The discussion centered on navigating Armenia’s European integration and security challenges while safeguarding the rule of law and fundamental political freedoms back home. Discussions also focused on the steps and key conditions needed to achieve a fair, stable, and lasting peace in the region.

WHEN DIPLOMACY BECOMES COMPLACENCY: Diplomatic dialogue is meant to defend international law, not shield ongoing violations of fundamental human rights.
As the European Commission representatives engage in strategic talks in the South Caucasus, over 20 Armenian political prisoners and hostages remain illegally held in Baku. Treating these detentions as secondary to trade or energy relations undermines the very values the European Union represents.
Principles must not give way to complacency. The EU must use its diplomatic leverage to demand the immediate release of all Armenian political prisoners.

During the European Parliament debate on Azerbaijan, Spanish MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar (PSOE / S&D) criticized the EU’s double standards regarding Aliyev’s hereditary dictatorship.

He called on the European Union to use its full diplomatic power to defend the human rights of political prisoners in Azerbaijan, as well as the rights of the displaced Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.

🚨 BEYOND CAVIAR DIPLOMACY: Ex-German Intelligence Chief Arrested Over Links to Azerbaijan

August Hanning, former head of Germany’s BND, has been arrested for treasonous espionage. Investigators suspect he leaked classified intelligence to an Azerbaijani officer.

Baku’s infamous "caviar diplomacy" network isn't just buying politicians anymore—it's infiltrating European intelligence.

Former German intelligence chief August Hanning, who was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason, is being investigated over alleged links to Azerbaijani intelligence, according to Der Spiegel.

Hanning, 80, headed Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, the BND, from 1998 to 2005. German federal prosecutors say he is suspected of obtaining classified information and using material derived from it in contacts with a foreign intelligence official.

According to Der Spiegel, investigators believe the foreign intelligence officer involved was Azerbaijani. Hanning allegedly obtained classified BND documents from his former associate Manfred D. and used the information to prepare a written intelligence analysis intended for the Azerbaijani officer. Whether the analysis ultimately reached its intended recipient remains under investigation.

Hanning is also known to have maintained connections with Azerbaijan. He previously served on the board of the German-Azerbaijani Forum, an organization promoting relations between the two countries.

The forum has previously drawn scrutiny over its links to German politicians and Azerbaijan’s lobbying network. Several former German lawmakers have faced investigations or legal proceedings over allegations involving Azerbaijani money and political influence in Europe.

Former Bundestag members Eduard Lintner and Axel Fischer have faced bribery proceedings over alleged payments linked to Azerbaijan, while former MP Karin Strenz was previously found to have violated Council of Europe rules over undisclosed conflicts of interest connected to Azerbaijan.

German authorities arrested both Hanning and Manfred D. on October 6. Prosecutors are investigating Hanning on suspicion of treasonous espionage, obtaining state secrets, attempted treason and acting as an agent for a foreign intelligence service.

German federal prosecutors have not publicly identified the foreign state involved, but Der Spiegel reports, citing investigators, that the suspected intelligence contact was Azerbaijani.

Hanning’s lawyer has declined to comment publicly on the allegations concerning Azerbaijan.
