SoundImageCulture is a one year program in Brussels that accompanies filmmakers and artists in the development of their film project. At SIC, a group of coaches - renowned artists/filmmakers - and a group of peers will follow your project in a supportive and professional environment.
SIC has been thought by filmmakers for filmmakers and artists in order to help them break the solitude of the creation process.
It is a framework based on the idea of thinking by doing, on discussion around concrete audiovisual materials.

✦What we look for:
We are looking for film projects (short or long) that are singular, authentic and push the borders of audiovisual language.
Our aim is to support the participant to develop their artistic vision fully. We give priority to projects that already have visual materials, footage, sounds, photos.

✦What we offer:
Filmmakers, artists and thinkers brainstorm collectively on your project; Personal mentoring; Encounters with international guests allowing new viewpoints on your project; Masterclasses and seminars; Introductions to the local production facilities and infrastructures; A public presentation of your work at the end of the cycle. Collective sessions take place about every 2 months in Brussels, Belgium.
The spoken language is English.

Kings of the Sky by Deborah Stratman is screening today, Thursday 24 September, 19:00 at CINEMATEK, Brussels.

Synopsis
An experimental documentary about resistance, balance and fame, Kings of the Sky follows tightrope artist Adil Hoxur as he and his troupe tour China’s Taklamakan desert amongst the Uyghurs, a Turkic Muslim people seeking religious and political autonomy. The film gracefully hovers between travelogue, ethnographic visual poetry, and an advocacy video for preserving a traditional art form.

This project was shot over four months with Adil and his troupe as we toured Chinese Turkestan, performing nightly in tiny oasis villages. Adil descends from a long line of Dawaz (tightrope) performers, and is now teaching his daughters the craft. Since he first broke the Guinness World Record in 1997, Adil’s fame has eclipsed anything achieved by his forbears. He has become an inadvertent national icon for his people’s struggle, bearing uncanny resemblance to the Dawaz hero of an old Uyghur myth who once freed his countrymen from an oppressive reign of invading ghosts, an apt metaphor for the ongoing tension between the Uyghurs and the Han Chinese. By portraying the intimate details of everyday life amidst the Dawaz troupe, Kings of the Sky reveals to those unfamiliar with Uyghur culture the small truths which together form a sense of national and political identity. Kings of the Sky is a film about seeking balance: balance between minority separatist yearnings and Han Chinese rule… balance between ancient cultural traditions and modern technologies… balance between an American filmmaker and a remote Muslim community… and balance between our flightless bodies and the eternal laws of gravity.

Changes in Uber procedures, however, left the drivers frustrated and struggling. This innovative documentary probes the case of drivers in the Netherlands.

“Last Things” opens with a post-apocalyptic vision of Earth’s future: we are destined to die. Drawing on stories by J.-H. Rosny (the shared pseudonym of two Belgian writer brothers who were pioneers of modern science fiction), Deborah Stratman imagines a world where all life seems to have disappeared.
Then, suddenly, we realise that new forms of life are emerging from the mineral landscapes. Gradually, the film reveals itself as a surprising meditation on the evolution of life on our planet, through a collage combining archival footage, animation, microphotography, scientific imagery, and sequences shot specifically for the film.
Reflections by geologist Marcia Bjornerud punctuate the film, inviting us to rethink survival, extinction, and the Earth’s ability to remember beyond the limits of human history.
“Last Things” blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction, transporting us into a science-fiction film essay.

Long before humans existed there were rocks. And rocks will remain long after humans are gone. In this experimental collage film, filmmaker Deborah Stratman examines evolutionary processes from the perspective of Earth itself, inviting the viewer to see life through the “eyes” of minerals.
The beginning and the end of time merge in a nonlinear narrative, with the multi-vocal voiceover intertwining the writings of scientists, essayists and speculative fiction authors. Here, it is rocks that bring together past and future, fact and fiction, poetry and analysis.
At the heart of this speculative documentary is the idea that minerals preserve an archive of their many forms. It presents a vision of life in which humans are not the center; in which stones can remember and communicate, even worship. With images ranging from the microscopic to the majestic—from intimate close-ups to shots of immense caves and mountains—the film provides a mesmerizing audiovisual experience of the world of rocks and minerals.
