Five UN human rights experts have raised “substantive concerns” about the European Commission’s Food and Feed Safety Omnibus.

They warn that the proposed changes on and biocide rules would weaken protections for human health and the environment, and undermine fundamental human rights.

These include the rights to life, health, adequate food and a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. Farmers, agricultural workers, rural communities and children living in rural areas are among those most at risk, according to the experts.

Chemical agriculture is heading for collapse - pesticide omnibus makes it worse.

The Feed and Food Omnibus will not address the real problems faced by farmers and citizens; it will only loosen the pesticide law. The elephant in the room is the broken agricultural system. Farmers face pests that have become resistant to , and the chemical industry's only solution is to produce more pesticides. We need a new masterplan, a blueprint for a new model - an urgent change of direction to support farmers in adopting practices that help to preserve our soil, water, biodiversity and health.

The European Union has been at a standstill for over a year in its meetings to regulate . Only the endocrine disruptor buprofezin was finally banned in the latest SCOPAFF meeting at the end of September. Hazardous substances such as flutolanil, a PFAS pesticide which should have been banned a long time ago, remain approved.

The Member States have just set out their position on the Food and Feed Omnibus, in favour of continuing to use toxic and problematic pesticides. In a letter ahead of the pesticide meeting, PAN Europe highlighted its concerns over these setbacks.

A new study has detected the ultra-short trifluoroacetic acid in all 110 European participants’ blood samples tested.

With a median concentration of 21.22 ng/mL, the study reports among the highest TFA levels yet measured in humans. PAN Europe is calling for an immediate ban on PFAS pesticides that contribute to TFA pollution, alongside a swift adoption of the PFAS restriction to act on other TFA sources.

The science is clear, and the exposure is universal. Policymakers must ban PFAS pesticides now.

EU Member States back weakening of pesticide safety. Today, EU Member States endorsed the Irish Presidency’s compromise on the Food and Feed Safety Omnibus. They support the Commission’s plan to roll back safeguards that protect human health and the environment from .

By extending approval periods, broadening derogations and prolonging grace periods, Member States are paving the way for continued use of hazardous pesticides that should no longer be authorised.
