action.

🇷🇸: Alongside other organisations, we are raising the alarm over the spiral of violence against journalists and media workers in Serbia, which has intensified over the past weeks.

The authorities must prosecute those who attack media professionals, refraining from using dangerous rhetoric and publicly denounce any attempt to silence public interest reporting in order to put an end to the climate of impunity.

🇮🇷: On 16 August, The Iranian parliament approved the framework of a new bill that would criminalise interaction with foreign media outlets considered ‘hostile’ and would impose severe restrictions on international contact.

📢 We strongly condemn it. If enacted, the bill would further isolate Iranians and erode their right to information. We call on the authorities to drop the bill and stop intimidating journalists and their sources.
