A referral needs a receiving end.

When volunteering forms part of social prescribing, the practical arrangements matter: who receives the referral, what support is available for participation, and how the patient's progress is followed up.

These are among the questions being explored at the next Community of Practice session hosted by the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA).

On 12 November, Dr Ferdinando Petrazzuoli will draw on his experience in rural family medicine in Italy, including approaches to connecting patients with community activities.

Dr Petrazzuoli is President of the European Rural and Isolated Practitioners Association (EURIPA).

Professor Joyce Kenkre will bring further perspectives from social prescribing research and international practice.

The session is an opportunity for family doctors and colleagues in the voluntary and rehabilitation sectors to examine how these connections can be established and sustained.

The Social Prescribing and Civic Engagement (SPACE) project is funded by the European Union through Erasmus+ and brings together organisations in healthcare, rehabilitation and volunteering to strengthen social prescribing practice.

Family medicine is a bridge to equitable, comprehensive care for Indigenous peoples.

At the 63rd PAHO Directing Council, WONCA Iberoamericana-CIMF Regional President Dr Dora Patricia Bernal Ocampo set out four WONCA commitments: an intercultural approach, respect for territory, social justice and community participation. WONCA asked PAHO and Member States to protect primary care budgets and to train the health workforce in intercultural care.

Dr Bernal Ocampo spoke in Spanish. but only PAHO's English interpretation was available to share.

Family doctors are often the first point of contact for survivors of violence.

At the 63rd PAHO Directing Council, WONCA Member-at-Large and WHO Liaison Dr Kim Yu set out three actions for primary care:
1. Public awareness and prevention
2. Skills to recognise abuse and connect survivors with support
3. Stronger data and research

"Through strong primary care and coordinated action, we can build health systems that recognise violence earlier."

Everyone should be able to age and live with dignity.

At the 63rd PAHO Directing Council, WONCA North America Regional President Dr Tania Whitby-Best welcomed PAHO's guidance on strengthening long-term care. Family doctors and primary care teams help people keep their health, independence and quality of life through prevention, early diagnosis, ongoing management and coordination of services. WONCA called for sustainable and equitable investment in primary care and support for informal caregivers.

Antimicrobial stewardship starts in primary care.

At the 63rd PAHO Directing Council, WONCA Iberoamericana-CIMF Regional President Dr Dora Bernal welcomed PAHO's Plan of Action on Antimicrobial Resistance 2027-2031. Family doctors are often the first point of contact for people with infections. WONCA called for them to be meaningfully engaged in stewardship, surveillance, prevention and education, with better access to diagnostics in rural and underserved communities.

Dr Bernal spoke in Spanish but only the PAHO's English interpretation was available.

WONCA at in Manila 🇵🇭

WONCA is at the 77th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific in Manila, Philippines, this week (19 to 22 October). Representing WONCA are Dr Aileen Riel-Espina (WONCA APR President-elect) and Dr Leilanie Nicodemus (WONCA APR Executive Committee), and Dr Michael Angelo Arteza, Chair of the Rajakumar Movement, the young doctors’ movement of WONCA Asia Pacific.

WONCA is in official relations with the World Health Organization, which gives family doctors a voice in WHO’s governing bodies. That voice matters at regional level too. The Regional Committees are where ministers of health from each region agree the priorities that shape health services, including primary care, in their countries. This autumn WONCA has also taken part in WHO’s regional meetings for Africa, the Americas and the Eastern Mediterranean.

WONCA at the 73rd WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean

From 13 to 15 October, ministers of health and senior officials from across the Eastern Mediterranean met in Cairo for , and WONCA was there to bring the voice of family medicine.

WONCA East Mediterranean Regional President Prof Dr Faisal A. Alnaser and Prof Nagwa Nashat Hegazy (Egyptian Family Medicine Association), Chair of the WONCA Working Party on Education, delivered two WONCA interventions:

👩‍⚕️ Health workforce: Prof Alnaser warned that shortages of health professionals, driven by migration, poor retention and under-investment in primary health care, threaten universal health coverage. He proposed closer collaboration between WHO EMRO and WONCA East Mediterranean on training, professional development and retention.

🦠 Disease elimination: welcoming the draft resolution on a multi-communicable disease elimination approach, Prof Nashat Hegazy set out how family medicine turns integration into practice, linking vaccination, early diagnosis, treatment and surveillance with community engagement. "National progress must not conceal communities still unreached."

🤝 Around the sessions, they met WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO EMRO colleagues working on primary care, antimicrobial resistance, health professions education and rural health equity, ministers of health from across the Region, the Medical Women's International Association and IFMSA medical students.

Family medicine is the first level of response in a health crisis.

At the 63rd PAHO Directing Council, WONCA North America Regional President Dr Tania Whitby-Best urged Member States to bring family medicine into Emergency Operations Centres, fund primary care as a cornerstone of health security and protect frontline community-based health workers.

"Investing in family medicine is the most efficient strategy for saving lives."
