🔎 What is the state of funding for civil society in the EU?

The next long-term EU budget, called the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), is being negotiated. This will determine how money is spent across the EU for a seven year period (2028-2034). But is EU civil society receiving the support it needs to thrive?

We are grateful to EVP Roxana Minzatu for inviting us to the Implementation Dialogues on the upcoming EU Teachers and Trainers Agenda! 👏

It is high time to focus on the educators on the sector and develop a strategy to support them with the significant societal changes that led to an adaptation of how education and training is delivered.

We see the strategy being developed on good grounds, but regret that it only will apply to teachers in trainers working in formal education.

Our 2024 Position Paper on the Educator Profession makes it clear that the learning environment is an ecosystem with many professionals supporting teachers, and with teachers open to collaborate with support personnel, but also with informal and non-formal learning educators.

Moreover, adult educators must also be supported considering the EU's ambitions to bring 60% of adults into training by 2030. Our recommendations also focused on empowering educators to engage in cross-subject teaching and planning, on promoting distributed leadership, and on ensuring that the Erasmus+ programme is strengthened and continues to support the current and future generations of educators.

Erasmus+ is in danger! The funding for the future programme risks to be reduced, and this means less funding for our common European future! 🚨

--- What is happening? ✂️

In 2028, the EU will have a new budget for the Erasmus+ programme for seven years. The Member States and the EU institutions are currently negotiating this budget.

The European Commission started by proposing 40.8 billion EUR for Erasmus+. Compared to our current budget - 26.2 billion EUR - this might appear as an increase... BUT due to inflation, and due to new actions included in Erasmus+, this is not a real increase.

And the Member States now want to cut this further! Education represents around 2% of the EU budget, and even though our future depends on education, decision makers have yet again targeted this sector for further cuts. ⚠️

We promote the transformative power of Erasmus+, its great impact in Europe from a social and economic perspective, but also highlight the fact that this is the EU’s most known programme and the fourth greatest achievement according to European citizens. 👥

--- What comes next? ‼️

Before the next European Council meeting on 18-19 June, we launch our new Statement, urging Member States to not allow competing priorities to cut our future!

AI is on everyone's mind! 🗣️

Last week we joined Financial Times and LinkedIn's event discussing how to unlock the potential of AI for the labour market. Are we ready to speak about AI and the workplaces? Have we learned enough about AI? Do we have enough awareness in lifelong learning about AI?

On 29 June we will address these questions at the LLLP High Level Policy Debate on AI in Education! The event is invite-based, hosted at the European Parliament by Vice-President Victor Negrescu. 👥

LLLP members are ready to take charge and express the views of educators and learners to ensure that we make AI work for us and not the other way around!

The Irish Presidency will take over the Council of the EU, and we now have access to their upcoming priorities!

• What about education and training? 🤔

We are delighted to see a forward looking perspective towards developing Council Conclusions on STEM Education as well as on skills and competences for AI.

This is key, because the Council Conclusions are documents used to identify specific issues of concern and outline actions to take or goals to reach. They are adopted by the EU Member States Ministers responsible for the area discussed, therefore, the education-related ministers across the EU will negotiate and agree together on the content of these documents, charting a way forward that will have implications for all of us working in the sector.

LLLP's High Level Policy Debate on AI on 29 June anticipates the Council negotiations on AI and civil society welcomes the possibility of a constructive discussion. 🗣️

The 17 November Education for Sustainable Development Forum will be a fantastic opportunity to ensure that learning for sustainability stays high on the agenda.

At the same time, this is a period of great responsibility for the Irish Presidency considering the negotiations for the next Erasmus+ budget.

We hope to see commitment from the Member States to reinforce the Erasmus+ budget, ensuring at least the amount proposed by the European Parliament: 47.4 billion EUR. 💶
