Applications for registration are now open for the second annual Education & Outreach Autumn Lab, jointly organized by FIAF and the Deutsche Kinemathek. It will take place on 19 and 20 October, immediately before the next edition of the Deutsche Kinemathek's Film Restored festival.

On 11 and 12 June, the DFF - Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum hosted the CinEx Lab Frankfurt 2026 in collaboration with FIAF and the CinEx research project, bringing together professionals and scholars from Europe and beyond to discuss cinema exhibitions, including the little explored yet important topic of documenting and archiving exhibitions.

The two-day programme included a number of onsite lectures and talks as well as a hybrid session aimed specifically at the FIAF community, conducted as part of the series of Thursday Online Workshops with the participation of FIAF’s Cataloguing and Documentation Commission.

On this day in 1938, the representatives of four of the first film archives and cinémathèques signed the founding agreement of the International Federation of Film Archives at the Hôtel Matignon, the residence of the French Prime Minister, in Paris. 88 years later, FIAF brings together 187 film heritage institutions in 80 countries and on all continents. Happy birthday to FIAF!

FIAF Peer Learning Forum #1: "Strategies to cope with high temperature and humidity" – Registrations now open

Register now for FIAF’s first Peer Learning Forum, an online discussion series aiming to give archivists opportunities to exchange experiences with similar challenges, reflect on a specific topic, and expand FIAF’s pool of knowledgeable trainers.

Running from July to November 2026, this first FIAF Training & Outreach Peer Learning Forum will discuss strategies emerging from the working experiences of colleagues dealing with high temperature and humidity as the norm. The Forum will start as a reading assignment and online discussion, followed by two online experience-sharing sessions held in English and Spanish.

On 27 April 2026, Burkinabé film archivist and festival director Ardiouma Soma was presented with the 2026 FIAF Award by FIAF President Peter Bagrov at the Cinémathèque marocaine in Rabat, during the 2026 FIAF Congress. He is the first African to receive this prestigious accolade.

This award recognizes all that Mr. Soma has achieved during his long career to advance the field of film archiving in Burkina Faso (notably through his commitment to the Cinémathèque africaine de Ouagadougou), and more broadly the preservation and promotion of Africa’s rich film heritage (in particular as Artistic Director and then Director of FESPACO, the largest film festival on the African continent).
