With this newly published history, we are celebrating 25 years of the EFFAT European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions, charting its post-WWII roots, through its major battles of the 21st century, and up to the present day challenges and opportunities facing sectoral action at the European level

This book is first and foremost a tribute to those essential workers, many of whom still face poverty wages, precarious work, and sheer exploitation - but without whom our societies could not function

💡 Compelling evidence that and the health of in society are deeply intertwined

Using empirical evidence from the Work and Democracy in Europe Survey (WADES), researchers Bart Meuleman, Arnim Langer, Andreas Hövermann and Bettina Kohlrausch find that democratic experiences at work consistently spill over into stronger support for democratic principles, greater institutional trust and lower susceptibility to anti-immigrant attitudes and anti-gender ideology

The WADES survey, organised by the Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut (WSI) - the Institute of Economic and Social Research of the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung - was conducted prior to the EU elections of 2024

In ten European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden), a sample of 1,500 workers were asked a series of questions about their work situation, as well as democratic values and political preferences

✅ The results confirm a strong work–democracy nexus: when workers experience meaningful participation, voice and efficacy in their professional environment, they are more likely to develop and sustain the attitudes and behaviours associated with democratic citizenship

🌡️ Climate change is reshaping working conditions across Europe. Our legislation however, is not keeping pace.

The new ETUI podcast explores the findings of "Climate change and workers’ health: Protecting workers against heat and other climate-related hazards", a report co-published by European Trade Union Institute - ETUII, EFFAT European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions, European Public Service Unions (EPSU) and EFBWW. It makes clear that occupational heat exposure is no longer an exceptional risk during heatwaves. For millions of workers, it is becoming part of everyday working life.

The discussion also looks at why Europe needs binding measures that better protect workers from heat and other climate-related workplace hazards.

Did you know that almost one third of workers in the EU report experiencing stress, depression or anxiety linked to their work❓

⚠️ These are the negative outcomes of what we call (PSR) at work, which constitute a major and growing occupational health problem in Europe

⚖️ The issue today is that EU legislation on occupational safety and health requires protection from all work-related risks, but fails to explicitly define and regulate PSR

🤷 This means that, in the absence of clear legal obligations, prevention efforts remain misdirected towards individuals rather than the more structural culprits: work organisation, design and management
