Latitude is very happy to announce the launch of L - Latitude Logbook, an independent journal published by Latitude Platform for Urban Research and Design.

The first issue of L, titled Visualizing Waste is hot off the press.
It presents the results of the collaboration between Latitude and the research center LoUIsE of the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre-Horta, ULB, for a project on the visualization of biowaste production and management in Brussels Capital Region. Through maps and visuals, it aims, in particular, to represent waste modeling highlighting the key role of spatial analysis.

Claim Industrial Surfaces
Act One: Asiat Depave
Green With Grey International Summer School

Apply by August 19!

Claim Industrial Surfaces, Act One: Asiat Depave is held at Asiat Site in Vilvoorde (Belgium) from 31 August – 08 September. It is the first act of the Green With Grey (GWG) project which envisions the industrial platforms of Flanders’s Nevelstad—or Nebular City—(Belgium) as progressively and surgically softened areas (Green) that concurrently function as source and place of production (Grey). As part of the “Proeftuinen Ontharding” (tests projects concerning desealing) launched by the Departement “Omgeving” of the Flamish Government, GWG obsessively seeks for strategies to de-seal the industrial sites of Flanders while increasing their productivity.
Tutoring includes the GWG team Latitude Platform, UCLouvain and KU Leuven, in collaboration with 51N4E, Plant en Houtgoed, and Onkruid. The Summer School is addressed to master and bachelor students, and young professionals and it is constellated by a number of activities that involve also local players such as municipalities, manufacturers and the general public. The Act One of Claim Industrial Surfaces coagulates onsite concrete actions and initiates the de-sealing pilot project. Participants will enact the production stages of desealing (demolishing, materials sorting, reuse/recycling) while also testing the socio-technical devices associated to each phase (labour and tools, processing, phases).

Candidates should apply by sending a PDF file-portfolio (two pages, A4 portrait, 7MB maximum size) at: [email protected]

Latitude (Andrea Aragone) is invited to present the research projects Ilot d’Eau and Ilot d’Eau Le Retour at the seminar “Engaging Communities in Research. Methodologies for Understanding Today Complex Urban Environments”. The objective of the seminar is to go through a variety of participatory approaches addressing the interaction between communities and the environment they live in. Presenting those most recent water-related research that required the direct involvement of inhabitants, Latitude will track down the evolution of the design strategies and tactics employed in order for them to be responsive towards the socio-ecological geographies investigated. The event will be held on Tuesday the 15th of January 2019 from 9:00 to 15:00 at the Faculté d’Architecture La Cambre-Horta (ULB).

On December the 12th 2018, Latitude (Andrea Aragone, Federico Gobbato) will intervene as keynote speakers at the Jakarta Architecture Triennale (JAT), hosted by the Indonesian Institute of Architects in Jakarta. Latitude will present the research project Floating Urbanism, a toolbox for living on water designed by carefully surveying, understanding, and redrawing six consolidated large-scale water-based settlements among the Amazon and Mekong Delta. By referring to those forms of urbanity, the research identifies new patterns and urban lay-outs which can cope with hydrologic and environmental change. An exploratory design based on the toolbox has been developed for a floating urbanism site in The Netherlands.

Latitude was invited to be part of the second edition of the Brussels Urban Landscape Biennale 2018 (BULB) that will open next Thursday, September 20, at BOZAR. This year, BULB reviews the increasingly worrying issue of flooding in urban areas due to climate change causes. Together with contributions by Bureau Bas Smets, Taktyk and JNC International, Latitude will display an ad hoc work titled ‘Every Space Counts’ based on previous academic research developed by its members with the Université libre de Bruxelles. Every space counts as every drop of water does. In that hypothesis, objects landing on the Brussels landscape will inhabit the urban elements like parasites. New, unprecedented socio-ecological coalitions of wet city elements will emerge in a collective move for water.

An article by Latitude (Andrea Bortolotti and Marco Ranzato) has been recently published in the Special Issue of RI-VISTA magazine (Firenze University Press) titled “Out of Waste Landscapes”. The contribution discusses the project developed by Latitude for a dumpsite rehabilitation in the Verona plain. The same project was presented at the event “International Workshop on Waste Architecture. Rehabilitation of landfills”.
