🎓 Congratulations to the next generation of perioperative nursing researchers!

EORNA is delighted to congratulate six Bachelor of Nursing students from Artevelde University of Applied Sciences on completing an excellent research project examining the recognition of perioperative nurses across 13 European countries.

Working with the support of VVOV and EORNA, the students compared competencies and educational requirements and created an interactive website that makes it easy to compare perioperative nursing education across Europe.

Their work provides valuable insights for educators, professional associations and policymakers, helping to support greater harmonisation and recognition of the perioperative nursing profession.

Congratulations to the students and their supervisors on this outstanding achievement. We are proud to have supported this important project.

Perioperative Safety – Bringing It All Together

Over the past few weeks, we have shared a series of safety actions designed to support everyday practice in the operating theatre.

Each one has focused on strengthening:

Responsibility – through consistent use of safety protocols, checklists, and correct handling of surgical items
Teamwork – through clear communication, collaboration, and creating a culture where speaking up is safe

How can operating rooms reduce their environmental impact while maintaining safe patient care?

A new study published in Scientific Reports explores the environmental footprint of different methods used to manage intra-operative fluid waste.

Using a life cycle assessment approach, researchers compared a closed fluid waste management system with traditional surgical canister drainage. The findings add to the growing body of evidence around sustainable perioperative practices.

Evidence-based research plays an important role in helping healthcare teams and hospitals make informed decisions about patient care and environmental responsibility.
