📍On 28–29 September 2026, will bring “The next act for CCSIs: Driving sustainable practices for a competitive and resilient sector” to Brussels.

🧩 After three years of work, including sustainability funding tools, business model resources, capacity-building activities, and national piloting events, the conference will connect CreaSus results with sector needs, skills development, academic perspectives, and policy dialogue, creating a space to discuss how sustainability can become part of everyday cultural practice.

🏛️ The programme will culminate on 29 September in a dedicated Policy Roundtable at the European Parliament, hosted by MEP Marcos Ros Sempere, bringing the conversation closer to European policy debates on culture, sustainability, and resilience.

On the 23rd of September, Professor Pierre-Michel Menger (Collège de France, Chair of Sociology of Creative Work) will open the 2026 ENCATC Congress with his keynote "Researching Creative Work? Achievements and Challenges", tracing what decades of research have revealed about creative careers, reputation, flexibility, and labour-market uncertainty, and what still resists explanation.

Immediately after, a panel of scholars, policymakers, and cultural professionals will respond, bringing the perspective of those who work with these realities every day. Elena Borin as chair, and Ellen Loots, Fabrizio Montanari, Barbara Stacher and Rosada Zangri as panelists, ending with a Q&R moderated by Matina Magkou.

Through a plurality of viewpoints and critical reflections, the discussion will examine the societal relevance, the challenges, and the future trajectories of artists and cultural and creative professionals today. By placing academic analysis alongside policy experience and professional practice, the session asks not only what we know, but what that knowledge changes.

We are proud to announce the two finalists of the ENCATC Research Award, the only international award recognising excellence in cultural policy and cultural management research. Established in 2014, it honours outstanding doctoral research, evaluated by an international jury on quality of methodology, international dimension, relevance, impact, and originality.

Maria Antonietta Cipriano (Roma Tre University, Italy) for "Participatory Governance for the Sustainable Management of Cultural Heritage: Pathways to Social, Cultural, and Civic Value Creation", examining how collaboration between public institutions, cultural organisations, and local communities creates value in Rome's Celio district.

Maria Camila Montalvo-Senior (Universidad Nacional de Colombia) for "Making Hands with the Earth: Curatorial Proposals from Indigenous Material Practices for Inhabiting the Earth", exploring how Indigenous material practices in the Colombian Amazon generate ecological knowledge and governance models, and what they ask of cultural institutions.

Two very different geographies, one shared question: who gets to shape cultural life, and on what terms.

The winner will be revealed at the Award Ceremony on 24 September during the 2026 ENCATC Congress in Nice, and their thesis published in the Cultural Management and Cultural Policy Education Book Series by Routledge.

Who speaks for artists and creators, and how can the world's networks act together on their behalf?

As efforts intensify worldwide to improve the status and working conditions of artists and cultural professionals, one thing is clear: no single country, network, or region can address this challenge alone.

We are pleased to announce that the 2026 Global Conversation, hosted in Nice, France (23 to 25 September), will provide an international platform for dialogue on one of the most pressing issues facing the cultural sector today: the status and working conditions of artists and cultural creators.

Organised within the framework of ENCATC's Memorandum of Understanding with the Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE), this edition brings together leading experts and representatives of major cultural networks from the Americas, Africa, and Asia to exchange perspectives and advance the global conversation on cultural management and policy.

Taking place within the 2026 ENCATC Congress "Artists and Cultural & Creative Professionals at the Centre: Rethinking Work, Policy, and Cultural Ecosystems", the Global Conversation connects voices from across continents to explore how international cooperation can strengthen support for those at the heart of our cultural ecosystems.

What do we really know about the realities of creative work today?

As Europe and the international community intensify efforts to improve the status and working conditions of artists and cultural professionals, this question has never been more urgent.

We are delighted to announce that Pierre-Michel Menger, Professor at the Collège de France and holder of the Chair of Sociology of Creative Work, will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 ENCATC Congress in Nice, France (23 to 25 September).

One of the world’s leading scholars of artistic labour and cultural production, his work has shaped both academic and policy discussions internationally on creative careers, labour-market uncertainty, and the changing nature of work.

His keynote, “Researching Creative Work? Achievements and Challenges”, opens a three-day Congress under the theme “Artists and Cultural & Creative Professionals at the Centre: Rethinking Work, Policy, and Cultural Ecosystems”, bringing together researchers, educators, practitioners, artists, and policymakers to rethink how cultural work is understood, supported, and sustained.
