🔴 PRESS RELEASE: EAFJD Denounces Legal Proceedings Against Catholicos Garegin II and Armenian Clergy

The European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy expresses its grave concern regarding the unprecedented legal proceedings targeting His Holiness Garegin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, alongside senior members of the clergy.

EAFJD President Kaspar Karampetian:
"The prosecution of the Catholicos of All Armenians and high-ranking clergy represents a deeply concerning escalation that bodes ill for Armenia’s democratic future and societal stability. A robust democracy does not weaponize the state apparatus or judicial mechanisms against historic institutions or internal spiritual affairs."

We call upon Armenian authorities to uphold constitutional principles, cease state interference in church governance, and respect the rule of law.

What political and legal initiatives does the Commission intend to take in order to promote the effective implementation of these international obligations?

Does the Commission intend to integrate respect for the right of return of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh among the principles guiding its political and economic relations with Azerbaijan?

Does it intend to make respect for the right of return of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh an element of its political and diplomatic action in the region, in accordance with the orders of the International Court of Justice?
