Brussels International Women’s Film Festival 2026

Traces & horizons (Landeta, Amaral & Bemberg)
In early 20th-century Mexico, two sisters try to survive in a society where poverty and patriarchal norms determine their fate. When one of them is forced into prostitution, their paths diverge, revealing how this harsh society simultaneously condemns women and exploits their vulnerability. Pioneer Matilde Landeta delivers an intense melodrama, underpinned by a humanist perspective and a sharp critique of the power dynamics that shape women's lives.

🎞️ 10 Decades of Belgian Cinema – 90s > 2010s

In Iedereen Beroemd!

The Politisation of Black LGBTQIA+ Issues

Livingston's groundbreaking documentary portrays the ballroom culture of Black and Latino q***r and trans communities in 1980s New York. Exploring voguing, 'houses', and 'realness' as an art of survival against racism, homophobia, and transphobia. An intimate portrait of a subculture that was subsequently appropriated and recuperated by the mainstream.
Out Laws follows Namibian activist Friedel Dausab, who challenges the law against homosexuality. Together with activists from Sri Lanka and Barbados, the documentary exposes how the British colonial empire exported homophobia, laws that are still used politically today to suppress minorities.

Cinema in occupied Belgium
The first film, shot at the initiative of the German propaganda departement in occupied Belgium, was intended to prove that citizens of Flanders were related to the Germans. Die Grosse Liebe was a so-called Durchhaltefilm, in which German women were encouraged to persevere and support their husbands, even when they had to fight at the front for years. The Swedish actress Zarah Leander was very popular during the occupation thanks to the films in which she sang and danced.

Cinema in occupied Belgium
During the German occupation, Belgium’s film landscape changed dramatically. British and American films disappeared, cinema programmes came under strict control, and German, French and Italian productions took over the screens. Yet cinemas remained hugely popular, offering audiences a much-needed escape while also exposing them to a propaganda-driven view of current affairs.

To accompany his new book: "Bioscoop in bezet België: Film, publiek, propaganda en vermaak tijdens WO II", Professor Roel Vande Winkel (LUCA School of Arts / KU Leuven) has selected ten feature films from the archives of CINEMATEK. The programme deliberately consists of more than German propaganda films. It also features popular French and Italian films, each preceded by authentic newsreels and cultural shorts that recreate the cinema experience of the occupation. Before every screening there will be a short video introduction by Roel Vande Winkel, which will provide important historical context.
