Established in 1983, ECF is today representing 38 countries, with over 500,000 active members, the voice of millions of cyclists. Our mission is to ensure that bicycle use achieves its fullest potential so as to bring about sustainable mobility and public well-being. ECF projects include annual Velo-city® conference, EuroVelo® long-distance cycle routes as well as the Cities for Cyclists network and the Scientists for Cycling network.

𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡: An EU-wide baseline of cycling data has just been established! 📊🎊

In 2025, ECF was a partner in Cycling Counts, a project on cycling data commissioned by the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) at the European Commission. The Commission published a validated report today, confirming for the first time ever a set of foundational statistics on cycling networks, usage, safety and services.

This will be instrumental for measuring progress in cycling policy and planning in the EU for years to come!

Some key figures:

🛣️974,320 km extended cycle network (but only ⅓ of this is dedicated cycling infrastructure, such as cycle tracks and lanes)

🗓️24% of the EU population cycles to and from places at least 1x a week

⚖️7.8% is the cycling modal share, and it’s higher among men (9.2%) than women (6.3%)

🚲71% of cities have a bike sharing system in place, accounting for more than 300,000 shared bikes

Many languages. Different countries. One shared passion for cycling. ❤️🚲

It’s 🌍and this year, we wanted to highlight how cycling can be meaningful in multiple ways. So we asked members and partners to share their answers to the question above.

From being a source of daily enjoyment, to evolving as a tangible hallmark of some cities, it’s evident that cycling is both deeply personal and central to urban life.

Our Policy and EU Affairs Director Fabian Küster attended the recently concluded World Urban Forum at Baku, Azerbaijan.

🗣️He participated as a speaker at a panel session titled “Why affordable housing needs fewer cars,” where he made a case for car parking as a driver of rising housing costs.

🚴🏙️Our latest CRC Member Spotlight is up! This month, we are heading to Switzerland to learn more about the Stadt Zürich's cycling journey and ambitions.

➡️Cycling is a strategic priority in Zurich, central to keeping the city liveable and moving toward climate neutrality. To advance its 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬, the city combines major infrastructure projects like the 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗱𝘁𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹, a cycling tunnel that has gained unexpected popularity since its opening in May 2025, with dozens of smaller, high‑impact interventions.

🗣️We spoke with Nicola Kugelmeier, Project Manager for Transportation Planning, and 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗯, Project Manager for Bicycle Promotion. They shared how the city is turning its strategic vision of “Safe and easy cycling for all” into reality with steady, incremental progress.

New publication: Quality Requirements for Cycling Infrastructure🚴‍♂️

As part of the UNECE Group of Experts on Cycling Infrastructure, ECF contributed to the development of the Guide for Designating Cycle Route Networks. A key component is now available as a standalone report.

From selecting to customising infrastructure, the guide considers a gamut of factors to create safe and frictionless experiences for all types of cyclists while ensuring harmony with pedestrians and motorised traffic.
