Since its creation, AEIDL has specialised in information activities and the coordination of European, national or regional networks.

AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development) is a Brussels-based association that learns from and fosters community-led innovation to revitalise local communities from across Europe. A RANGE OF COMPETENCES

With extensive experience in the coordination of networks, projects and programmes, AEIDL is well positioned to provide a wide range of services to clients in European and internationally, taking account of linguistic and cultural diversity. This includes: online information ("helpdesks"), establishing networks and contacts, supporting territorial cooperation, organising events, identifying and analysing best practices, consulting, monitoring and evaluation, journalism, webpage development and editing, database and document management services, the dissemination of information products to specific target groups, etc. AEIDL’s main partners and/or clients are local, regional, national and European authorities and development agents, together with citizens groups, professional organizations and NGOs. This “traditional” work has evolved significantly. Over the years and with every contract, the Association has expanded the scope of its activities and now offers a range of high quality services in the areas of: consulting, evaluations, studies and the monitoring of projects and programmes, assistance in setting up cooperation projects between territories, editing and publishing, web design, the development and implementation of communication activities, the dissemination of good practice and know-how, and the organisation of training programmes and events. AEIDL is organised around different technical units. These units take on responsibility for the different categories of services in a flexible manner, supported by a multidisciplinary and multilingual team of employees and freelance consultants.

Meet Truagh Spirit Community-Led Social Innovation Model, one of the projects selected for the 2nd Call for Community-Led Social Innovation )!

🌱 Based in Ireland, Truagh Spirit is a social enterprise developing community-led initiatives that respond to local needs and support people in the community. From its 'Meals on Wheels' service to other local activities and events, Truagh Spirit brings together service users and community members to create practical responses that strengthen local support and connection.

Its community-led approach reflects the spirit of the CLSI Call: local communities identifying needs, coming together and developing solutions that create positive social change.

🌍 How can local innovation and community action shape regional, national and European policy?

On 13 October, AEIDL was pleased to organise the session “From Grassroots Innovation to EU Policy: Governance Pathways Linking Local Action and European Strategies” at .
Bringing together our three Horizon Europe sister projects, Futural project, SMART ERA and Ruractive, alongside 60 policy actors from Brussels and beyond, the session explored how grassroots initiatives can help shape more inclusive, responsive and resilient European policies.

💡 Key takeaways from the discussion:
🔹 𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 (ERCA - European Rural Community Alliance) highlighted the essential role of organised rural communities in shaping their own futures. Futural project shows that 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀. "Right to Stay" requires empowered communities capable of influencing policy and development pathways.

🔹 Matteo Gerosa (Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK) reminded us that technology alone does not transform territories, communities do. SMART ERA shows digital innovation works best when communities identify challenges, co-design solutions and use technology as an enabler.

🔹 Claudia De Luca (University of Bologna) presented the Ruractive shows that many transformative innovations originate outside institutions, in grassroots initiatives, social enterprises, civil society organisations and citizen networks. Policy must recognise, support and connect these initiatives so that local creativity becomes a driver of territorial resilience and systemic change.

🔹 Vania Freitas (Assembly of European Regions (AER)) highlighted the need for future Cohesion Policy and regional development to move beyond funding innovation towards creating governance systems that allow grassroots experience and local knowledge to shape policy continuously.

𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲'𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲; it grows from communities, places and people; public policy must create the conditions.

👩‍🌾👩‍💼👩‍🔬 | On this , we are putting rural themselves at the centre.

Across Europe, women are leading businesses, strengthening communities, preserving cultural heritage, driving innovation and creating new opportunities for more resilient and inclusive rural areas. Yet inequalities remain.

In EU rural areas in 2023:
🔹 69.7% of women aged 20-64 were employed, compared with 81.0% of men, an employment gap of 11.3 percentage points.
🔹 26.5% of employed worked part-time, compared with just 6.0% of rural men.
🔹 22.5% of rural women aged 16+ were at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
🔹 At the same time, 38.4% of rural women aged 25-34 had tertiary education, compared with 25.3% of rural men, showing both women’s progress and the need to ensure that rural areas offer opportunities to put their skills into practice.

But behind these figures are women shaping the future of their territories every day.

🗣️ Through the Rural Pact Community Group on Women in Rural Areas, coordinated by AEIDL, women and rural stakeholders from nine European countries have shared their stories, photographs and reflections with us.

A new European adventure begins! 🚀 AEIDL is joining EQUATERRA , a new Horizon Europe project working to support greener, safer and more resilient recovery in through nature-based, bio-based, circular and digital solutions.

With 14 partners from 7 countries, will develop and demonstrate innovative solutions through three Systemic Innovation Pilots focused on contaminated agricultural land, the Irpin river basin and conflict-derived construction debris.

🤝 AEIDL’s role? We will lead communication, dissemination, exploitation and policy engagement, helping connect the project’s innovations with stakeholders and supporting their uptake and wider impact, as well as supporting policy analysis and producing the policy roadmap.

🔬 EQUATERRA will also develop an AI-enhanced digital platform, Decision Support System and open-access data portal to support evidence-based green reconstruction planning.
