Twenty years ago, IUCN pioneered the concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), defining them as "‘actions to protect, sustainably use, manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems, which address societal challenges, effectively and adaptively - while providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits".

Since then, IUCN has continued to lead the global NbS agenda by developing the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions™, a rigorous framework for designing, implementing, and evaluating NbS.

To meet the growing demand for Nature-based Solutions, IUCN established regional NbS Hubs - including the IUCN European Nature-based Solutions Hub in Bonn.

What’s next for IUCN’s Nature-based Solutions team, and how will this global vision translate into action in Europe?

Explore these questions in an interview with Charles Karangwa, Global Head of the Nature-based Solutions Centre at IUCN.

Where is the most biodiverse ecosystem on the planet? Right under your feet - and barely protected at all. The soil.

But there is good news. Earlier this year, the European Parliament made history approving the first-ever Soil Monitoring Law, aiming to achieve healthy soils across Europe by 2050.

On , we’re highlighting latest research into soil biodiversity indicators. The SOILGUARD project - that IUCN is part of - discovered that just four biodiversity indicators can account for over 70% of the variation in soil biodiversity.

Soil indicators are closely linked to environmental conditions such as climate and land management, and to key soil processes that support human wellbeing. These indicators are flexible enough to work with different monitoring methods and levels of expertise – and have been validated not only in croplands but also in grasslands and forests.

Understanding soil indicators can help us track the conservation status of soil biodiversity and move towards truly sustainable agricultural systems.

A recent global assessment of freshwater animals on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ reveals that 24% of species - including fish, dragonflies, damselflies, crabs, crayfish and shrimp - are declining at alarming rates.

These findings highlight an urgent need to scale up conservation action, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

To spotlight the latest efforts and innovations in freshwater conservation, IUCN Save Our Species is hosting a dedicated webinar.
