🎞️Last week we had the pleasure of inviting Eva Giolo for a Case Study with SIC participants.

Artist and filmmaker Eva Giolo discussed her practice and shared her creative process presenting her films Memory Is an Animal, It Barks with Many Mouths (2025) and The Demands of Ordinary Devotion (2022).

🎞️Memory Is an Animal, It Barks with Many Mouths (2025)
In Memory Is an Animal, It Barks with Many Mouths the resonances of place, magic and myth unfold through play. Attendant to the landscape through a child’s-eye, the film streams into the specific, hidden, and vast geologies of the Dolomite mountains, through the trills and murmurs of Ladin, the minority Rhaeto-Romance language spoken in the region. As the children narrate local folklore, this language and its oral traditions, passed from body to body, itself becomes corporeal and indivisible from the land. (Open City Documentary Film Festival)

🎞️The Demands of Ordinary Devotion (2022)
A film constructed based on a game of chance and a collection of encounters in workshops and homes in the city of Rome. Although the protagonists never appear together, they are inextricably bound by their actions — meaning is conveyed through movement and its associated sound, slowly forming a visual exploration of physicality. The Demands of Ordinary Devotion invites a reflection on the process of making, the prospect of motherhood, and uncertainties in creation, balance and composition.

About Eva Giolo
Eva Giolo is an audiovisual artist working in film, video, and installation. Her work places particular focus on the female experience, employing experimental and documentary strategies to explore themes of intimacy, permanence and memory, along with the analysis of language and semiotics.
Her films, installations and other projects have been widely exhibited at festivals, museums and galleries internationally, including Sadie Coles HQ, Harlan Levey Project, WIELS centre for Contemporary Art, MAXXI–National Museum of 21st Century Art, BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts, Palazzo Strozzi, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Media City Film Festival, Vision du Réel, among others.

About Ana Vaz
Born in 1986 in Brasília, Vaz’s work explores the relationship between humans, their environment, and collective memory. Her films, blending the political, ecological, and poetic, delve into the buried ghosts of her hometown, a symbol of both promise and fracture. A graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Le Fresnoy, she extends her work beyond cinema to include writing, installations, and pedagogy. Winner of the Kazuko Trust Award, she is currently developing Anhnanguera at the Villa Medici, a trans(e)historical fiction inspired by the colonization of Brazil’s Far West.

In This Together
The Netherlands, 2026, 59'

Synopsis
For the freelance drivers who seized the opportunities offered by the international company Uber, the prospects of independence and a good salary were irresistible. However, frustratingly, changes in Uber's pricing and revenue model made things increasingly difficult for them. An innovative documentary about freelance drivers.

"We're being attacked from two sides: by the customer and by Uber!" This desperate cry from an Amsterdam Uber driver perfectly captures the plight of his profession. In this compelling documentary essay, filmmaker Lisette Olsthoorn provides a detailed account of the exploitation of Uber drivers. What began as a promise of "unprecedentedly high profits" for freelance drivers ultimately became a nightmare due to problems with the app and market-driven fluctuations in the pricing and revenue model. She shows us archival footage of futile demonstrations and unsatisfying talk show interviews. This is more than a report; the film experiments with reenactments, conversations between the filmmaker, her subject, and the participating actors. Can we imagine fairer and more humane labor relations—and are they even realistic? Or is the current capitalist misery truly hopeless and unchangeable?

Keren is a performer, filmmaker, activist. At 20, she left Israel to grow as an artist and person. After eight years in Europe, she feels the need to return to the contradictions she left behind. She joins the rallies against Netanyahu, volunteers with Palestinian families, finds love, keeps filming. The October 7 attack occurs. The war and genocide begin. The fracture keeps deepening.

Fantasy and Non-Fiction 🔥🎞️

Masterclass by Courtney Stephens
Wednesday 25 February 2026
10:00—17:00
(Brussels)

How can non-fiction films account for the increasingly fantastical elements of present reality? How are genre conventions at play in, for example, the news we receive and the social media we ingest?

In a media landscape of slippery truths and authors, how can we go beyond the informational / educational model of documentary film, and enter into the collective dreamlife of the present? Filmmaker Courtney Stephens (Terra Femme, The American Sector, Invention, John Lilly and the Earth Coincidence Control Office) will share clips from her own and other films to think collectively about the instability of present visual and political reality, and how it might generate adaptive cinematic techniques, inviting other modes of displacement.

Experience is our guide, more than facts. Stephens will share footage and reflections from a work in progress, which deals with American fairy tales.
