The project, implemented by EUCORD and RDI under the Program funded by the EU Delegation in , installed solar-powered irrigation systems with six cooperatives in Burera, Gicumbi, and Ruhango districts.

The systems provide year-round irrigation, reducing reliance on erratic rainfall and supporting continuous production of high-value crops. Farmers were selected based on active engagement, strong cooperatives, and commitment to maintain the systems. The initiative is expected to improve food security and nutrition, increase incomes, and promote environmentally sound farming practices.

The selected cooperatives will serve to showcase the benefits of solar irrigation to neighboring cooperatives. Cooperatives will establish a revolving fund to maintain the systems and replace spare parts, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Thanks to a grant from the Achmea Foundation, EUCORD is implementing the "Mali Chili Pepper Project" in southern . Its goal is to increase the production of chili peppers by extending the production season through solar irrigation, to link cooperatives with buyers, and to improve farmers' incomes.

🧑‍🌾 Nurseries were established in July 2025 and the first harvests started in November.
🌞 Thanks to irrigation with solar pumps, the harvest and drying of peppers was extended from November 2025 to March 2026.
🌶️ Varieties used were open pollinated varieties Cayenne, Nafama and Bafarima rather than hybrids.
💰 In April 2026, five contracts were signed between cooperatives and wholesale traders in Sikasso, Bougouni and Yanfolila. In April, a total of 11.3 tons were sold for an amount of 21.7 million FCFA (~33,120 EUR).

Sales have only just started! In Yanfolila, harvesting and drying are continuing for plots that were transplanted in August and September 2025.

Last Friday, 20 farmers from Ruhango District in successfully completed a study tour and met farmers from Duhuzimbaraga Muhazi cooperative in Rwamagana District.

The visit offered a valuable opportunity for farmers from the UATA and IMPAKOMU cooperatives to learn more about greenhouse farming from a cooperative already well versed in market-oriented agriculture. Both cooperatives are supported with greenhouse farming through the European Commission funded PROFARM project.

During the tour, participants learned improved techniques in vegetable production, irrigation, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling, while also gaining practical insights into building strong and reliable market linkages.

Beyond the technical learning, the experience strengthened farmers’ confidence, mindset, and collaboration, positioning them to apply climate-smart practices and enhance their productivity.

Yesterday, we received a warm welcome by farmers' group Ella Alla at Dounet in . A member of the Union des Groupements Agricoles de Soumbalako (UGAS), the group is composed mostly of women with little experience in onion production.

As part of the Achmea Foundation funded Basalle Seto Project, EUCORD supported a demonstration of the Prema onion variety during the dry season. The demonstration yielded 66 kg translating to 33 tons per hectare. At 9,600 Guinean francs per kg this production would result in an impressive gross income of 317 million francs per hectare, or about 30,000 EUR. At the same time the onion leaves are also highly valued.

The project has triggered huge interest among the other 4,000 UGAS members who want to start growing Prema, both during the dry and rainy seasons. Onions are also a good rotation crop for potatoes, the other important crop produced by UGAS members.

🌾 Can you recognise the difference?

Image A or Image B, which one is barley and which one is wheat?

Here are a few clues:

🔎 Barley typically has longer awns, a thinner and slightly drooping spike, and a more “hairy” appearance.

🔎 Wheat generally has shorter awns, with a more compact and upright spike.

Barley is generally more tolerant of harsh conditions, including salinity and drought, allowing it to perform better than wheat in stressful, low-yielding environments, while wheat often outperforms barley in high-yielding, optimal environments.

💬 Do you know any other differences between wheat and barley? Let us know in the comments.

Wheat Value Chain Development in Senegal project, EUCORD’s Coordinator in Senegal, Amadou Diouf, recently welcomed Aschalew Admassu, EUCORD’s Senior Agronomist in Ethiopia since 2013. This exchange visit aims to share experience on developing irrigated wheat and barley production in the two countries.

With USAID projects coming to an end in 2025, we need new ways to keep restoring land in Guinea.

Thanks to a €1,210 donation from RIVULIS, we were able to plant a 1-hectare plot in 2024.

EUCORD, in partnership with Compagnie Fruitière de Daboya, aims to help more communities benefit from the same support.

🌳Just €1.10 can plant a tree.
Together, we can help more communities benefit.
