90 partners🗣️, 30 countries🌍 and 10 years of collaboration ahead 🤝: The Resilient Cultural Heritage Partnership (RCH) starts its journey!

Cultural heritage is facing multiple interconnected challenges, from climate change and environmental pressures to disasters, social change and the need for sustainable, long-term management. Building resilience is therefore essential to ensure that Europe’s heritage is protected, valued and revitalised for future generations.

This is why ENCATC is proud to be part of the European Partnership for Resilient Cultural Heritage 🏛️, which officially kicked off in Marseille last week, bringing together a wide range of organisations to strengthen European cooperation at the intersection of cultural heritage, climate change and resilience over the next decade.

As a partner, we will engage our network of educators and researchers in addressing these pressing challenges by providing capacity-building activities, fostering exchanges between our members and other partners working on cultural heritage and climate resilience, and supporting cooperation with organisations and countries beyond Europe.

We look forward to contributing to this ambitious European effort!

ENCATC CONGRESS 2026 ✨ | THANK YOU, NICE!

Three days. 300 participants from 35 countries. Hundreds of conversations, new ideas and connections, all centred around one shared question: how can we better support artists and cultural & creative professionals and build more sustainable cultural ecosystems?

The Congress created space for knowledge exchange, debate, and new perspectives, from 🗣️ Professor Pierre-Michel Menger’s keynote on creative work, which set the tone for the event, 🎤 to rich panel discussions led by Elena Borin, Sarah Garaccio and Jean-François TRUBERT and a Global Conversation chaired by Alan Salzenstein, bringing together perspectives from research, policy, and artistic practice, 📚 more than 150 presentations during our Education & Research Sessions, and more than 🎯 20 inspiring projects from across the world shared in our Project Showcase.

🌍 We explored global perspectives on the status of artists and creators, discussed the future of cultural policy and ENCATC’s strategy, and brought emerging researchers to the forefront through the Young & Emerging Researchers Forum.

🏆 At Villa Arson, we celebrated 7 laureates: María Camila Montalvo Senior PhD, Linda Idjéraoui, Mara Cerquetti, Ellen Loots, Marjelle Vermeulen, Rute Carmo Mendes, and Tzu-Jung Chen across the ENCATC Research Awards, recognising excellence in research and education.

🤝 And throughout it all: our community came together to question, exchange, connect and imagine what comes next.

What does it take to make Europe’s cultural sector greener 🌿? It takes more than ambition. It takes new knowledge, tested practices and research that can change how we teach, manage and shape culture.

📚The publication of “Green Music Festivals in Europe: Sustainability Strategies, Practices and Certification”, authored by Giada Calvano and published by Routledge Books as part of the ENCATC Advances in Cultural Management and Policy book series, is an important example of this journey.

The research, recognised with the 2025 ENCATC Research Award 🏆, brings new evidence and perspectives on how music festivals across Europe are responding to the sustainability transition, from organisational strategies and practices to the role of certification.

But its impact does not stop with festivals. By bringing innovative research into international circulation, ENCATC contributes to building the knowledge base that academics, educators, cultural managers and future professionals can draw upon. Research like this can inform new teaching, inspire the evolution of curricula and strengthen the capacity of the cultural sector to respond to the green transition.

This is how ENCATC connects research, education and practice: identifying emerging knowledge, recognising excellence, and ensuring that new ideas reach the people and institutions that can put them into action.

🌿The CreaSus Final Conference is coming closer!

On 28–29 September, Brussels will become a meeting point for cultural professionals, researchers, sector representatives and policymakers working towards a more sustainable, competitive and resilient cultural and creative sector 🎭 .

After three years of work, CreaSus - Sustainability Business Models for CCSIs is bringing its results, tools, business models, and lessons learned together and opening the conversation about what comes next. How can the cultural and creative sectors (CCIs) move from communicating the urgency of sustainability to actively driving the green transition🌳🏙️? This question was at the heart of the discussions at the Creative Skills Week 2026 in Brussels, where ENCATC joined peers from across Europe to explore how the sector can turn ambition into action.

Our Secretary General, GiannaLia Cogliandro-Beyens participated in the panel “From Narrative to Action: Enabling Sustainable Transformation”, hosted by GreenCCIrcle and the Green Skills Working Group of the Creative Pact for Skills.

Drawing on ENCATC’s Environmental Policy as a case study, she shared how ENCATC has progressively moved from environmental commitment to integrating sustainability into its governance 👤, everyday operations ✍ , events 📅, and organisational decision-making ✅ .

The takeaway is clear to us: start concretely, but think systemically. Sustainability often begins with small, practical actions like reducing unnecessary travel or using recycled materials. But these actions need to evolve into a comprehensive strategy that integrates sustainability into day-to-day decisions, measures it, learns from their experiences, and shares the learnings with others. This process isn't just a technical challenge; it requires skills and adapting our organisations' culture.

This is how we can move from good intentions to key drivers of a more sustainable and resilient cultural ecosystem.

Research on culture matters. Now is the time to not only claim it, but prove it.

Right now, behind closed doors in Brussels, the draft text for the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework is being debated and rewritten. The decisions taken this autumn will determine whether Europe invests in its cultural infrastructure or sidelines it.

Investing in research on culture is not a luxury. It is the foundation for smarter, more resilient European policies.

For over three decades, ENCATC has worked to ensure that the knowledge generated by our community reaches the people who make decisions. That is what a network is for. As a leading research network, we cannot afford to sit on the sidelines while the future of cultural research funding is decided.

So at the 34th ENCATC Congress in Nice, we are moving from discussion to direct action. We are launching a collective advocacy campaign to bring empirical evidence straight into the EU budget debate, showing policymakers exactly what European funding delivers: concrete data, robust policy recommendations, and tools to address complex societal and economic challenges.

On the 23rd of September, Professor Pierre-Michel Menger (Collège de France, Chair of Sociology of Creative Work) will open the 2026 ENCATC Congress with his keynote "Researching Creative Work? Achievements and Challenges", tracing what decades of research have revealed about creative careers, reputation, flexibility, and labour-market uncertainty, and what still resists explanation.

Immediately after, a panel of scholars, policymakers, and cultural professionals will respond, bringing the perspective of those who work with these realities every day. Elena Borin as chair, and Ellen Loots, Fabrizio Montanari, Barbara Stacher and Rosada Zangri as panelists, ending with a Q&R moderated by Matina Magkou.

Through a plurality of viewpoints and critical reflections, the discussion will examine the societal relevance, the challenges, and the future trajectories of artists and cultural and creative professionals today. By placing academic analysis alongside policy experience and professional practice, the session asks not only what we know, but what that knowledge changes.

We are proud to announce the two finalists of the ENCATC Research Award, the only international award recognising excellence in cultural policy and cultural management research. Established in 2014, it honours outstanding doctoral research, evaluated by an international jury on quality of methodology, international dimension, relevance, impact, and originality.

Maria Antonietta Cipriano (Roma Tre University, Italy) for "Participatory Governance for the Sustainable Management of Cultural Heritage: Pathways to Social, Cultural, and Civic Value Creation", examining how collaboration between public institutions, cultural organisations, and local communities creates value in Rome's Celio district.

Maria Camila Montalvo-Senior (Universidad Nacional de Colombia) for "Making Hands with the Earth: Curatorial Proposals from Indigenous Material Practices for Inhabiting the Earth", exploring how Indigenous material practices in the Colombian Amazon generate ecological knowledge and governance models, and what they ask of cultural institutions.

Two very different geographies, one shared question: who gets to shape cultural life, and on what terms.

The winner will be revealed at the Award Ceremony on 24 September during the 2026 ENCATC Congress in Nice, and their thesis published in the Cultural Management and Cultural Policy Education Book Series by Routledge.
