Today, May 28th, is the

Female Ge***al Mutilation is a violation of human rights that can lead to lifelong physical, psychological, and sexual health consequences for women and girls. Taking action for women’s health means defending their dignity, bodily autonomy, and right to accessible and equitable healthcare.

Today, we also highlight the work of our member organisation in France, Réparons l'excision, which provides specialised medical care, mental health support, and holistic services for women and girls affected by FGM.

Strengthening healthcare systems and supporting specialised professionals are essential steps towards ending FGM and ensuring that all women and girls are heard, respected, and safe.

This Mother’s Day, we honour the mothers who had the courage to break the cycle. 💜

Mothers like Ana, who made the brave decision to protect their daughters and future generations from female ge***al mutilation.
Ending FGM also means listening to survivors, amplifying their stories, and supporting the women leading change in their communities.

Read Ana’s testimony and other survivors’ stories in our global report “The Time Is Now: End Female Ge***al Mutilation/Cutting, An Urgent Need for Global Response”: https://www.endfgm.eu/resources/reports/fgmc-a-call-for-a-global-response-global-report-2025/

This post is part of our 2026 campaign, highlighting the role everyone can play in ending FGM and the need to turn care into action. Learn more about our campaign:

🇪🇺 On , we ask a simple question: does the EU truly care about ending female ge***al mutilation?

Through our advocacy work with the hashtag initiative, we connected with Members of the European Parliament who show their support by speaking out against FGM in political spaces, amplifying our messages on social media, and attending our events. But most importantly, they are proposing, drafting and voting laws that directly affect the lives of FGM ad GBV survivors and those at risk.

Everyone has an individual role to play in contributing to the elimination of FGM. But EU must act with determination through its institutions and be held accountable for its actions.

If the EU cares to end fgm, here is what it needs to do:
- Fully implement key legislation such as the Istanbul Convention and the Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence
- Support civil society organisations including the community-led, grassroots and co-create policies and practices that work
- Ensure that the next MFF 2028-2034 truly delivers for women’s rights, support for GBV Survivors and prevention of GBV within the EU and beyond, with adequate allocation of resources and earmarked funds
- Uphold human rights, operationalise intersectionality and effectively contain the devastating effects of the anti-rights movement

Europe was built not only as a political and economic project, but also on the promise of shared human rights and protection for everyone living within and beyond its borders.

✊ Today, we call on the EU to turn its commitments into action. Protecting women and girls requires political will, accountability, and concrete measures to end FGM once and for all.

We welcome the release of the first study on FGM prevalence in Luxembourg by UNICEF. Reliable data is essential for the development of adequate prioritisation of response. 🇱🇺

As the findings report, around 2,200 women and girls are affected, while an estimated 1,100 girls and adolescents are at risk. FGM is a form of gender based violence and as such does not exist in isolation. It must be addressed with concrete measures targeting structural issues, with a focus on prevention, and in line with the provisions of the EU Directive to combat violence against women broader and the Istanbul Convention.

🚫 Luxembourg’s 2025 bill to ban virginity tests and related practices already marked a remarkably positive development in this direction. But continued and coordinated development with rights-based responses is still needed with civil society actors, affected communities and experts across the board.

End FGM EU remains committed to supporting actors such as Luxembourg, other stakeholders in LU and across the EU in translating these findings into rights-based policies and full implementation of European and International legal frameworks.

We will also continue to engage with key citizen representatives within the initiative , such as Angel, Isabel Wiseler-Lima, Tilly Metz and look forward to increased cooperation with others, Charles Goerens.

End FGM EU joins more than 500 organisations from across Europe and beyond in calling on EU policymakers to strengthen the AgoraEU programme in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028 to 2034. 🇪🇺

AgoraEU brings together support for culture, media, and civil society under one framework, recognising their role in defending fundamental rights, democratic participation, and social cohesion. This also means supporting organisations working on gender equality and ending practices such as FGM, which rely on strong, sustained civil society action.

We join voices today to echo a clear message: AgoraEU must be adequately funded to match the scale of the challenges facing democracy in Europe.

The cl****is, responsible for sexual pleasure, is one of the least studied organs of the human body. 🇳🇱 A new European study in the Netherlands offers the first ever 3D mapping of cl****al nerves using high energy X rays, providing crucial insight for reconstructive surgery after female ge***al mutilation. This research challenges long held assumptions in medicine and highlights how limited our understanding of cl****al anatomy still is.

Today, 22% of women report reduced or****ic experience after surgical reconstruction. Better knowledge of how far the nerves extend could significantly improve outcomes for survivors.(source: https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1471-0528.14839)

Strikingly, a similar level of knowledge regarding the pe**le g***s was reached back in 1998, 28 years ago.

21 March marks the international day for the elimination of racial discrimination. Ending FGM requires more than laws. It requires confronting racial discrimination in all its forms, including the biases and structural inequalities that shape policies, services, and public narratives.

Too often, racialised communities are both stigmatised and underserved. This undermines prevention, protection, and support for those affected. Anti racism must be at the core of efforts to end FGM. Without it, systems meant to protect can instead exclude, misrepresent, or harm.

In Ireland’s first FGM trial, cultural bias and flawed interpretation contributed to a process where assumptions about an African family influenced the outcome: https://www.endfgm.eu/news-en-events/news/racial-bias-and-the-failure-of-irelands-first-fgm-trial/

Anti racism is not optional in the fight against FGM. Without it, systems meant to protect can instead harm. Explore our position paper on FGM, anti racism and intersectionality:https://www.endfgm.eu/content/documents/reports/FGM%20antiracism%20paper%20Web-version.pdf
