"These trees are livelihood"

During a visit to the occupied West Bank, ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle met Ahmad, a Palestinian olive farmer outside Nablus.

Ahmad described repeated attacks by Israeli settlers, including the theft of his tractor and incidents of physical violence. Luc also heard reports from other farmers whose olive trees had been burned.

For many Palestinian communities, olive farming is a major source of employment and income. The destruction of trees and attacks on farmers have consequences for individual families and for local economies and communities.

Trade unions stand for the right of all workers to live and work in dignity, safety and peace, and in solidarity with those whose livelihoods are under threat. 🍉✊

On the final day of the ITUC solidarity mission to Palestine, General Secretary Luc Triangle visited Palestinian farmers near Nablus to mark the beginning of the olive harvest season.

Palestinian farmers and agricultural workers face increasing restrictions on access to their land, including checkpoints and other restrictions on freedom of movement, as well as land confiscation and settlement expansion, accompanied by violence and intimidation by Israeli settlers. These violations threaten their safety, jobs and livelihoods.

The ITUC delegation also visited an aluminium factory and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company, where a collective agreement was signed with the workers’ union.

To conclude the mission, Luc Triangle met with PGFTU leaders from the West Bank and Gaza. The situation in Gaza was discussed: widespread destruction, unemployment now exceeding 85%, and the destruction of transport infrastructure are having a devastating impact on workers. The alarming rise in child labour is another consequence of the humanitarian and economic crisis.

The ITUC reaffirmed its solidarity with Palestinian workers and the importance of a strong and united Palestinian trade union movement.

Today in Ramallah, ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle met with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and representatives of the Palestinian Authority to discuss the worsening economic and social situation, rising unemployment and the urgent need to defend Palestinian workers’ rights.

Thousands of Palestinian workers have been prevented from reaching their workplaces inside Israel for nearly three years, depriving them of vital income.
Increased international pressure is needed to end restrictions on workers’ freedom of movement, restore access to employment, ensure payment of outstanding wages and create new job opportunities.

The ITUC stressed the importance of strengthening workers’ rights, empowering women and investing in skills, technological development and employment opportunities for young Palestinians.

The ITUC reaffirmed its solidarity with its affiliate, the PGFTU, and with Palestinian workers, as well as its commitment to defending their rights and livelihoods, promoting decent work and supporting international efforts to improve their living and working conditions.

Workers and communities want stronger protections from corporate abuse✊️

Global unions are calling for renewed progress towards a binding UN treaty on business and human rights that puts workers' rights and human dignity before corporate interests.

Too often, companies can avoid responsibility when workers' rights are violated. A strong treaty would help ensure that workers and communities can seek justice, no matter where abuses take place.

"We welcome efforts to advance these negotiations, but the next draft must guarantee strong protections for workers and communities," said ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle.

Global unions are calling for a treaty that:
✅ Protects all internationally recognised human rights, including workers' rights
✅ Applies to all businesses
✅ Gives victims access to justice and remedy
✅ Requires companies to address human rights risks in their operations and supply chains
✅ Includes strong international oversight and enforcement

Workers' rights must come before corporate interests.

ITUC solidarity mission to Palestine continues in Jericho.

ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle and PGFTU General Secretary Shaher Saed met with Governor Hussein Hamayel, Mayor Salem Ghrouf and Palestinian agricultural workers to hear directly about the daily challenges they face.

Workers described exploitation in Israeli settlements, lengthy delays at checkpoints and restrictions on movement that affect their daily lives and ability to earn a living. They also reported the deliberate destruction of olive trees that are a source of income for farmers.

These restrictions undermine the fragile Palestinian economy, particularly in agriculture and tourism, two essential sources of employment and income.

The delegation also visited Al Nakheel date factory, which employs around 1,000 workers, 70% of them women, illustrating the importance of agriculture in sustaining jobs and livelihoods in the region.
