This week, EuroGeographics was pleased to welcome data quality experts from cadastral and mapping agencies across Europe to Rīga for the Quality Knowledge Exchange Network (QKEN) Spring Plenary Meeting, co-organised by Valsts Zemes Dienests and the Latvian Geospatial Information Agency.

Over the course of the workshop, participants are exchanging experiences and exploring key challenges shaping the future of geospatial data quality, including:

- Data quality detection and improvement processes
- The use of AI to support quality management and innovation
- Balancing open data ambitions with data security requirements

Collaboration and knowledge sharing between Europe’s national mapping, cadastral and land registration authorities remain essential to ensuring reliable, trusted and high-quality geospatial information for citizens, governments and businesses alike. The meeting provided a valuable platform for sharing best practices and innovative approaches, further strengthening cooperation to advance high-quality geospatial data across Europe.

During the plenary, four QKEN members were awarded the Quality Practitioner Certification, reflecting both individual excellence and the continued commitment of the QKEN community to high-quality geospatial data. Congratulations to Joren Van Gysegem, Ioannis Kavadas, Raitis Boļšakovs and Torsten Svärd.

A sincere thank you to our hosts and partners, Valsts Zemes Dienests and the Latvian Geospatial Information Agency, for organising this valuable event in Rīga.

📣 Development underway on EuroCoreReferenceMap – a new dataset to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty ⬇️

National mapping authorities from France, Germany and the Netherlands, together with their membership association, EuroGeographics, today announced that development is underway on EuroCoreReferenceMap, a new pan‑European dataset.

EuroCoreReferenceMap will be the only high‑value, large‑scale geospatial dataset created specifically for EU policymakers by national mapping organisations using their authoritative national data. It will cover all EU Member States and Switzerland, with the ambition to incorporate data from official sources across geographical Europe.

Developed through a unique production process underpinned by national expertise, the dataset integrates core geospatial information to deliver three EU priority themes: Administrative boundaries, Transport networks, and Hydrography. The project builds on the success of the Open Maps For Europe 2 (OME2) project and runs until the end of 2028.

The EuroCoreReferenceMap Consortium – IGN (Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière), Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie (BKG), Het Kadaster and EuroGeographics – have committed significant investment to its development and are pictured here at the signing of the EuroCoreRerefenceMap Consortium Agreement. They have the backing of EuroGeographics members – Europe's National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities – who endorsed the three‑year initiative at the Association’s 2025 General Assembly.

Last week, EuroGeographics was pleased to contribute to the Joint Workshop on Sustainable Business Models for National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies, jointly organised with EuroSDR, and hosted by Institut géographique national - Nationaal Geografisch Instituut in Brussels.

The event brought together representatives from Europe’s National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities, academic experts, and policy stakeholders to examine current challenges and opportunities in developing sustainable business models for authoritative geospatial data provision.

Oliwia Marszałek, Membership and Data officer at EuroGeographics, delivered a presentation on the OME2 project, outlining its aims and EuroGeographics’ work to strengthen the availability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability of interoperable, harmonised pan-European data. The presentation also highlighted how coordinated approaches and collaborative frameworks can support NMCAs in meeting user needs while maintaining high standards of quality and reliability.

We welcome the constructive discussions and the collective commitment demonstrated throughout the workshop. EuroGeographics remains dedicated to supporting its members through cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the development of shared solutions that reinforce the value of authoritative geospatial information for public administrations, the economy, and society.

📍 On the International Day of Clean Energy, reliable, authoritative geospatial data are not just support tools — they are essential enablers of the clean energy transition.

In Lithuania, the State Enterprise Centre of Registers, Registrų centras, has extended its national geoinformation environment map (REGIA) with a new data layer that allows residents and businesses to assess the solar energy potential of building rooftops. By combining this with real property data, users can estimate annual solar output, evaluate suitable roof areas and panel needs, and make more informed investment decisions in solar power, a key component in broader renewable energy strategies.
