Since its creation, AEIDL has specialised in information activities and the coordination of European, national or regional networks.

AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development) is a Brussels-based association that learns from and fosters community-led innovation to revitalise local communities from across Europe. A RANGE OF COMPETENCES

With extensive experience in the coordination of networks, projects and programmes, AEIDL is well positioned to provide a wide range of services to clients in European and i

nternationally, taking account of linguistic and cultural diversity. This includes: online information ("helpdesks"), establishing networks and contacts, supporting territorial cooperation, organising events, identifying and analysing best practices, consulting, monitoring and evaluation, journalism, webpage development and editing, database and document management services, the dissemination of information products to specific target groups, etc. AEIDL’s main partners and/or clients are local, regional, national and European authorities and development agents, together with citizens groups, professional organizations and NGOs. This “traditional” work has evolved significantly. Over the years and with every contract, the Association has expanded the scope of its activities and now offers a range of high quality services in the areas of: consulting, evaluations, studies and the monitoring of projects and programmes, assistance in setting up cooperation projects between territories, editing and publishing, web design, the development and implementation of communication activities, the dissemination of good practice and know-how, and the organisation of training programmes and events. AEIDL is organised around different technical units. These units take on responsibility for the different categories of services in a flexible manner, supported by a multidisciplinary and multilingual team of employees and freelance consultants.

📢 The Policy Brief on migration narratives is out!

Why have migration narratives shifted? What challenges are we facing, and what can we do to foster more inclusive and sustainable narratives?

Our latest policy brief identifies seven interconnected challenges and puts forward seven recommendations.

They share a common premise: communication campaigns alone, however well-intentioned, are not enough. Sustainable narrative change requires structural reform - of media ecosystems, participation frameworks, funding logics, and the political conditions in which migration is discussed.

📄 This Policy Brief, developed as part of the EPIC-UP project, brings together insights from desk research, expert consultations, and the findings and recommendations of the EPIC-UP Policy Lab on migration narratives, held on 21 April 2026.

AEIDL has just completed a training series for community leaders on ‘Inclusive Decision Making’ and ‘Social Innovation’ as part of the project in Karlskoga (Sweden), Penacova (Portugal) and Milan (Italy).

❓ Who are community leaders? They are various representatives of their local community chosen for their legitimacy and ability to speak on behalf of and to the local community due to their work, activities and/or relationships.

❓ What are the community leaders for in the project? UTOPIZE focuses on involving local leaders in re-imagining the future of different spaces. For example, in Karlskoga 🇸🇪, we explored three different neighbourhoods and examined how to promote ecological awareness, balance new housing development, and preserve cultural heritage. In Penacova 🇵🇹, the focus was on activating different spaces for cultural, educational, and community events, and creating more flexible living and working conditions. In Ponte Lambro, Milan 🇮🇹, we centered on reconnecting the neighbourhood physically and socially with the wider city.

❓So what were the community leaders trained on? They learned about new tools and approaches to work towards more inclusive participation, how to engage people whose voices are often overlooked, and how to test ideas that can improve life in their local areas.

The training sessions led by Mikulaš Lakatos and Armelle Ledan combined presentations, discussions and practical exercises in groups, which allowed participants to share their experiences, challenges and ideas for the future of their communities 🗨️.

🤝 supported the organisation and implementation of the training sessions and made sure that all partners and participants were aligned around the objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes of the activities.

👉 Next up: all community leaders will be trained to use and demonstrate how to use the digital tools meant to help the local communities visualise the future of their living areas.

Following our recent webinar on the drivers of territorial cohesion, AEIDL has published a new discussion paper by Serafin Pazos Vidal and Janne Sinerma exploring how the EU's forthcoming Strategy can help ensure people have a genuine choice to remain and thrive in the places they call home.

Drawing on AEIDL's long-standing work on territorial cohesion and evidence from several projects, the paper highlights the importance of:

🔹 Access to essential services
🔹 Place-based governance
🔹 Functional territories
🔹 Local delivery capacity
🔹 Integrated, people-centred policies

Rather than proposing a new individual right, the paper argues that the Right to Stay depends on creating the conditions that make staying a viable, attractive and sustainable option for communities across .

Last Friday, 3 July, we held our mid-year Team Meeting 🫂

In the morning, we held a series of sessions focusing on our achievements and our mid-year review. Afterwards, our project managers took part in a workshop at , where they learned how to provide constructive feedback to junior staff, peers and senior colleagues alike.

Through role-play exercises, they practised real-life conversations, shared their experiences and explored techniques for turning feedback into meaningful agreements and commitments for improvement.

After a delicious lunch in St Gilles, the team returned to the studio for a series of trust- and team-building activities designed to strengthen collaboration, communication and mutual trust.

is our priority, but to maximise our impact, it is equally important to invest in our team. Creating opportunities to relax, laugh and connect with one another helps us work together with greater cohesion, trust and effectiveness.
