To close the 4th IRF Europe & Central Asia Regional Congress in Tbilisi, our Secretary General Thierry Goger took part in the Executive Session "People, Skills and Institutions for the Next Generation of Roads" 🙏

Alongside Magid Elabyad (IRF Global), Dr. Hristo Grozdanov (University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy Sofia) and Marko Orešković (University of Belgrade), the discussion showed that resilient, smart and safe roads depend as much on people and organisations as on technology.

Upskilling and reskilling the transport workforce for the digital and green transition is exactly what the Reskilling Project, in which FEHRL is a partner, is working on 💡

Our Secretary General Thierry Goger moderated and spoke at Technical Session TS4 "Decarbonization & Sustainable Mobility Pathways", which explored decarbonization, climate resilience, sustainable transport and biodiversity.

FEHRL presented the project, showing why infrastructure and biodiversity objectives need to be addressed together through a more integrated and systemic approach 🌱

This morning at , our Secretary General Thierry Goger moderated the Executive Session "Resilient Roads: Climate Risk, Emissions and Long‑Term Performance" 🌍

Research and industry experts discussed how decisions made at design and build stage, from low‑carbon materials to circular approaches and climate adaptation, shape road performance for decades.

These questions are also at the core of European projects FEHRL is involved in: CIRCUIT, on circular and resilient transport infrastructure, and SYMBIOSIS, on integrating biodiversity into infrastructure planning and maintenance.

The deadline for the Young Researchers Seminar 2027 (YRS 2027) calls is this Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

YRS 2027 will take place in Riga, Latvia, from 2 to 4 June 2027, as an in person event. Jointly organised by ECTRI, Eurnex E.V., FEHRL, FERSI Road Safety Research and HUMANIST-VCE, the seminar gives young researchers in transport the opportunity to present their work, receive feedback from experienced tutors and build their European network.

🌿 From research to action: this afternoon at , the EU-Rail project brought participants together for a workshop on Corporate Sustainability Reporting and biodiversity.

Led by Lazaros Georgiadis and the SYMBIOSIS project team, the session explored how biodiversity can be better integrated into sustainability reporting, drawing on the project’s research, literature review and stakeholder questionnaire.

The discussion focused on four key challenges:
🔹 Policy alignment
🔹 Measurement and data standardisation
🔹 Risk management
🔹 Communication and collaboration

The second part of the workshop moved into hands-on group work, with participants working in four teams to identify and score practical biodiversity KPIs for corporate and national sustainability reporting, including their alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

A valuable step towards turning biodiversity ambitions into measurable and actionable reporting practices. 🌍

🌿 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞'𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬

This morning at the IENE Conference 2026 in Bristol, the EU-Rail project held its workshop "From Grey to Blue and Green Infrastructure: Upscaling Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in Railway Networks".

Led by Luis Manuel Fernández Porras (MINUARTIA), the session presented a catalogue of nature-based solutions suited to railway rights-of-way, built on the project's assessment of how ecological assets are designed and managed across European railways.

After a series of case study presentations, participants took part in a facilitated discussion on the feasibility, costs and benefits of each solution. A key question ran through the debate: how can blue and green infrastructure make railways more resilient to flooding and extreme heat, while also enhancing biodiversity?

The insights gathered today will feed into future decision-making guidelines for infrastructure managers. 🚆

🌿 Integrating biodiversity into climate-resilient infrastructure

Today at the Conference in Bristol, the EU-funded project brought together researchers, infrastructure practitioners and biodiversity experts for an interactive workshop exploring how biodiversity can be better integrated into climate-resilient transport infrastructure.

Chaired by Gemma Cowan (International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI)) the workshop shared emerging insights across three key areas:
🔹 selecting the right nature-based interventions
🔹 measuring and integrating biodiversity data
🔹 embedding biodiversity into governance and decision-making

Through short presentations and hands-on group exercises, participants had the opportunity to discuss the challenges, explore practical approaches and contribute to shaping the tools and recommendations being developed by the SYMBIOSIS project.

A great opportunity to connect biodiversity and infrastructure perspectives and move towards more resilient and nature-positive transport systems.
