The Brussels International Center is an independent, non-profit, think-and-do tank based in the capital of Europe that is committed to developing solutions to address the cyclical drivers of insecurity, economic fragility, and conflict the Middle East and Africa. BIC works to identify and explore underlying historical, economic, social, and political drivers behind today’s multidimensional and global challenges, and uses this research to provide forward-thinking, pragmatic, and concrete analyses to policy-makers, governments, and civil society.

Yesterday, a powerful and sudden flood severely struck the north of the country, leaving a trail of devastation and forcing local communities into a state of extreme emergency. The images and news coming in are heartbreaking, and tragically, a high number of casualties is feared.

In times like these, it is crucial to show our solidarity with those facing this terrible tragedy. The force of nature reminds us of our vulnerability, but also of the importance of standing together and offering support, even if just by keeping the spotlight on the situation.

A massive thank you to the rescue teams working tirelessly under incredibly difficult conditions. 🙏

🌍 Today, August 19, is World Humanitarian Day.

A stark new UN report brings us face to face with a devastating reality: those who dedicate their lives to saving others are increasingly being targeted. Weaponized drones and ruthless conflicts are changing the face of warfare, striking those trying to bring hope to the darkest corners of the world, from Gaza to Sudan.

Last year alone, nearly 1,000 humanitarian workers were victims of violence, with 350 lives tragically lost.

The words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres resonate with more urgency today than ever: "Disinformation is eroding trust. Humanitarian funding is being cut. And humanitarian access is being restricted."�

After days of forced isolation due to the presence of Israeli settlers, UNICEF has reached the village of Qusra (West Bank), delivering water, food, medicines, and hygiene kits.

However, some Palestinian families still remain surrounded.

The UN warns: "This situation must not become the new normal."

Imagine if, overnight, you were stripped of the right to study, work, or even leave the house independently. This is the nightmare Afghan women have been living for exactly 5 years.

Today, 2.4 million girls are denied access to schools. But the emergency doesn't end there: the UN warns that NGOs on the ground, the only ones still trying to provide essential aid, are at risk of shutting down due to drastic cuts in international funding.
