🌿 Last week, the BeOH event ‘Ecosystems in the Balance – Supporting Future Policy and Research’ welcomed 126 experts from 12 countries and diverse disciplines, from research institutions and academia, but also private enterprises, NGOs and different government levels. They gathered to discuss pressing issues and challenges around , , , risks related to , and in the context of through excellent presentations, interactive workshops and a lively panel discussion.
The starting point was ecosystems, but the outcomes of the discussions have certainly provided useful inputs for researchers in public health and animal health too, as well as health professionals, policy makers and other stakeholders implementing a OneHealth approach.
This is fully in line with the basic requirements for OneHealth, which are capacity building, collaboration, coordination and communication ( ).
👏 With thanks to the Belgian Biodiversity Platform, Sciensano, Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment and Pasteur Network, all the speakers, moderators, note takers, and participants for their contributions and for making this event such a success!

🗓️Save the Date: Belgian IPBES Day
📰Two new IPBES assessments are launching
Belgian IPBES Day will be on 19 March 2025, in Brussels, Belgium.
In December 2024, two landmark new IPBES assessment reports will be considered for approval at the eleventh session of the IPBES Plenary in Windhoek, Namibia, which will include a Belgian delegation. These are the IPBES hashtag and hashtag assessment reports.
The Nexus assessment tackles the intertwined global crises of biodiversity, water, food, health and climate change, truly ambitious work to bridge single-issue siloes.
The Transformative Change assessment focuses on the underlying causes of the biodiversity crisis, the determinants of change and options for achieving a system-wide reorganisation for just and sustainable futures.
On 19 March, we plan to present these two assessments and discuss with researchers, policymakers and practitioners what these assessments mean in the Belgian context.
So mark your calendars now, and join us in March to talk all things IPBES, Nexus and Transformative Change!
The registration link and further information about the program will be available in January 2025.

The Belgian Biodiversity Platform provides services to the Belgian scientific community engaged in biodiversity research and to policy-makers as well as to practitioners. As a science-policy interface on biodiversity, our work is based around 3 main areas:
📷 KNOWLEDGE BROKERAGE
We make biodiversity research understandable, accessible and usable by policy-makers, practictioners and society. We thereby ensure that research is relevant for society.
📷 TOPICAL KNOWLEDGE INCUBATION
We offer scientists, policy-makers, practitioners and other stakeholders, the opportunity to incubate their knowledge with other experts on topical issues (e.g. invasive species, ecosystems and society, biodiversity and health, nature-based solutions, etc).
📷 OPEN ACCESS TO DATA
We provide services related to the mobilisation, publication, access and use of biodiversity data in an open and free manner.
