CECOP CECOP is the European confederation of industrial and service cooperatives.

It is also the European region of CICOPA, the international organisation of industrial and service cooperatives. Most of the enterprises of the CECOP network are SMEs, while some are large enterprises. We also find several strong horizontal cooperative groups: in Italy, we can mention CCC-ACAM in the construction sector, CNS in the service sector, and CGM among social cooperatives; another example

is the well-known Mondragon group in the Basque country (intersectoral but mainly made up of industrial cooperatives), the 7th Spanish entrepreneurial group employing over 100 000 workers. Most of these enterprises are worker cooperatives and are characterised by the fact that the majority of their staff are members-owners. Around 9,000 of them (employing 270,000 workers) are specialised in the provision of social services or in the reintegration, through work, of disadvantaged and marginalised workers (disabled, long-term unemployed, ex-prisoners, addicts etc), and are generally called social cooperatives. A further 1,000 are second degree cooperatives for small enterprises (truck drivers, taxi drivers, mechanics, masons, etc), and are often called artisans’ cooperatives.

📍 We are in Iași, Romania, attending the 4th edition of the conference!

This morning’s session was dedicated to reflecting on the state of the social economy. Speakers representing this ecosystem, together with public authorities and financial institutions, recognised the achievements brought about by the EU Social Economy Action Plan and the 2023 Council recommendation on developing social economy framework conditions.

Among the ways forward, speakers emphasised the importance of:

🔹 Increasing the visibility and recognition of the social economy, including the experience of workers’ buyouts
🔹Building stronger bridges between the public and private sectors
🔹Ensuring access to complementary financial instruments
🔹Providing advisory support and investing in financial education
🔹Making public procurement socially responsible, moving beyond the lowest price criterion

We look forward to discovering social inclusion projects developed by local organisations throughout this meaningful day.

👏 In 2025 Poland marked 125 years of student cooperatives, a movement that has empowered generations of young people through cooperation, responsibility, and solidarity. The closing ceremony took place on 28 April in Wadowice, a region with the highest number of active student cooperatives in Poland.

What started in 1900 as a local educational initiative has grown into around 800 student cooperatives across the country, giving students hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, and community engagement.

Student cooperatives show that education goes beyond the classroom, preparing young people to actively shape a more inclusive and sustainable future.

At CECOP, we firmly support this vision. The future of the cooperative movement depends on the next generation, and student cooperatives are a powerful tool to nurture that future.

🤍 A new is out!

Meet El Arte del Buen Vivir, a testimony of how collective action can help alleviate physical and mental pain linked to the end of life period.

Through a holistic approach, founder Ysa Marín and co-founders Nagore Fuentes, Elvira Perez Vallejos, Marta Carús and Martina Caballero, among others, provide care to persons who have reached the end of their life journey as well as their loved ones.

The cooperative model appeared as the most suitable option for the members to let their specialisations, visions and sensitivity thrive. This allowed El Arte del Buen Vivir to create accompaniments curtailed to everyone’s specific needs.

🫂 As Europe’s population is aging fast, the topic of the end of life period must be fully embraced, not ignored. El Arte del Buen Vivir demonstrates once again the innovative potential of cooperatives, tailored to society’s needs.

📢 This May 1st, on , we want to highlight that working towards more inclusive, fair, and sustainable employment across Europe is possible – and cooperatives are showing the way.

Across Europe, over 43,000 cooperatives employ 1.3 million people, proving that a people-centred economy is both viable and scalable.

As the EU advances its Quality Jobs agenda, we call on policymakers to fully acknowledge the cooperative model through stronger support, recognising that, through democratic participation and worker ownership, cooperatives are key contributors to quality jobs, offering:

✔️ Fair wages and working conditions
✔️ Long-term job security
✔️ Inclusion of women and marginalised groups
✔️ Investment in skills and lifelong learning
✔️Human-centred management

In cooperatives, workers shape decisions, share responsibility, and ensure that economic sustainability goes hand in hand with social impact.

👉 Ahead of the upcoming Quality Jobs Act, CECOP reiterates that a quality job in cooperatives means workers having a real say in their working lives, ensuring transparency, fairness, human-centred solutions, and access to skills training. In the current EU debate on algorithmic management, worker-driven and human-centred management can make a decisive difference.
