๐Ÿ B-THENET's journey is reaching its final chapter

Over the past few years, B-THENET has been building something beekeeping in Europe didn't really have before: a proper network connecting beekeepers, advisers and researchers across 13 centres, all sharing what actually works on the ground.

From 27โ€“29 August, we're heading to Lukovica, Slovenia, for the project's closing event: the B-THENET European Beekeeping Event.

It's bringing together researchers, beekeepers, advisers and policymakers to talk through some of the sector's toughest current challenges: Tropilaelaps, invasive hornets, and practical solutions beekeepers can actually use.

There's also a policy dialogue on where European beekeeping goes from here, and we'll be bringing our own voice to that conversation too, talking about generational renewal, gender balance, invasive hornets roadmap and fake honey.

The good news: the network and its knowledge base remain open beyond this.

๐Ÿ POLLINATOR PERSONALITIES

The Independent Minds: Solitary Bees

No hive.
No queen.
No honey.

Yet solitary bees are among Europe's most important pollinators.
Each female builds her own nest, gathers pollen for her young and quietly helps flowers, fruit trees and wild plants thrive.
They may work aloneโ€ฆ but nature couldn't do without them. ๐ŸŒธ

๐Ÿ’ฌ Did you know that most bee species are actually solitary?

Nature is our common home. Its future depends on the choices we make today.

Across Europe, governments are finalising their National Restoration Plans.

These plans may sound technical, but they will influence something that matters to all of us: our health, our food, our landscapes and the future of biodiversity.

To help explain why they matter, BeeLife has published three articles built around three simple ideas:

๐ŸŒฑ We cannot restore nature while continuing to poison it with harmful pesticides.

๐Ÿ Nature restoration works best when all public policies support pollinators instead of working against them.

๐Ÿค Every one of us can contribute to protecting biodiversity through our choices and by supporting better policies.

Nature does not belong to us.

We belong to nature.

BeeLife is among 300 organisations that have signed a joint appeal examining the implications of the new EU Regulation on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs).

The document, addressed to the Slovak Government and relevant to all EU Member States, outlines legal, scientific and policy considerations following the adoption of Regulation (EU) 2026/1388.

Among the key issues raised are the possible implications for pollinators, biodiversity and the precautionary principle.

The EUBeeLovers campaign is BeeLife's commitment to giving European honey the visibility it deserves, a precious product that carries within it the work of beekeepers, the richness of local landscapes and the health of our ecosystems. ๐Ÿ

The website is also available in multiple languages, and this is just the beginning.

Over time, it will grow with new content: interviews, in-depth features and stories about the world of honey, developed by professionals in the sector with consumers in mind. The aim is to give everyone the tools and the narratives to truly appreciate the extraordinary diversity of European honeys and the landscapes that produce them.

๐ŸŒฟ Because this campaign, rooted in Belgium, speaks to something that concerns all of us: European citizens and inhabitants of the many and remarkable natural environments we share with our bees.

Did you join EU BeeLovers webinar?

We talked about agriculture, biodiversity, bees, beekeepers, and practical solutions for protecting bees, improving honey quality across Europe.

But these conversations shouldn't stop when the webinar ends.

That's why BeeLife created EU BeeLovers Campaign, a campaign that helps tell the story behind European honey and the people who make it possible.

The invasive hornets is spreading across Europe and putting increasing pressure on pollinators, beekeepers and ecosystems.
In a national survey in France, V. velutina was cited by 22% of beekeepers as the leading explanation for winter colony losses in 2023โ€“2024, the most frequently identified cause, with hive losses rising by as much as 30% where hornets are present in large numbers, according to field reports from beekeepers in France, Italy and Spain.

๐ƒ๐ข๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ?

๐Ÿ” Scientists have identified more than 1,400 species in its diet.
๐ŸŒผ Many of them are pollinators.
๐Ÿ Beekeepers in heavily affected regions report growing colony losses and increasing costs to protect their hives.

That's why BeeLife, together with Copa-cogeca, Apimondia Federation and EPBA, has published a new roadmap calling for better monitoring, stronger research and coordinated action across Europe.

Because protecting pollinators means addressing every threat they face.

The roadmap is a starting point, not an endpoint. The more organisations that co-sign it, the stronger the case for coordinated European action.

If your organisation works in environmental protection, agriculture, public health or food systems, we'd welcome your voice.
