🐝 BeeLife at Beecome 2026, the European Beekeeping Congress

From 1 to 4 October, the Agen Exhibition Centre hosts Beecome 2026: four days of talks, round tables and discussions between beekeepers, scientists, industry professionals and the public, under the theme ""Pollination, source of life"".

The programme covers bee health (Varroa, Aethina tumida, the Asian hornet), environmental quality and plant protection products, the beekeeping economy, apitherapy, beekeeping in Europe and the latest scientific discoveries. There will also be an exhibition with more than 150 exhibitors expected, a honey market and plenty of educational activities for young people.

BeeLife will be taking part with two contributions focusing on topics such as the Food & Feed Safety Omnibus and the CAP for pollinators, represented by two key voices:

Nearly 80% of wild flowering plants in temperate regions depend, at least in part, on animal pollination (IPBES). Protecting pollinators is a challenge for the whole of society.

POLLINATOR PERSONALITIES
The dinosaurs of pollination. 🪲

Before bees, there were beetles. 200 million years ago, they were already crawling across flowers, dusting themselves with pollen, keeping the ancient world in bloom. They are the original pollinators, and most of us walk past them without a second glance.

They love open flowers with easy access, wild meadows, old wood, the rich disorder of an unmanaged garden. They are less fond of monocultures, compacted soil, pesticides that linger in the ground long after the spray has dried.

Beetles are not just pollinators. They break down dead matter, recycle nutrients, and control pests.
BeeLife is part of Butterfly EU project and PollinERA: two EU-funded research projects working to understand the value of different pollinators and improve pesticide risk evaluation.

What will the next CAP mean for bees, farmers and agriculture? 🌱🐝

The Common Agricultural Policy can seem like a maze of regulations, interventions and funding schemes.

But behind this complexity are choices that can shape European landscapes, farming practices and the conditions in which pollinators and beekeeping can thrive.

BeeLife's new report asks a simple question:

Can the future CAP put Pollinator Stewardship at the heart of agricultural policy?

The report looks at the current CAP and the proposed post-2027 framework, identifying opportunities for:

🌱 more pollinator-friendly farming
🐝 stronger support for beekeeping
🌼 better access to food and habitats for pollinators
🌾 more resilient agricultural systems
📊 more effective use of public funding

It also provides an interactive tool to explore CAP interventions and understand where pollinator-friendly approaches can be integrated.

The future CAP will be shaped by policy-makers, national authorities, farmers, agricultural organisations and beekeepers.

🐝 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐬, 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞?

Every day, beekeepers and researchers collect valuable information about bees and pollinators. But when the same observation is recorded in different ways, connecting all this knowledge can be a real challenge.

That's why the Pollinator Ontology and the EU Pollinator Hub Controlled Vocabulary were developed: to create a shared language that allows pollinator data from different countries, systems and disciplines to work together.

And there's exciting news! 🎉
The scientific work behind this initiative has successfully completed peer review and has been accepted for publication in PLoS ONE.

It is an important step towards making pollinator knowledge more accessible, comparable and reusable, helping scientists, institutions, beekeepers and policymakers build a better understanding of what is happening to pollinators.
