❗ Today, as the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum enters into force, workers, trade unions and civil society are mobilising in Paris.

Asylum workers from Fp Cgil Nazionale and CGT Ofpra have warned that the Pact risks normalising detention, weakening access to asylum and putting more people through accelerated procedures without the time, support or safeguards needed for a fair assessment. Read their piece here 👉 https://ilmanifesto.it/il-patto-dellue-su-migrazione-e-asilo-una-minaccia-ai-diritti-fondamentali-dei-rifugiati-e-la-normalizzazione-della-detenzione

Their message matters because it comes from workers who know asylum systems from the inside.

Public service workers are standing up for dignity, protection and fundamental rights. They are saying clearly: asylum services must protect people, not organise exclusion.

EPSU stands with workers and unions mobilising against policies based on suspicion, detention and repression. ✊

On 15 June, the European Parliament’s LIBE Committee is expected to vote on the proposed Return Regulation. Plenary may follow just two days later, on 17 June.

EPSU, ETUC, EFFAT European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions, IndustriAll Europe, ETF - European Transport Workers' Federation, EFBWW and UNI Europa have written to MEPs urging them to reject the proposal.

For workers, this matters. ICE-like raids in homes and workplaces would increase fear, racial profiling and exploitation. Migrant workers would be less able to report abuse, seek healthcare, take their children to school, or access the public services they need. Public services depend on trust - and there's no trust in this regulation.

MEPs must reject the Return Regulation and choose rights, safeguards, regularisation and properly staffed public administrations instead.

✊ Sending from public service workers across Europe to ver.di members in Bavaria, Hannover and across Germany taking action today to defend health and care services!

In Bavaria, ver.di is mobilising against plans that would deepen pressure on hospitals, care, social services and the workers who keep them running. In Hannover, workers from across Germany are protesting at the Health Ministers’ Conference against dangerous cuts to health and care funding.

This is the in action: no more austerity, no more cuts, no more pressure on workers and patients! Public services need investment, staff, fair pay and strong collective bargaining.

Wishing the new FNV leadership solidarity, luck and strength for the struggles ahead!

Important cardiac surgeries have been cancelled. No health worker ever wants this. But when life-saving care depends on your work, your voice must be heard.

📆 Upcoming event: launch of a Model Directive on Occupational Heat

Summer is on its way, but for many the season signifies dangerous working conditions more than sunny beach holidays

Sharply rising temperatures caused by put many workers at risk of every year, often leading to serious health consequences - from dehydration and exhaustion to heatstroke and even death

This increasingly unsustainable situation, no longer occasional but persistent across multiple regions of the European Union, has led many to question the efficacy of the current EU legal framework when it comes to protecting workers

This event will provide a discussion framework for why we need an EU directive on occupational heat, and what that directive could look like ⚖️

On the programme:

Dimitra Theodori, Head Health & Safety and Working Conditions Unit, ETUI
Andreas Flouris, Professor of Physiology, University of Thessaly
Marouane Laabbas el Guennouni, Researcher, ETUI
Bart Vanhercke, Director of the Research Department, ETUI
Maria Ohisalo, Member of the European Parliament, The Greens
Enrico Somaglia, General Secretary, EFFAT European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions

🚀 EPSU Organising Network launches!

Today, the EPSU Organising Team launched the first EPSU Organising Network, bringing together union organisers from across Europe.

Following two years of collaboration within an organising project, the network was created to have a dedicated space for organisers where they can exchange ideas, share experiences, and strengthen organising strategies together.

At the first online meeting, the EPSU Organising Team presented the work carried out over the past five years, including organiser training programmes, support for developing organising strategies, media and rebranding webinars, and seminars with affiliated unions. Participants also discussed how stronger cooperation and knowledge-sharing can help unions address common challenges and build stronger organisations.

Through regular online meetings and communication channels, organisers will continue learning from one another and strengthening union power across borders. If you are involved in organising within an EPSU-affiliated union and would like to join the network, get in touch!

✊ Together, we organise. Together, we grow. Together, we are stronger!

🚨Health workers know what the looks like: too few staff, rising workloads, low pay and services stretched too thin.

Now that warning is reaching decision-makers.

📰 Politico EU’s Morning Health Care newsletter has featured EPSU’s call for Europe to address the public services emergency.

But coverage is not the victory. Action is.

We need more staff, fair pay, better conditions and quality public healthcare - with trade unions at the table.

🚩 Solidarity with Portuguese workers after the powerful general strike on 3 June!

The strike brought together millions of workers across sectors and brought life in Portugal to a halt in defence of labour rights and public services.

Congratulations to CGTP IN and public service unions STAL, Sindicato dos Enfermeiros Portugueses, Sindicato dos Trabalhadores da Saúde, Solidariedade e Segurança Social and Federação Fnstfps!

EPSU stands firmly in solidarity with Portuguese workers following the powerful general strike on 3 June. As we said in our solidarity message, workers across Europe are facing similar attacks on public services and labour rights - it's a driven by years of neoliberal policies, austerity and underinvestment. And Portuguese unions show how to fight against it!

As CGTP IN stated, this was “one of the largest general strikes ever held in Portugal”.

Jorge Fael, from STAL (National Union of Local Administration Workers), rightly says:

“Today, Portuguese workers condemn and will continue to fight against the labor package that the right-wing government intends to impose on Portuguese workers.

It's a fight also being waged in many European countries, and beyond - against the neo-liberal policies carried out by governments.”

The labour package is now being discussed in Parliament. Unions warn it would expand precarious work, weaken protection against unfair dismissal, deregulate working time, and restrict trade union rights and the right to strike.

CGTP-IN stresses that this is not an endpoint, but the beginning of a new phase of struggle - calling for unity of all workers to defend wages, rights and dignity at work.

We will keep standing in with Portuguese workers in their fight against neoliberal attacks!
