Providing so-called 'emergency authorisations' to keep toxic on the market is a recurrent practice from EU Member States.

Belgium recently provided a derogation to Spirotetramat, a pesticide for which there is strong scientific evidence of endocrine disruption.

According to PAN Europe and Nature & Progrès Belgique, these derogations are not in line with EU law.

During the European Week Against Cancer, the European Commission defended its Beating Cancer Plan, a strategy to tackle cancer from prevention to early detection. While the EU rightly focuses on tackling causes such as to***co and pollution, are not even mentioned in this plan.

However, an increasing number of scientific studies are pointing to the link between cancer and pesticides exposure. Moreover, at least 15 suspected carcinogenic pesticides are still approved in the EU.

📨 Today, the End Toxic Pesticide Trade Coalition sent letters to the environment ministers of Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Luxembourg, Sweden and Norway.

🌍 These governments have previously expressed support for ending the export of pesticides that are banned for use within the European Union due to risks to human health and the environment.

🇮🇪 As Ireland prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, we are calling on these countries to help maintain political momentum and urge the European Commission to:
✅ Publish the long-awaited impact assessment without further delay;
✅ Prioritise discussions on ending exports of EU-banned pesticides;
✅ Deliver the promised legislative proposal.

⚠️ The EU should not continue producing and exporting pesticides deemed too dangerous for use on its own fields.

🔄 This double standard harms people and ecosystems worldwide and allows residues of banned substances to return to Europe through imported food.

⏳ The time to act is now.

Pesticide sales in the EU rose by 8% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching 316.000 tonnes, according to the latest Eurostat data. The new data refute the Commission’s claim of a 61% reduction in pesticide use, a figure based on a flawed indicator.

The EU is far from the objective of gradually reducing farmers' dependency on . In addition, with its recent Food and Feed Omnibus proposal, the Commission seeks to prolong the presence of hazardous pesticides on the market.

The EU negotiations on the Omnibus proposal to weaken the regulation are being pushed through at speed, with little scrutiny, no democratic debate, and insufficient expert input.

A coalition of public health, environmental, and consumer organisations is sounding the alarm in an open letter to the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026.

Our warning comes ahead of tomorrow’s Antici Group meeting, where the Presidency’s proposal to grant unlimited national authorisations not only to pesticide active substances but also to pesticide products will be discussed.

We have urged the European Commission to fully incorporate the rulings from three recent EU Court cases led by PAN Europe. These judgments - on cypermethrin, dimoxystrobin, and co-formulants - reveal a troubling pattern: the Commission and Member States' tendency to allow toxic or extend approvals without sufficient information or long-term safety data.

On this World , we want to highlight that complying with the law is not an option, in a democratic space: protecting public health, water quality and the environment must take precedence over profit.

Environmental and health organisations in Spain have urged the government to urgently classify Parkinson's disease as an occupational illness for farmers exposed to .

They also called for epidemiological research into pesticide exposure and the development of the disease in Spain. The prevalence of Parkinson's disease has doubled worldwide in the last 25 years. France, Italy and Germany have already recognised it as an occupational disease for farmers.
