🌍 Vers de nouvelles opportunités académiques pour l’Afrique centrale

Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que des travaux sont en cours autour d’une future collaboration entre la European University Association (EUA) et les pays de la zone (CEMAC).

Cette initiative vise à développer un mécanisme d’octroi de bourses d’études permettant aux étudiants de la zone CEMAC d’accéder à des universités européennes membres de l’EUA.

🎓 Objectifs de cette collaboration :
• Faciliter l’accès des étudiants d’Afrique centrale à l’enseignement supérieur européen
• Renforcer la coopération académique et scientifique entre les universités
• Encourager la mobilité étudiante et le partage des connaissances

Ce projet en préparation représente une opportunité stratégique pour soutenir les talents de la région et renforcer les passerelles entre l’Afrique centrale et l’Europe dans le domaine de l’enseignement supérieur.

EUA would like to thank Alexandr Hobza (from the Cabinet of European Commission Executive
Vice-President Stéphane Sejourné), for an open and fruitful exchange on Europe's competitiveness agenda.
Universities - and the knowledge sector in general - are key to making the Competitiveness Compass a success, for the benefit of the EU and its citizens.
For this to happen, we need a broad understanding of competitiveness and for long-term priority setting.
Read our proposal for a research, education and
innovation partnership for competitiveness, a dialogue between those that form the basis of Europe's knowledge and those that can create better framework conditions to develop and spread this knowledge base: a partnership for competitiveness built on co-creation and dialogue and with respect for the missions and goals of all.

It's the 2025 week! The largest community in Europe on quality assurance in higher education will gather at Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem on 12-14 November to discuss current developments in the sector and provide practical case examples.
This year's European Quality Assurance Forum, entitled 'QA in times of crises - Ensuring stability, autonomy and international cooperation in higher education', will combine sessions about European policies and trends, research, and practical case examples related to the Forum theme and more generally about current developments in quality assurance.

EQAF is co-organised by the European University Association, the European Students' Union - ESU, ENQA - European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education and EURASHE

For many students, coming home after a mobility programme abroad can bring unexpected problems when their courses and exams are not fully recognised by their university. Recognition is not only an administrative procedure, but a fundamental condition for fair, transparent, and meaningful student mobility.
The Report on the Current State of Automatic Credit Recognition, developed within the AUREA project, looks at why this still happens across Europe. Based on research and real student experiences, the report explains how credit recognition works today, where it breaks down, and why this matters for students' studies and future opportunities. The report was produced in cooperation with EUA, which is a project partner in the AUREA project.

The European Commission's proposal to introduce an Act addressing fragmentation in the European Research Area is a positive step that could strategically strengthen the European R&l landscape. However, it should avoid overly restrictive measures that could place additional burdens on researchers and lead to limit institutional autonomy.

EUA's input to the European Commission's public consultation on the ERA Act presents our considerations and specific recommendations on the ERA Act for each area of intervention identified by the Commission, including:

Underinvestment in R&l,
Alignment of R&l policies and priorities across
member states,
Freedom of scientific research,
Gender equality,
Research careers and mobility,
The free circulation of scientific knowledge, Knowledge valorisation, Al in research, and International cooperation and research

In looking to integrate Al responsibly, universities face practical and ethical questions, such as:
- How can they invest in technologies that improve everyday experiences of work and learning?
- How can they reconcile Al's climate impact with their ambitions to reach carbon neutrality?
- And how can they build digital literacy while cultivating a healthy awareness of risk?

As university leaders and communities tackle these complex questions, this report can serve as a starting point for reflection on small adjustments that can equip them to approach Al mindfully.

📘 The report looks at current and persisting questions in five key areas - Ethics, Strategies, Training, Regulation and Sustainability - considering if and how Al is changing perceptions and practices. Its findings distil the outcomes of a series of activities guided by a dedicated task-and-finish group comprised of representatives of EUA member universities from diverse academic disciplines.

Higher education and research are each critical components in current efforts to redesign global health, and in combination form a powerful mechanism to build and develop resilient partnerships.🌏

For Simon Overland, Professor at the Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care at Universitetet i Bergen and Director of the university's Centre for International Health, the link between education and research is indispensable to Africa-Europe cooperation on health.

📝 In this article, Simon highlights how research results need to feed back into the education systems to shape curricula and training programmes for the next generation of clinicians and global health professionals.

He also reflects on practical challenges of collaborative partnerships working over distances, and emphasises that policy makers need to keep in mind a theory of change where research and higher education remain intricately linked, mutually stabilizing and contributing to effective partnerships that can take on the major challenges ahead.

The Ukrainian higher education and research sector has shown remarkable resilience under extreme circumstances, not least thanks to the dedication of its staff.

For Ivanka Popovic, Vice-President of the European University Association and Chair of EUA's Ukraine Task Force, it is of paramount importance for the future of Ukraine that this invaluable resource - its people - is preserved and nurtured, including by increased European support.
