On 10 August, a new publication by John Ashworth, missionary and long-standing collaborator of Pax Christi International, was released, recounting his extensive experience in Sudan and South Sudan and his journey in the field of peacebuilding. 📖

"Journeying Towards Nonviolence: My Life in Sudan" is an autobiographical memoir that intertwines John’s personal story (during his years in Africa, he also served as an advisor to the Catholic bishops of South Sudan and to the South Sudan Council of Churches) with the story of local churches and communities.

The book has also received endorsements from several members of our Network. “The hope,” says Sister Elena Balatti, a Comboni missionary active in Sudan and South Sudan and a former Board Member of Pax Christi International, “is that this book will continue to draw stakeholders’ attention to the need for peace and stability in Sudan and South Sudan.” 🕊️

In a statement published in July, the Europe–Central Africa Network (EurAc), of which Pax Christi International is also a member, expressed serious concern over the rapid deterioration of civic and democratic space in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The network denounces growing repression of freedom of expression and of those who oppose the political regime and defend human rights, calling on the European Union and its Member States to take stronger action to denounce violations and support Congolese civil society.

In recent days, a petition launched through Avvenire has proposed nominating the children of Gaza as recipients of the next Nobel Peace Prize.

Speaking to the Italian Catholic newspaper, Don Tonio Dell’Olio, member of the Board of Pax Christi International and signatory of the proposal, also shared his thoughts on the initiative.

“All children of every war are innocent, and no child’s suffering is worth more than another’s,” Don Tonio told Avvenire. “Gaza, however, can become a symbolic recognition. Through the awarding of this prize, whose funds would be used first and foremost for food, care and education, we can imagine the Nobel being symbolically awarded to the innocent victims of every conflict, starting without hesitation with the Israeli children killed on 7 October.”

Since its launch in May 2026, the Laudato Si Movement’s “Europe Be Faithful for Our Common Home” campaign has made a significant impact and achieved widespread media coverage. From more than 140 organisations signing the appeal at its launch, including Pax Christi International, the coalition has grown to bring together over 170 Christian organisations across 20 EU countries, collectively representing more than 33 million people. 🌍

We are proud to be part of a united voice calling on European leaders to take concrete action for climate justice. The campaign has generated more than 100 articles and media reports across religious and mainstream media, alongside growing institutional recognition of the appeal. It has reached European decision-makers at a particularly strategic moment, both ahead of and at the beginning of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, including through meetings between European Church representatives and Taoiseach Micheál Martin. 🕊️

Looking ahead to COP31 and upcoming initiatives, Pax Christi International continues to support the campaign, working to further strengthen the alliance between Christian organisations and civil society to protect and care for Europe, particularly at a time when the continent is experiencing increasingly intense and frequent extreme climate events. 🌱

🌍 "I Vow for Peace": join our global photo campaign! 🕊️

As the Season of Creation approaches, Pax Christi International, together with Pax Christi Asia Pacific, is launching the “I Vow for Peace” photo campaign, inviting individuals, communities, organisations, faith groups, schools and peacebuilders around the world to share a message of peace and nonviolence. Take a photo holding a sign with “I Vow for Peace” or your own peace pledge, and help us create a global digital mosaic of voices committed to building a more just and peaceful world.

Among all the initiatives organised in recent weeks to commemorate Hiroshima and Nagasaki, some also had the opportunity to travel directly to the two cities. From 4 to 10 August, a delegation from Pax Christi Korea took part in the memorial ceremonies held in Japan, alongside activities dedicated to the value of peace. 🏮

During their visit, the delegates met many people and organisations working every day to promote a message of nonviolence around the world. The visit also gave them the opportunity to hear the stories of those who experienced the terrible events of the Second World War first-hand.

Inspired by the words of the Mayor of Nagasaki, the members of Pax Christi Korea returned home encouraged to continue remembering and bearing witness, working every day to build and preserve peace. 🕊️
