EAHP published its Position Paper on Artificial Intelligence (AI) highlighting the potential benefits of AI while multiple challenges and barriers must be addressed to ensure their effective use in healthcare systems 🤖🥼

In its position paper, EAHP:
- Urges the European Commission and national governments to ensure clear implementations of the legislative framework and to develop guidelines on the safe use of AI in healthcare systems
- Emphasises the need to maintain high level of data protection and ethical standards for the development of AI systems and ensure its compliance by all actors within the AI system lifecycle
- Recommends that the European Commission and Members States ensure access to investments in basic digital and physical infrastructure for healthcare institutions to enable the effective deployment of new AI systems
- Emphasises the need to involve hospital pharmacists early in the design, development, specification of parameters, and evaluation of information and communication technology within the medicine processes.
- Urges the Commission and education providers to make available additional resources and training opportunities to healthcare professionals and students that focus on boosting their AI skills and promoting AI literacy among patients and healthcare professionals

EAHP published its Position Paper on Single Unit Barcoding as a key way to reduce medication errors and contribute to safer and more efficient patient care 📑🏨

In its position paper, EAHP:
- Calls on national governments and hospital managements to enable the use of single unit barcoding within healthcare systems to increase patient safety
- Urges national governments and hospital administrations to establish funding programmes that support hospitals in updating their digital infrastructure
- Recommends that hospital managers advocate for the introduction of single unit barcoding within hospitals to support the comprehensive management of medicines information
- Recommends the involvement of healthcare professionals, including hospital pharmacists, in the implementation of barcode medication administration systems and to provide sufficient and appropriate training to end users.
- Strongly supports the wider implementation of single unit barcoding across additional settings, including home care, nursing homes and residential care facilities.

EAHP attended an event on the Biotech Act I at the European Parliament: "Manufacturing biologics in Europe: making the Biotech Act and European preference work"

The discussion revolved around shaping the Biotech Act I proposal to increase the development and access of biotechnologies in Europe.

EAHP emphasises the importance for health biotechnologies developed through under strategic projects effectively improve public health and translate into equitable patient access, notably through ensuring that:
- Strategic projects are fully integrated into healthcare systems, including hospital-level capacity
- Access to fundings is transparent and results are accessible to relevant stakeholders
- Incentives are well targeted and time-limited
- Hospital pharmacists and other healthcare professionals working in the ATMP delivery are involved
- Changes in the Clinical Trial Regulation maintain a high level of patient safety and ethics review
