With support from the European Union in Rwanda funded Kungahara/PROFARM project implemented by EUCORD and Rural Development Initiative-RDI, the KOTURWI Cooperative in Ruhango District, more than doubled its maize productivity, from 1.5 to 3.5 tons per hectare.

However, higher production brings new post-harvest challenges. To protect the cooperative's hard work, the project built a 50-ton metallic maize dryer to reduce post-harvest losses, prevent aflatoxin contamination and boost farmers’ confidence when negotiating fair prices with buyers.

The project is contributing to higher yields, safe crops and improved livelihoods for Rwandan farmers.

The event brought together +100 participants, including representatives from the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, PepsiCo, local Agricultural Offices, and ETA. Key stakeholders such as the Development Bank of Ethiopia and Holeta Research Center also attended.

The Ezegezea Cooperative thanked EUCORD and ETA for their support in capacity building, access to improved inputs, on-field technical guidance, and market linkage with PepsiCo.

Advisor to State Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia, Professor Ali Mohammed and Head of Gurage Zone Administration Ato Leca, emphasized the importance of end-to-end value chain development, farmer production clusters and farming contract arrangements. The project, implemented by EUCORD and RDI under the Program funded by the EU Delegation in , installed solar-powered irrigation systems with six cooperatives in Burera, Gicumbi, and Ruhango districts.

The systems provide year-round irrigation, reducing reliance on erratic rainfall and supporting continuous production of high-value crops. Farmers were selected based on active engagement, strong cooperatives, and commitment to maintain the systems. The initiative is expected to improve food security and nutrition, increase incomes, and promote environmentally sound farming practices.

The selected cooperatives will serve to showcase the benefits of solar irrigation to neighboring cooperatives. Cooperatives will establish a revolving fund to maintain the systems and replace spare parts, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Thanks to a grant from the Achmea Foundation, EUCORD is implementing the "Mali Chili Pepper Project" in southern . Its goal is to increase the production of chili peppers by extending the production season through solar irrigation, to link cooperatives with buyers, and to improve farmers' incomes.

🧑‍🌾 Nurseries were established in July 2025 and the first harvests started in November.
🌞 Thanks to irrigation with solar pumps, the harvest and drying of peppers was extended from November 2025 to March 2026.
🌶️ Varieties used were open pollinated varieties Cayenne, Nafama and Bafarima rather than hybrids.
💰 In April 2026, five contracts were signed between cooperatives and wholesale traders in Sikasso, Bougouni and Yanfolila. In April, a total of 11.3 tons were sold for an amount of 21.7 million FCFA (~33,120 EUR).

Sales have only just started! In Yanfolila, harvesting and drying are continuing for plots that were transplanted in August and September 2025.
