7seera و T9seera (𝘏𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘢 𝘸 𝘛𝘬𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘢) is a participatory audio project in which Moroccan multidisciplinary artist Nabila Halim uses music, cooking and conversation as frameworks for collective encounters of care.
For its first volume, a group of fifteen people discussed pieces of music together that resonated with the following phrase: “Anger, I flee from you, Anger, I dwell in you”. The recorded encounters were compiled into a sound archive, distributed in both digital form and through physical gatherings, assembled by Laure Merlo (collective Tuba) and built into an interactive platform by Laure Fesler.
What emerges is a collective playlist of words and songs, a field of relations and reverbations, mapping out a many-voiced narrative about anger - an emotion that is so politically laden and often heavily contained. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 - 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴!
A full month of literature, poetry, film, performance, music, photography, urbanism, and print — animated by the artistic creatives of one of the world’s most charged and uncontainable cities.

The core of Johannesburg is rhythm, mobility, self-determination: 𝘑𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵, 𝘑𝘰𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 - 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦, 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳, 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 (Maneo Refiloe Mohale). A city whose history is filled with conflict, carrying deep traces of post/apartheid. In Johannesburg, violence and the intensity of the public space go hand in hand with animated forms of togetherness that challenge power and refuse to be categorised. Artists operate in fluid collectives, a collaborative ethos that is deeply connected to the cultural and spiritual pulse of the city.

This multifaceted artistic vitality is programmed for an entire month, spread across Brussels’ cultural institutes. Moussem Cities Johannesburg will take place throughout February 2027: programme details this autumn.

A programme by Moussem in collaboration with , , .architecture, , , , , and others who will join us on the way. Supported by the Flemish Authority and the Flemish Community Commission.

10 years ago, the first edition of Moussem Cities invited Tunisian artists, thinkers and cultural operators to tell the story of Tunis through their work. A festival series was born: going from Tunis to Beirut, Casablanca, Algiers, Damascus, Dakar, Teheran, to Istanbul in 2025, Moussem Cities turns to a different metropolis in the SWANA region and broader African continent each edition, in an endeavour to channel their artistic vitality to Brussels.

Together with local artists, diasporic creatives, and various partner organisations in Brussel, the festival explores urbanity across geographies: a platform of recognition, exchange, and collision.

Swipe along for a trip down memory lane while we are in the midst of preparations for a new edition of Moussem Cities in 2027 – more info will follow very soon!

This work-in-progress is inspired by by matriphagy, the act of offspring consuming their mother: through fragments of choreography, projections, and soundscape, Yara Boustany holds Beirut as a city forever reshaping itself through cycles of violence, itself a mother whose essence gets absorbed and transformed in a dance of devouring and rebirth.

We want to thank Yara, Nancy, and everyone who witnessed the first unfoldings of mātri-phagía with us and shared their reflections during the collective conversation afterwards.

Hussein Shikha (°1995) works at the intersection of experimental film, animation, textile, and video game design to engage with layered symbologies that reflect his heritage and family history. Through repetition, variation, and subtly interconnected forms, his intricate pixel drawings unfold beautiful if manipulated personal recollections forged from his PlayStation Memory Card and situated experience. Rather than following a linear narrative, Shikha searches for meaning through heightened, dispersed associations that invite viewers into moments of reflection, recognition, and spiritual resonance. Pixelation becomes both a visual signifier and philosophical tool that fragments, encodes, and eludes clarity, also echoing traditions of concealment found in Islamic art. Shikha was born and raised in Iraq. He moved to Antwerp in 2009 where he is currently based.

During his residency at Moussem, Hussein will continue developing Legend of Sumeria, a project that explores how video games can function as a tool to archive and reinterpret visual cultures embedded in endangered iraqi heritage. Drawing from Mesopotamian mythology, Islamic visual cultures, and Marsh Arab weaving, the work translates textile motifs and symbols into a digital environment while engaging with the sociopolitical histories surrounding cultural heritage, memory, and representation, all the while challenging dominant orientalist portrayals of Arab, Islamic, and Middle Eastern cultures with video games.

mātri-phagía is a transformative rite that attempts to contain and assimilate the violence we are enduring in a visceral and embodied form. Impregnated with a turbulent reality, Yara Boustany uncovers beauty within the horrific, tracing enchanted maps that bridge the primal body with synthetic and digital realms.

Beirut — a city forever reshaping itself through cycles of turmoil — stands as a symbol of how societies wrestle with destruction and rebirth, a microcosm of a world at the brink of collapse, driven by wars, unchecked consumption, and exploitation.

Matriphagy, the act of offspring consuming their mother observed in certain spiders and insects, shows an extreme form of maternal care, where the mother willingly becomes nourishment for her young. Inspired by this phenomenon, the work explores the continuity of existence — an oscillation of ancestral experience from its quantum origins to the human form. Beirut becomes the mother, nurturing her progeny through cycles of devouring and renewal, her essence absorbed and transformed in a visceral, transformative dance.

Yara Boustany (b. 1990, she/her) is a Lebanese multidisciplinary artist, choreographer, performer, and artistic researcher born in Ghbeleh, Lebanon. Her work spans choreography, visual art, and performance, exploring sensorial stimuli that guide humans toward unexplored dimensions of existence—seeking states of enchantment and disturbance. Her creative process draws on imagination and improvisation, unlocking the infinite potential of the body and voice beyond conventional constraints. She is the founder and artistic director of Amalgam Studio Beirut, one of the few remaining independent performing arts spaces in the city, dedicated to alternative artistic practices and collective creation.

This residency marks the first collaborative research phase of Yara’s new piece, mātri-phagìa. It includes her initial artistic exploration with sound designer Jad Atoui, focusing on the development of the work’s sonic and performative language. The residency also constitutes the first encounter and collaborative research with one of the performers of the piece, Nancy Nasr El Deen, laying grounds for embodied exchange and the exploration of the choreography beyond Yara’s own body.
