This morning, IFOAM Organics Europe, Agroecology Europe Slow Food International and European Agroforestry Federation co-organised a discussion at the European Parliament on how the post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) can better support systemic and territorial transitions towards sustainable food systems.

Hosted by MEPs Cristina Guarda (Greens/EFA) and Michal Wiezik (Renew Europe), the event brought together policymakers and stakeholders to discuss how public funding can effectively drive meaningful change in agriculture while delivering public goods and ensuring value for taxpayers.
A key message emerging from the discussion was the need for the future CAP to support holistic, whole-farm transitions rather than fragmented or isolated practices. In this context, speakers stressed the importance of preventing greenwashing and ensuring that policy support is built on concepts with clear definitions and robust foundations. This includes approaches recognised in EU legislation, such as organic farming, and internationally acknowledged frameworks such as agroecology, as defined by the FAO. By contrast, poorly defined concepts risk creating confusion, weakening accountability and opening the door to greenwashing and corporate capture. This is also the call made by several NGOs yesterday in their joint statement (https://www.organicseurope.bio/news/joint-statement-warns-against-regenerative-greenwashing-in-eu-policy-and-markets-while-recognising-credible-regenerative-practices/) against regenerative greenwashing in EU policy ad markets.

Participants highlighted that transition payments and future National and Regional Partnerhsip Plans should prioritise genuine whole-farm approaches capable of delivering environmental, social and economic benefits over the long term.

Beyond the CAP, the discussion also looked at successful territorial initiatives such as Organic Regions and Cities (Biodistricts). These models demonstrate how farmers, businesses, local authorities and citizens can work together to shape more sustainable food systems. By strengthening cooperation at local level, they generate environmental and economic benefits, reinforce social cohesion and increase regional resilience.

Most importantly, these initiatives send a strong signal to the next generation of farmers: sustainable transitions are possible when communities and institutions work together to support them. The future CAP can provide new tools to support farm transitions and demonstrate that economic growth can go hand in hand with resilient, sustainable farming systems.

Today, IFOAM Organics Europe, together with farmers’ organisations, environmental NGOs and civil society actors, published a joint statement (https://www.organicseurope.bio/content/uploads/2026/06/Joint-Statement_Regenerative-Greenwashing_Final-Version.pdf?dd) warning against the misleading use of the term “regenerative” in corporate branding and EU policy initiatives.

The signatories recognise and support credible regenerative practices, rooted in organic and agroecological principles. However, they warn that what is called "regenerative" can include highly degenerative practices and environmentally harmful practices to be marketed as sustainable, diverting attention, resources and recognition away from genuinely transformative solutions. This was also highlighted by the Corporate Europe Observatory in their article published today: https://corporateeurope.org/en/2026/06/degenerative-lobby

Millions of farmers across Europe are already building resilient food systems delivering concrete environmental and social benefits through credible, transparent and accountable approaches such as organic and agroecology. "Regenerative" greenwashing risks undermining both farmers’ efforts for genuine transformations and consumer trust.

Europe must ensure that actions speak louder than words and that future transitions remain credible, transparent, grounded in the public interest, and anchored in verifiable and publicly governed approaches.

Today’s seed and breeding rules are under growing pressure from patent debates and legal uncertainty. What’s at stake is simple: who controls what grows in our fields - and who gets excluded from it. Food should not be owned by a few.

Do you want to know how organic communities, farmers and local initiatives are building resilient food systems across Europe?

Today’s story takes us to Italy, Portugal and Sweden to explore how biodistricts work in practice and how territories are organising around organic farming as a shared development strategy.

Biodistricts show how organic farming can move beyond individual farms and become a territorial model. Across Europe, farmers, municipalities, businesses and citizens are aligning food production, public procurement, tourism, environmental management and local services within a long-term local vision.
These are not pilot projects.

They are governance models already operating on the ground, strengthening local markets, improving resilience and reconnecting production with communities.

We look at how biodistricts function and at territories where this approach is already delivering tangible results.

👉 Follow us to discover how organic communities are shaping a resilient future.
