Gluon Gluon - platform for art, science and technology. A workplace for the future
(1)

Since its inception, GLUON, a Brussels-based non-profit organization has raised awareness of global challenges. A flourishing society builds on balanced interaction between humans, both their technological achievements and the natural environment upon which we depend. Interactions between experts from different disciplines & industries and artists are vital in a common search for solutions to the

often dangerous challenges that affect this vital feedback system. To this end, GLUON will develop a platform that maximizes collaborations, confrontations and collisions between artists, researchers, industrialists, young people and active citizens. GLUON aims to connect artists with researchers in universities, national and international research institutions and companies, at the same time as supporting residencies for scientists in artists’ studios. These interactions can lead to artistic and philosophical outcomes or innovative ideas, services and products in non-artistic sectors such as education, health care, ecology, cultural diplomacy and community building. GLUON seeks to form alliances with a growing number of partners such as cultural institutions & public museums, universities, research institutes, colleges, companies and secondary schools. The results of residences showcase and reinforce GLUON’s policy through an educational STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) program for young people in Brussels and abroad.

On June 5, join us for the opening of BLEACH, a solo exhibition by Belgian artist Matthijs De Block at Gluon Gallery.

Through six new works, BLEACH explores the fragile state of coral reefs and reimagines their vibrant colours through genetic manipulation, bringing them to life in synthetic organisms like bacteria. The exhibition pushes the boundaries between nature, technology, and bioethics, raising the question: How do natural ecosystems look like in a world shaped by increasing human intervention?

Before the opening, don’t miss a series of talks with Matthijs De Block, Marjan De Mey, Kristien Hens and Tom Peeters, experts in synthetic biology and bioethics, as they discuss how bio-art is reshaping our understanding of living systems.

📅 BLEACH Opening Night: Thursday, June 5 | 5–9 PM
🕑 Exhibition open every weekend until July 6 | 2–6 PM

🤖 Developments in A.I., machine learning & biotechnology are creating ever more intense relationships between humans and machines. These technologies shape how we live, work, learn, form relationships, and even make political decisions. While we train machines, they are also increasingly guiding us.

Ethical issues will be thoroughly explored, but without undue tech-bashing. The focus will be on both the challenges and the opportunities that technological progress brings.

Over the past three years, 15 European cultural institutions, together with 20 artists, have explored how these technologies shape our society. The New Metabolism symposium (April 23-24) will present their findings and tackle key topics like ethics, democracy, the robotization of the workplace, faith, creativity, power & the role of A.I. in human reproduction.

📍 Join us in Ghent (Zebrastraat) & Brussels (Tour à Plomb).

🔹 In Ghent, visit the exhibitions 'Intelligence, It’s Automatic' & 'Sensory Interfaces' by Peter de Cupere.
🔹 In Brussels, attend the opening of 'The Falling City' by Noemi Iglesias Barrios.

This project is part of the Creative EU project Digital Deal, led by Ars Electronica.
