The Women Political Leaders (WPL) is the global network of female politicians. The mission of WPL is to increase both the number and the influence of women in political leadership positions. WPL strives in all its activities to demonstrate the impact of more women in political leadership, for the global better. To accelerate, women need three things: communication, connection, community. At WPL, o

ptimising the power of communication and connection builds new communities of knowledge for women political leaders everywhere. WPL believes that progress happens by convening women political leaders who have the drive and the influence to create positive change. WPL members are women in political office – Ministers, Members of Parliaments, Mayors. Membership is free and members are honoured by their participation. WPL is an independent, international, post-partisan and not-for-profit foundation based in Reykjavik, Iceland (the world champion of gender equality). When women reach the highest levels of political leadership, it is often presented as a sign of progress. But the circumstances in which they are asked to lead matter too.

🔎The “glass cliff” does not explain every appointment, nor does it call any leader’s competence into question. Instead, it invites us to ask: do women and men inherit the same chances of success when they reach the top?

Progress is not only about who gets to lead. It is also about the conditions they are given to succeed ⚖️

💭 Bias shapes perceptions, not the quality, competence or potential of women in leadership.

Recognising bias, questioning assumptions and making leadership opportunities more accessible can help build a future where every leader is assessed on their abilities, not their gender.

Progress means changing the odds, not proving the ability. That part was never in question.

Last month, the WPL Kenya Cohort was officially launched in Nairobi. 🇰🇪

In partnership with Kewopa Kenya, Women Political Leaders brought together women Members of Parliament from across political parties to strengthen collaboration and advance women’s political leadership.

The Cohort identified key priorities including women’s representation, economic empowerment and financial inclusion, alongside cross cutting areas such as women’s health and the responsible use of AI and emerging technologies.

These shared priorities will guide the Cohort’s work as members continue to learn, collaborate and strengthen the collective voice of women leaders across Kenya.

Women’s political candidacies often trigger a familiar question: « Is she the most qualified person for the role? »

🔍That question is fair. The real issue is whether « merit » means the same thing, at the same time, and to the same degree, for everyone.

Merit only means something when the standard stays the same for everyone ⚖️

Who gets elected matters. Who leads in moments of crisis matters. And the legacy women leave in public life can shape a country’s future for generations.

As Prime Minister of Moldova from 2021 to 2023, Natalia Gavrilița helped move the country closer to Europe, strengthen its resilience and protect its people through extraordinary challenges 🇲🇩🇪🇺

Earlier this year, she joined the WPL community for a candid conversation on defending democracy at Europe’s edge, and why women must be present in the rooms where decisions are made.

Applications are open 📢 for the 2026 Women in Cyber Awards, launched by the Global Cybersecurity Forum (GCF) Global Cybersecurity Forum with support from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ITU and UN Women UN Women

WPL holds a formal partnership with the ITU and has long collaborated with UN Women, both sharing a commitment to equality between women and men in leadership.

The awards recognise organisations that have strengthened women’s long-term success in cybersecurity through measurable, sustainable action, as part of the Women Empowerment in Cybersecurity (WEC) global initiative addressing the sector’s talent gap.

Meet the leadership guiding the launch of the WPL Kenya Cohort.

Women Political Leaders (WPL) is proud to announce the leaders who will help shape this important milestone for women’s political leadership in Kenya.

The Kenya Cohort will be co-chaired by Hon. Umulkher Harun Mohamed, Umulkheir Harun Mohamed , WPL Country Ambassador for Kenya, with the founding meeting facilitated by Neema Lugangira, Neema Lugangira , Strategic Advisor for Africa at Women Political Leaders.

Together, their leadership and expertise will help foster collaboration across political parties, strengthen women’s political leadership, and lay the foundation for a vibrant national network of women leaders.
