🇪🇺🇺🇳 World Hepatitis Day 2026 | Europe has the knowledge. Now Europe must act.

Every day, thousands of people across Europe live with hepatitis B, C and D without knowing it. Too many are diagnosed only after irreversible liver damage or liver cancer has already developed.

This is unacceptable because today we have the tools to change the story.

💙 Hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination and controlled with effective treatment, while research is bringing us closer to a functional cure.

🧡 Hepatitis C is curable. We can become the first generation to eliminate it as a public health threat.

💜 Hepatitis D, the most severe form of viral hepatitis, now has treatment and hope for patients, but only if people are diagnosed in time.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a future that can still be protected.

Europe cannot achieve the goals of the European Cancer Plan, the future European Cardiovascular Health Plan, or the fight against chronic diseases without placing liver health at the centre of prevention.

✅ Invest in prevention.
✅ Expand testing.
✅ Ensure equitable access to treatment.
✅ Integrate hepatitis into cancer prevention strategies.
✅ Reach vulnerable and underserved communities.

Protecting liver health means protecting public health, reducing healthcare costs, preventing liver cancer, avoiding liver transplantation and saving hundreds of thousands of lives.

On World Hepatitis Day, ELPA calls on European institutions, national governments, healthcare professionals, patient organisations and every citizen to join one common mission:

Find the missing millions. Prevent liver cancer. Eliminate hepatitis.

Because Europe has the science.
Europe has the treatments.
Europe has the vaccines.

Now Europe needs the political will to finish the job.

2026 | Hepatitis D (Delta): The most severe form of viral hepatitis

D ( ) is the most aggressive form of viral hepatitis, yet it remains one of the most overlooked liver diseases in Europe.

Unlike any other hepatitis virus, Hepatitis D cannot exist without Hepatitis B. It infects only people living with Hepatitis B, making HBV vaccination one of the most powerful tools to prevent both infections.

People living with Hepatitis D face:
⚠️ Faster progression to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.
⚠️ A significantly higher risk of liver failure.
⚠️ One of the highest risks of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
⚠️ A greater likelihood of requiring liver transplantation.

The tragedy is that many people are never tested for Hepatitis D, even after being diagnosed with Hepatitis B. As a result, liver cancer is often detected too late, when treatment options are limited and transplantation may become the only life-saving option.

There is hope.

For the first time, specific treatment for Hepatitis D is available, and more innovative therapies are currently in development. Early diagnosis and access to treatment can slow disease progression, preserve liver function and reduce the risk of liver cancer.

Why Europe can eliminate Hepatitis D

Europe has a unique opportunity because:
💉 Hepatitis B vaccination prevents Hepatitis D.
🩸 Reliable testing is available.
💊 Effective treatment already exists, with more therapies on the horizon.
🏥 Strong healthcare systems can integrate HDV testing into routine Hepatitis B care.
🎯 Combined with the European Beating Cancer Plan, early detection, vaccination and access to treatment can dramatically reduce liver cancer caused by viral hepatitis.

No Hepatitis B = No Hepatitis D.

By investing in vaccination, screening, early diagnosis and equitable access to treatment, Europe can become the first region in the world to move towards eliminating Hepatitis D as a public health threat.

Alcohol and viral hepatitis are a dangerous combination.

Hepatitis B, C and D can silently damage the liver for years without symptoms. Alcohol accelerates liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and significantly increases the risk of liver cancer.

The good news is that liver disease can often be prevented.

Get tested.
✔ Get vaccinated against hepatitis B.
✔ Get treated for hepatitis B, C and D when indicated.
✔ Avoid alcohol if you have viral hepatitis or liver disease.
