– Gavin Griffiths’ diabetes journey details the complexity of living with type 1 diabetes. It is a story of struggle, adaptation, and transformation. It also reflects broader themes people with diabetes experience - access to care, the role of education, and the value of community. His story also provides something equally important: reassurance that they are not alone, and that resilience can grow even in the face of ongoing challenges.

Today, on World Food Safety Day, we are reminded that the food we eat should nourish us - not make us ill.
For the close to 600 million people living with diabetes worldwide, safe food is an essential part of staying healthy and managing their condition.

This year's theme, "From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere," highlights that foodborne diseases are largely preventable through science, data and coordinated action. For people with diabetes, foodborne illness can make blood glucose management more difficult and increase the risk of serious complications.
We believe everyone should have access to food that is not only nutritious but also safe. Strong food safety systems, evidence-based policies and equitable access to healthy foods are all part of creating environments that support better health.

On World Food Safety Day, we join the global community in calling for action to ensure safe food everywhere - because no one should become ill from the food they eat.

– How can schools better support children living with diabetes? Noshaba from Pakistan shares her experience as a parent navigating the daily challenges of caring for a young child with type 1 diabetes in the school environment — from concerns around blood glucose levels and safety, to stigma, misunderstanding, and the urgent need for better diabetes awareness and staff training in schools.

Her testimonial highlights the importance of creating inclusive, supportive, and well-informed school environments where children living with diabetes can feel safe, understood, and confident.

Our Kids and Diabetes in School programme is helping drive change through greater awareness and education for schools and communities.

– Diabetic macular oedema (DME) is the leading cause of vision loss from diabetes, yet many people may not realise they are at risk until symptoms appear. In our latest D-Talk, host Dr Phyllisa Deroze is joined by Dr Matthew Cunningham, vitreoretinal specialist and Director of Clinical Research at the Florida Retina Institute, to discuss the importance of early detection, annual eye exams, and protecting vision health.
Dr Cunningham explains how DME develops, the warning signs people should look out for, and why regular dilated eye exams are critical — especially since many people affected may have no symptoms.

– Can lessons from Lebanon on mobile health in diabetes care support health systems under pressure?

In Lebanon, our Senior Fellow Dr Ola Sukkarieh’s work shows that mobile health is not simply about bringing care online. Her study used WhatsApp video calls to deliver diabetes self-management education in a setting shaped by economic crisis, conflict, displacement and overstretched health services.

The outcomes show that digital diabetes care can improve access, but only when it is built around people’s realities, trusted by communities and supported by health systems. For global diabetes care, Lebanon offers more than a case study. It offers a reminder that innovation must begin with listening.

– "Kidney disease is deadly, yes — but also treatable and preventable."
At our official side event alongside the The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the World Diabetes Foundation, ISN President Marcello Tonelli highlighted how gestational diabetes can be an important touchpoint for identifying kidney disease and other cardio-reno-metabolic risks earlier, creating opportunities for timely intervention and better outcomes.

A powerful reminder of the value of integrated, person-centred care across the life course. Thank you to all partners and participants for helping advance this important conversation at .

To***co affects more than lung and heart health.
This World No To***co Day, it is also important to recognise the link between to***co use and diabetes risk and complications.

Evidence shows that:
➡️ People who smoke are 30–40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-smokers.
➡️ Smoking can increase HbA1c levels, affecting glucose management over time.
➡️ Ni****ne can interfere with insulin action, causing insulin resistance.
➡️ Smoking is associated with inflammation and abdominal fat- both important risk factors for type 2 diabetes

As newer ni****ne products continue to be marketed to younger populations, the conversation cannot focus only on addiction. It must also consider the long-term impact on chronic conditions such as diabetes.

This matters even more as type 2 diabetes increasingly affects younger populations, reinforcing the need to address risk factors early and protect future health.
