The official think tank and political foundation of the EPP, led by Mikulas Dzurinda.

The Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies (previously the Centre for European Studies) was established in 2007 as the political foundation and official think tank of the European People’s Party (EPP). It embodies a pan-European mind-set based on centre-right, Christian Democrat, conservative and like-minded political values and research. It serves as a framework for national political foundations linked to member parties of the EPP, with 29 foundations currently members. Through its research, publications, conferences and online activities, the Martens Centre offers a platform for discussion among experts, politicians, policymakers and the European public. At the beginning of 2014, the Centre was renamed in honour of its late President and founder, Wilfried Martens, the EPP’s long-standing President and former Prime Minister of Belgium.

Three generations have grown up in peace.
What will it take to pass that peace on to the next? 🪖 🚨

That is one of the questions running through The European Peace, which we launched today. European integration created a space of peace from which any temptation of war disappeared. But the book also gives us a warning worth remembering:

🎙️ "Yet this achievement was never self-sustaining".

Today we came together to launch "Christian Democracy, Conservatism and the Challenge of the Extremes" and reflect on a question that reaches well beyond one book. What future lies ahead for Europe’s centre-right?

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and to Klaus Welle, Carlo Corazza, Antonio Polito, Gaetano Quagliariello, Dr. Federico Ottavio Reho, and our moderator Flavia Giacobbe for a discussion that took us from political identity and strategy to European unity and the future role of the EPP.

What does Spain’s mass regularisation mean for its economy?

Over 1 million people applied under Spain’s 2026 regularisation, making it, according to the authors, likely the largest such exercise ever undertaken in the EU.

The implications go well beyond the headline number:
▶️ More workers entering the formal economy means more social security contributions, but potentially higher labour costs for employers.
▶️ Most of those regularised did not enter Spain irregularly. Many initially arrived legally through visa-free arrangements or short-term permits.
▶️ Despite claims that regularisation encourages further migration, the evidence of such a pull factor remains inconclusive.

Yet the central question is not simply what Britain wants. Any route back towards the EU would require negotiation and European agreement.

For decades, European integration helped transform a continent marked by war and division into an area of peace, cooperation and political integration. Today, the foundations of that peace are being tested once again.

On 14 October, we will launch The European Peace – Keeping Pace in the Age of War" with :

Christian democracy and conservatism share political ground, but they are distinct traditions facing new pressures. The rise of the radical right is making the question of their identity and future increasingly important.

What if Russian elections are not designed to measure public opinion? 🤷‍♀️

Russia’s 2026 parliamentary vote delivered a comfortable victory for United Russia. But the more interesting question is why the Kremlin considered the election necessary in the first place.

Teona Lavrelashvili's new analysis argues that Russian elections serve purposes beyond electoral competition. They can reinforce legitimacy, test administrative capacity, mobilise society and project an image of wartime normality.

The result is a challenge for Europe. Understanding Russian politics requires looking beyond vote shares and seat counts to the functions elections perform inside the system.
