FAQstory no. 1: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 ‘𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐀𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫’ - 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎

First of all when we say food we mean FOOOD! Second of all did you know that the ‘𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐀𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫’ started out as a Pyjama Party Brunch?

In 2020 the Brussels Ballroom Community was barely a year old when covid hit. No possibility to gather in big numbers so publicized balls were out of the question. What did we do.. we took it to the underground. We would gather in parks, in peoples homes, wherever. Escaping from the harsh realities, we found solace in each other.
By the end of the year .be in Antwerp and .bxl in Brussels were giving us access to their spaces allowing us to structure the work.

To celebrate us surviving 2020 we initiated the End of Year pyjama party and practice function, which now has become the dinner. Cause Mimosas in the morning means no practice in the evening.

Since then every Unity Dinner has been a moment! Enjoy the snippets of the first ever unity gathering back in 2020.

We are gratefull to be able to continue the tradition and look forward to another unforgettable moment.

bell hooks made us remember;

In the wake of the Covid pandemic—after so much loss, so much unraveling—we began to look.
Look for connection.
Look for the unseen.
Look for what the physical plane could no longer offer.
We felt the spirit move within us, during balls, at the club, dancing in the spaces where our bodies remembered joy.

Still, the space to speak openly about our longing for our ancestors, our need for shared spirituality, wasn’t always there. So we facilitated one.

𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 is a gathering for all of us who are seeking gentler ground, deeper roots, and community in our remembering.

When an angel lands in Antwerp, she takes the form of Monicashflow—DJ, sonic storyteller, and curator of emotion. Guided by intuition and rooted in diasporic rhythm, Monica Kamara blends Afro House, Ambient, Gqom, Jazz, Batida, and Baile Funk into immersive soundscapes that move both body and spirit. We’re excited to host her latest project, “𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝,” a fusion of live poetry and electronic music that celebrates freedom, feeling, and collective joy. Check slide 3 to hear more.

We gagged when we heard this nasty 3way mix (slide 5). We instantly new we need her on the decks for our residency. Because on thing about FEMMI she doesn’t stick to one lane. Techno is the backbone, but rhythm drives everything.
Every set is shaped by deep digging into music, years or raving herself, and refusing to settle into one sound.
