The Women Political Leaders (WPL) is the global network of female politicians. The mission of WPL is to increase both the number and the influence of women in political leadership positions. WPL strives in all its activities to demonstrate the impact of more women in political leadership, for the global better. To accelerate, women need three things: communication, connection, community. At WPL, optimising the power of communication and connection builds new communities of knowledge for women political leaders everywhere. WPL believes that progress happens by convening women political leaders who have the drive and the influence to create positive change. WPL members are women in political office – Ministers, Members of Parliaments, Mayors. Membership is free and members are honoured by their participation. WPL is an independent, international, post-partisan and not-for-profit foundation based in Reykjavik, Iceland (the world champion of gender equality). Silvana Koch-Mehrin is the Founder and President of the WPL Foundation.

Estonia has a new head of state 🇪🇪

Ülle Madise took the oath of office as President of the Republic of Estonia on 12 October. She is the second woman to hold the role, after Kersti Kaljulaid.

Before the presidency, she served as Chancellor of Justice for over ten years, safeguarding the constitution and the rights of people in Estonia.

WPL congratulates President Madise and wishes her every success in office 🤝

The supportive political spouse is a familiar image. Usually, she is a wife.

A satirical pamphlet reported to date from 1918 advised young women to look for a husband who would light the fire and clean the windows. More than a century later, support at home still shapes political careers.

🔧 Political offices are changing too, with childcare facilities, flexible working arrangements and proxy voting for parental absence.

The United Nations (UN) asks the world to advance equality between women and men. Its choice of leader should reflect that commitment.

What does the crisis of multilateralism mean for women on the ground? And how can the United Nations deliver real change?

At WPL’s Representation Matters convening during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly ( ), María Fernanda Espinosa (.ec ) highlighted: ▫️ national ownership ▫️ integrating global commitments into government priorities ▫️ giving communities the means and the knowledge to put decisions into practice

🟣 Women’s political representation is central to that conversation. Women need a voice and political power in the decisions that affect their lives, from global negotiations to local action.

A former President of the 73rd UN General Assembly and candidate for UN Secretary-General, Espinosa is seeking to become the first woman to lead the United Nations.

At the 81st United Nations General Assembly in , Women Political Leaders (WPL) convened a high-level discussion on « Representation Matters: Peace, Security and the Digital Compact ».

These decisions affect everyone, so everyone should be represented in making them. Women’s participation must mean real influence over the systems and technologies that shape a shared future 🌍

“Women are here to stay” 🔊

European Commission President message at the speaks to generations of women who fought to enter the rooms where decisions are made, and to those still working to be heard.

Today, women lead countries, shape policy and drive decisions at the highest levels of power. Their leadership is a powerful measure of progress.

But progress is not yet full equality. Women still face unequal access to political power, entrenched stereotypes and barriers to reaching, and remaining in, leadership ⚖️

This is why WPL’s Representation Matters work continues: to increase both the number and the influence of women in political leadership 🌍

WPL congratulates Board Member Helga Maria Schmid on receiving the 2026 Justitia Award from THE WOMEN IN LAW INITIATIVE 🏆

Helga accepted the award this week in Vienna, during the Women In Law conference, where she spoke about how networks such as WPL are essential to advancing women’s leadership.
