LOVE THY HEROES Summary Post:
9–11 October, Espace Vanhomwegen, Saint-Gilles

Are you a hero? Someone who wears a mask and a cape? Or someone who walks into a room exactly as they are, without asking for permission first?

This weekend we open Love Thy Heroes: a 3-day exhibition with DJ sets, an open mic, sound bathing and poetry, celebrating heroism in whatever form it takes. Not the hero built on conquest, but the one built on presence.

Senou : artist duo making glass-and-pewter jewellery, collages and paintings
Le Nestour Estelle aka Estelle Le Nestour: mixed media exploring Carl Jung’s myth of the hero

THE WASH BUS
In Cape Town, homelessness rose sharply during the pandemic, and the 2018 droughts left many without water and sanitation. The WASH bus is a fully equipped mobile bathroom for people experiencing homelessness: a hot shower that restores dignity and confidence and prevents disease. It started in Claremont in 2022 and now also serves Muizenberg and Mitchells Plain, with Absolute Ablutions, Baz-Art, U-Turn and our partner Viva con Agua South Africa.

➖️THE WASH PROJECT➖️

The WASH project provides fully equipped mobile bathrooms for those experiencing homelessness with the aim of restoring dignity and eradicating preventable diseases due to lack of hygiene.
The first WASH bus rolled out to the streets of the Claremont neighbourhood of Cape Town in 2022. Since then, it has expanded to two additional neighbourhoods in Muizenberg and Michelles Plain. Users report that the chance to take a hot shower not only helps restore confidence prior to job interviews, but equally provides some relief of the mental anguish that burdens people experiencing homelessness.
The proceeds of your contribution will help us keep this initiative running and as a result challenge punitive measures with community-oriented solutions that strive to proactively help people out of homelessness and bridge existing socio-economic barriers. We hope that the success of the WASH project will help reshape perceptions around homelessness and inspire new initiatives beyond Cape Town.

➖️ MUSICAL ARTISTS ➖️

Blue Era ( BlueEra ) invites you on an intimate performance guided by the convergence of people, feelings and time. His set promises an immersive experience where paths of raw, grounded drum machines intertwine with gentle vocal harmonies.

Purple Flame ( Tekla Tevdorashvili 🦚 ) is a feminist DJ, producer, activist and multimedia artist from Tbilisi, Georgia. She also writes poetry and explores the healing potential of audio frequencies. Using music as a platform for social change is her style, often incorporating activism into her sets and productions. This will be her debut to read live poetry and play an ambient set together. It is an invitation to slow down, reflect and rest.

&Ry ( &RY ) is a DJ, singer, event curator and founder of the music collective echte ra. Brussels born and brewed, the spirit of the city is infused in his music. His sets are versatile and surprising, elements of afro electronic, house and techno bring together deep melodies and groovy beats. He aims to build bridges between artists and dancers and create a journey where deep contemplative moments melt with bass.

Here are four visual artists for “Love Thy Heroes", our next 3-days-exhibition ❤️

▬▬ VISUAL ARTISTS ▬▬

Senou (Senou) is an artistic duo who make jewellery out of glass and pewter, collages and paintings. They love to experiment, mixing techniques and sources of inspiration. They adore art in all its forms, technique, unexpected results and, above all, things they would never have thought of trying. In short, Senou consists of two people, loads of materials, plenty of curiosity, a touch of the absurd and works created with two pairs of hands – sometimes fewer, sometimes more.

Estelle Le Nestour (Le Nestour Estelle) is a mixed-media artist and graphic designer. She creates imaginary spaces that mix poetry and pop culture. She draws inspiration from her travels, observing the histories and atmospheres of different places. Her visuals explore themes of suspension, symbolism and in-between spaces. For this exhibition, she explores Carl Jung’s myth of the hero, drawing on mythological and symbolic references, based on the idea that a hero is someone who has come to terms with their inner demons.

Lenka Strauss () is a visual artist working with oil paint on canvas and collage on paper, drawn to figures whose appearance seems to embody a distinct identity or role. Her work explores the desire to belong and find a role that fits, while questioning how identity and bodies are shaped by stereotypes, the male gaze and shifting ideas of beauty and gender. In Love Thy Heroes, Lenka cuts, paints over and reconstructs images of role models, turning admiration and identification into a process of dismantling, reshaping and reinventing the self.

▬▬ THEME ▬▬

Are you a hero? Someone who wears a mask and a cape? Or someone who simply stops hiding, who walks into a room as exactly who they are, without asking for permission first? Heroism has no fixed shape. It can be quiet, a presence that holds a room without needing to fill it. It can just as easily be loud, scattered, too much, too bright, everywhere at once. There is no script to follow, no rule to obey. Only an ideal to uphold and staying true to that.

Love Thy Heroes is an exhibition and a celebration of that heroism, in whatever form it takes. Not the hero built on conquest, but the one built on presence: soft or scattered, still or everywhere at once. To exist without apology, to claim a colour, a voice, a way of moving through the world, however many directions it moves in: this too is a form of heroism, one that asks for no applause and needs none. Here, every body writes its own myth, every desire its own legend, every excess its own kind of grace.

The exhibition brings together four visual artists, whose paintings and drawings give form to these other heroes: figures without capes, without conquests, without a single fixed silhouette. Antiheroes, ordinary bodies made legendary, tenderness and defiance held in the same hand, restraint and excess held in the other. Through their work, each artist asks the same question in a different language: what being a hero means? and who gets to decide?

Friday: 20:00-01:00, with DJ sets starting 21:00 until closing. Line-up to be announced.

Saturday: 13:00-22:00, with an open mic and acoustic music planned at 20:00-22:00
open for everyone.

Sunday: 13:00-18:00, with a soundbath and poetry readings.

Tickets: sold at the door, 5€ minimum donation, cash only event
