🦩 The people of Albania are in the streets, and CAN Europe stands with them.

For days, thousands of citizens have gathered to defend the Vjosa Narta Protected Landscape, one of the last intact coastal wetlands in the entire Mediterranean. Flamingos, monk seals, loggerhead turtles: this place is irreplaceable, and people know it.

What is happening at Vjosa Narta goes beyond one wetland:
It is about the right of citizens to have a say in what happens to the nature around them.

CAN Europe is proud to stand alongside Albanian civil society in this fight.

47 civil society organisations have today called on Western Balkan governments to resist pressure from the United States and cancel plans to build new gas pipelines and power plants.

📢In a joint statement, we warn that far from merely replacing Russian gas, the plans would either massively increase the region’s gas consumption and its dependence on imported fossil fuels, or end up as stranded assets.

For several years, the United States has been pushing projects like the Greece to North Macedonia interconnector, liquid gas (LNG) terminals in Montenegro and Albania, and the southern gas interconnection between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

❗Compared to the EU, the Western Balkan countries have low or no gas dependence. In 2024, gas comprised 20% of available energy in the EU, while in the Western Balkan countries it was:

✅Serbia – 14%
✅North Macedonia – 12%
✅Bosnia and Herzegovina – 3%
✅Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo – not connected to international gas infrastructure.

We’re calling on Western Balkan governments to capitalise on this advantage instead of entrapping their countries in costly import dependence.
