Lujain is following human rights developments and documenting violations as they unfold. Nissaf is digging deeper, connecting the dots behind cases and patterns across the region. Sana is turning that work into stories, campaigns, and messages that can be seen and heard. Oumaima is keeping the people, projects, and priorities moving in the same direction. Lubna is keeping the people, numbers, and systems behind the work on track. M. A. is giving the work its visual language, turning ideas and human rights stories into the designs and videos you see online. And Mostafa is guiding the ship, keeping HuMENA moving forward even when the waters around human rights and civic space are anything but calm.

ما تعلّمناه من سجون الأسد ما لازم يبقى مجرد شهادة على الماضي.

محمد غميرة توفي تحت التعذيب في سوريا في ١٦ أغسطس ٢٠٢٦. اسمه اليوم يعيد فتح ملف كان يجب أن يُغلق إلى الأبد: التعذيب في السجون ومراكز الاحتجاز السورية.

بعد سقوط نظام الأسد، حماية المعتقلين، ومحاسبة المسؤولين عن التعذيب، ومنع تكرار انتهاكات السجون السورية هي جزء أساسي من أي حديث عن العدالة والمرحلة الانتقالية في سوريا.

التعذيب مو إرث لازم نتذكره وبس. هو ممارسة لازم تنتهي.

Mohamad Ghomaira is not a name from the archives of Assad’s prisons. He died under torture in Syria on 16 August 2026.

His death brings an urgent issue back into focus: torture, deaths in detention, and the treatment of detainees in Syria did not automatically end with the fall of the Assad regime.

After decades of torture and enforced disappearance in Syrian prisons and detention centres, protecting detainees and holding perpetrators accountable must be central to Syria’s transitional justice process.

Torture cannot be allowed to become part of Syria’s next chapter.

في ، لا يكفي أن نحتفل بالعمل الإنساني، بل علينا أن نتوقف أيضًا عند الثمن الذي يدفعه من يقومون به.

منذ مايو/أيار 2024، تقبع سعدية مصباح، رئيسة جمعية «منامتي» والناشطة المناهضة للعنصرية، في السجن في تونس. وبعد قرابة عامين من الإيقاف التحفظي، صدر بحقها في 19 مارس/آذار 2026 حكم بالسجن ثماني سنوات في قضية مرتبطة بأنشطة الجمعية وتمويلها. وفي 23 يونيو/حزيران، أيدت محكمة الاستئناف الحكم، فيما لا تزال القضية أمام محكمة التعقيب.

لكن سعدية ليست وحدها. شهدت تونس ملاحقات واحتجازات طالت عاملين وعاملات في منظمات تقدم الدعم للمهاجرين واللاجئين وطالبي اللجوء، في قضايا ارتبطت بأنشطة هذه المنظمات وعملها وتمويلها.

لهذا، يحمل بالنسبة لنا اليوم معنى واضحًا: حماية من يحمون الآخرين، وضمان ألا يتحول الدفاع عن الحقوق وتقديم المساعدة إلى سبب للملاحقة والسجن.

ندعو السلطات التونسية إلى الإفراج عن سعدية مصباح، ووقف ملاحقة العاملين والعاملات في المجالين الإنساني والحقوقي بسبب عملهم المشروع، وضمان حق المجتمع المدني في العمل بحرية وأمان.

فحين يصبح مصير من يدافع عن الحقوق كمصير من ينتهكها، فعن أي عدالة نتحدث؟

On , we draw attention to those who pay a price for standing with others.

Saadia Mosbah, president of the anti-racism organisation Mnemty and a Tunisian human rights defender, has been detained since May 2024 in a case linked to the organisation’s activities and funding.

After nearly two years in pre-trial detention, she was sentenced to eight years in prison on 19 March 2026. The Tunis Court of Appeal upheld the sentence on 23 June. Saadia and her co-defendants subsequently appealed to the Court of Cassation. She remains in prison today.

Her case is not isolated. Humanitarian and human rights workers supporting migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Tunisia have faced detention and prosecution in cases linked to their organisations, activities and funding.

We call on the Tunisian authorities to free Saadia Mosbah, end the prosecution of humanitarian and human rights workers for their legitimate work, and ensure that civil society can operate safely and freely without fear of detention or prosecution.

من مراكش، تطرح قضيته أسئلة حول تجريم التعبير على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، واستخدام الاعتقال الاحتياطي في قضايا الرأي، والحق في الاحتجاج السلمي والمحاكمة العادلة والدفاع.

غدًا، التاسع عشر من غشت، يمثل مراد هبال أمام المحكمة.

حرية التعبير حق، وممارستها سلمياً لا ينبغي أن تقود إلى السجن.

À la veille de son procès, l’affaire Mourad Habal relance le débat sur la liberté d’expression au Maroc.

À Marrakech, son cas soulève des questions sur la criminalisation de l’expression sur les réseaux sociaux, le recours à la détention provisoire dans des affaires liées à la liberté d’expression, ainsi que sur le droit de manifester pacifiquement, à une défense et à un procès équitable.

Demain, 19 août, Mourad Habal comparaîtra devant le tribunal.

La liberté d’expression est un droit. L’exercer pacifiquement ne devrait pas conduire en prison.

الفن في المنفى يتقاطع مع أسئلة السياسة والهوية وحرية التعبير، ومع التوقعات التي قد تُفرض على الفنان داخل المجتمع المضيف.

In this video, Anas Younes introduces the thinking behind the **Artivism in Exile Toolkit**, developed in partnership with HuMENA, and the practical tools it offers artists and cultural collectives seeking to bring art, activism, and social change together.

لا يزال أربعة نشطاء تونسيين مرتبطين بأسطول الصمود العالمي، وهم وائل نوار، وغسان الهنشيري، وغسان البغديري، ونبيل الشنوفي، رهن الإيقاف التحفظي بعد نحو خمسة أشهر على إيقافهم في مارس/آذار 2026.

ومع استمرار التحقيق القضائي، تعرب هيومينا عن قلقها إزاء طول مدة حرمانهم من الحرية، إلى جانب التقارير المتعلقة بتدهور أوضاعهم الصحية وعدم ملاءمة ظروف الاحتجاز. وتشير المعلومات التي وثقتها هيومينا بشأن غسان الهنشيري، إلى جانب المعلومات المنشورة حول غسان البغديري، إلى تأخر في الحصول على الرعاية الطبية، والاكتظاظ، وصعوبة ظروف الاحتجاز داخل سجن المرناقية.

تدعو هيومينا السلطات التونسية إلى الإفراج عن النشطاء الأربعة إلى حين محاكمتهم، ما لم تتمكن السلطات من إثبات أن استمرار احتجازهم ضروري ومتناسب ويستند إلى أسباب قانونية وفردية. وإلى حين الإفراج عنهم، يجب ضمان حصولهم على الرعاية الطبية الملائمة وظروف احتجاز تحترم صحتهم وكرامتهم وحقوقهم الأساسية.

Nearly five months in pretrial detention. Wael Naouar, Ghassen Henchiri, Ghassen Boughdiri and Nabil Channoufi remain detained in Tunisia in connection with the Global Sumud Flotilla investigation.

HuMENA is concerned by the length of their detention and reports of deteriorating health and inadequate prison conditions. We call on the Tunisian authorities to release the four activists pending trial unless their continued detention is shown to be lawful, necessary and proportionate, and to ensure their immediate access to adequate medical care.

Four Tunisian activists associated with the Global Sumud Flotilla: Wael Naouar, Ghassen Henchiri, Ghassen Boughdiri and Nabil Channoufi; remain in pretrial detention nearly five months after their arrests in March 2026.

As the judicial investigation continues, HuMENA raises serious concerns over the prolonged deprivation of their liberty, as well as reports of deteriorating health and inadequate detention conditions. Information documented by HuMENA regarding Ghassen Henchiri, alongside publicly reported information on Ghassen Boughdiri, points to delayed medical care, overcrowding and difficult conditions inside El Mornaguia prison.

HuMENA calls on the Tunisian authorities to release the four activists pending trial unless their continued detention can be demonstrated to be necessary, proportionate and based on individualized lawful grounds.

Pending their release, the authorities must ensure access to adequate medical care and detention conditions that respect their health, dignity and fundamental rights.

Like any other group, artists get targeted too. Across the MENA region, many artists have faced prosecution, censorship, intimidation, or exile simply because of what they created. As music, film, theatre, visual art, and other forms of expression reached wider audiences, authorities increasingly recognized their influence and, in many cases, responded by trying to silence them.

This reality has shaped what we know today as artivism, where art becomes a way to challenge injustice, tell untold stories, and reclaim space for expression.

To support artists forced into exile, we worked with Anas Younes, a theatre practitioner and cultural researcher, to develop the "Artivism in Exile" Toolkit. It is a practical resource that brings together guidance, tools, and experiences to help artists continue creating, advocating, and navigating life in exile. Link to download is in the first comment.
