In his message for the June 2026 WONCA EMR Newsletter, President Prof. Faisal Alnasir reflects on the value of family medicine in an age of AI:

"Family medicine is not just another specialty. It is the foundation of all medicine upon which sustainable, equitable, and human healthcare is built. Here, the family physician knows the patient not as a diagnosis or a file number, but as a person, with a history, a family, a culture, and a story."

At the 79th World Health Assembly, WONCA and the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) convened an official WHO side event: Bridging Health and Peace, Accelerating the Global Health and Peace Initiative in Turbulent Times.

The discussion brought together WHO, Member States from Oman, Brazil, Spain and Slovenia, nursing, public health and academic voices around a shared idea. In fragile and conflict-affected settings, health systems can do more than respond to crisis. When built on equity, community trust and continuity of care, they help protect dignity, sustain dialogue and support social cohesion.

WONCA President Prof Viviana Martinez-Bianchi spoke to the role of family doctors and primary care teams, who often serve as trusted first points of contact for families facing displacement, fear and loss. Maintaining that care means protecting clinics, supporting health workers and listening to communities.

The shared call to action was clear: protect health workers and civilians, keep health services running in fragile settings, invest in inclusive primary health care, and build the evidence and political commitment to make health a bridge to peace.

Blood from voluntary, unpaid donors is the safest source for patients. One donation takes about an hour and can help save up to three lives.

On World Blood Donor Day, a reminder that family doctors are well-placed to recruit voluntary donors. We see healthy patients every day and hold the trust that turns a conversation into a lifelong commitment.

The WONCA Special Interest Group on Family Violence has been renamed the WONCA Special Interest Group on Prevention and Response to Abuse and Violence, WONCA SIGPRAV.

The updated name reflects the growing breadth of the group’s work in family medicine and primary care, including prevention, early identification, trauma-informed care, recovery, advocacy, research and professional support. It also recognises the many forms of abuse and violence that may present in primary care, including family and domestic violence, sexual and gender-based violence, child and abuse of elderly people, violence against LGBTQ+ people, and other forms of abuse and violence that may occur across the lifespan.

WONCA SIGPRAV brings together family doctors and primary health care professionals committed to safe, compassionate, culturally sensitive and evidence-based care for survivors of abuse and violence. The group will continue to share guidance, resources, training, research and practical experience, while supporting the health and resilience of the professionals who provide this care.

This renewed identity marks an important step for the group and its global community of members, with a wider scope, a clear purpose, and continued commitment to prevention, response, equity and human rights in primary health care.

WONCA is glad to be working with the World Patients Alliance on a webinar about an everyday patient safety question: how patients fast before an operation.

The discussion draws on the recent international consensus statement on peri-operative fasting, published in the journal Anaesthesia, and looks at how fasting practices are understood, communicated, and experienced by patients.

Organised by the World Patients Alliance with the European Patient Safety Foundation, the session brings clinical evidence, real-world practice, and patient experience together.

Prof. Maria Pilar Astier Peña, WONCA President Elect, will represent family doctors on the panel.

Wednesday, 9 July 2026, 15:00 to 16:30 CEST. Free and online.

World Organization of Family Doctors - WONCA WONCA Rural Working Party

05/06/2026

Today is World Environment Day.

To mark it, we are resharing a short video from Dr Enrique Falceto De Barros, a family doctor in rural southern Brazil and past chair of WONCA's Working Party on Planetary Health.

Family doctors sit close to people and communities, which puts them in a good position to connect human health with the health of the planet.

Giving the planet one minute is a small, everyday way to start.

Healthier people and a healthier planet go together. Primary care has a part to play in both.
