Research Project Focus #1: The Cultural Value of Ordinary Antiques

The MOOVA research project is structured around three distinct research perspectives, each exploring how value is created and understood in the world of antiques.

The first research perspective explores the cultural value of low-end antiques and how local antique dealers and related professions contribute to the practices of taking care of this “informal” heritage.

It looks at what gives these objects cultural value, the role of dealers in heritage management, and how the complex economy of antique restoration operates at the intersection of heritage and market.

✨ Meet the MOOVA - Making Old Objects Valuable Again Team!

We’re excited to introduce Anne-Sophie V.E. Radermecker, creator of the MOOVA project, European Research Council (ERC) grant holder, and Principal Investigator of the project!

Anne-Sophie is a cultural economist and associate professor at the ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles and also co-directs the research center GRESAC ULB.

With academic roots in both art history and cultural management, her research explores how cultural goods - particularly antiques and Old Master paintings -circulate and are valued in today’s art markets. She combines economic tools with cultural insight to rethink the role of “old” in contemporary society.

In addition to leading MOOVA, Anne-Sophie lectures at Erasmus University Rotterdam, is a fellow at Duke University, and is actively involved in national and European initiatives around provenance research, cultural policy, and the art market. She has published widely in interdisciplinary journals spanning art history, cultural economics, economic history, and management.

She also contributes to the BELSPO Brain-be 2.0 ProVenhance project at Fine Arts Belgium, and is a member of ACEI, TIAMSA, ENCATC, AIMAC, and ICOM. Anne-Sophie is part of the Collegium of the Royal Academy of Belgium, the Conseil Fédéral de la Politique Scientifique, and is an expert for the European Commission’s Cultural Heritage Expert Group focused on dialogue with the art market.

Meet Jin! ✨

Jin is a postdoctoral researcher on the MOOVA - Making Old Objects Valuable Again project, after completing her PhD in Economics at Beijing Normal University, with a joint exchange at the University of Leeds in the UK.

Her work explores how prices are formed in the online antiques market – and what drives people to invest in these cultural goods. With a background in economics, statistics, and finance, Jin uses large-scale data, econometric models, and machine learning to uncover patterns in market behaviour. Her goal? To better understand how value is created and perceived in the antique trade, especially at the more affordable end of the market.
