🌍🌾 Happy World Rural Development Day!

Yesterday, on 6 July, we celebrated World Rural Development Day – a reminder that rural areas are at the heart of Europe’s sustainable future.

At PREPARE, we work alongside rural communities across Europe to strengthen participation, resilience, innovation, and cooperation. From supporting local initiatives and empowering civil society to contributing to European rural policy discussions, we believe that vibrant rural communities are essential for a stronger and more inclusive Europe.

Finland offers an inspiring example of long-term rural thinking. With more than 95% of its land area classified as rural, the country has developed a Rural Policy Report that sets out a vision for rural Finland by 2040, including strategic objectives and practical recommendations to enhance the vitality, sustainability, and competitiveness of rural areas.

Let’s continue working together to ensure that rural areas remain places where people can live, work, innovate, and thrive.

🤝 Strengthening the Rural Voice in Europe

PREPARE was proud to take part in the ERP Follow-up Meeting – “Putting Rural Civil Society in Position”, held at Scotland House in Brussels. The event brought together representatives of EU institutions, policymakers, and rural civil society to discuss how to strengthen the role of rural communities in shaping Europe’s future.

PREPARE was represented by Miodrag Matavulj, Secretary General, and Goran Šoster, who actively contributed to the discussions on the future of the European Rural Parliament (ERP).

🔹 Goran Šoster presented the role of the European Rural Parliament as a unique civil society movement representing over 70 partner organisations across Europe and participated in the Steering Group discussion on the future direction of ERP.

🔹 Miodrag Matavulj moderated the working group on “New ERP Partners: Building alliances between ERP and other relevant actors,” exploring how stronger partnerships can reinforce the rural voice and improve cooperation with European institutions and key stakeholders. He also represented PREPARE in the final Steering Group panel discussing the next steps for the European Rural Parliament.

The meeting focused on translating the Declaration of Inverurie into concrete action, strengthening rural civil society, and ensuring that rural communities have a meaningful role in shaping future EU policies, including the post-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework, the Common Agricultural Policy, and Cohesion Policy.

Together, we continue working towards a stronger, more connected and better represented Rural Europe.

🌱🇪🇺 PREPARE at the RUSTIK & Granular - Giving Rural Actors Novel data and re-Useable tools Final Conference

The first day of the RUSTIK & GRANULAR Final Conference highlighted a key message for the future of rural Europe: there is no single “rural Europe.” Rural areas are diverse, complex, and constantly evolving. Understanding this diversity requires better evidence, innovative analytical approaches, and stronger collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and local communities.

Representing PREPARE at this important event were Goran Šoster, GRANULAR Project Coordinator, and Miodrag Matavulj, Secretary General of PREPARE, who participated in discussions on how research findings can help shape more effective and inclusive rural policies across Europe.

🗺️ The opening sessions focused on moving beyond traditional rural–urban classifications and developing new ways to understand the diversity and complexity of Europe’s rural territories.

💬 Key messages from the discussions included:

🔹 “Research and inputs from GRANULAR are very timely and welcome, as they coincide with the current European policy cycle.”
— Vasilis Margaras, European Parliamentary Research Service

🔹 “The rural happiness paradox shows that a rural wellbeing advantage appears in many comparisons, but it is not universal.”
— Gundi Knies, Thünen Institute

🔹 “Local context matters. In the Netherlands, housing policies should be seen as part of rural wellbeing.”
— Kimberly Wevers, P10 Netwerk

🔹 “The food paradox in Bulgaria is that access to local food is difficult for both tourists and local people. Developing solutions requires updated data, collaboration with local actors, and digital tools such as GIS.”
— Petya Slavova, Technical University of Sofia

🔹 “The multi-actor approach is important to contribute to innovation across Europe.”
— Carole Esclapez, European Commission, who also highlighted the challenges of replication and long-term sustainability of project results.

🌿 Throughout the day, participants explored how tools, data, and place-based approaches developed through the RUSTIK and GRANULAR projects can support better decision-making, stronger rural communities, and more effective policies.

🤝 A big thank you to all speakers, moderators, and participants for an inspiring day of learning, exchange, and cooperation.

Tomorrow, the conference will focus on turning evidence into action through rural proofing, community-led approaches, and practical solutions for rural transitions across Europe.
