EuroGeoSurveys

EuroGeoSurveys Europe's network of national geological surveys for sustainable development.

Welcome to the official page of EuroGeoSurveys - the association of the European Geological Surveys! We are a network of 38 national geological surveys from across Europe, working together to provide reliable and impartial earth science information and advice to support sustainable development, environmental protection, and resource management. Through our expertise in geology, minerals,

energy, groundwater, and raw materials, we contribute to policy-making, research, innovation, and education at the European and international levels. Follow us to stay up-to-date with our latest news, projects, events, and publications, and to engage with our community of geoscientists, stakeholders, and enthusiasts. Join us in exploring the fascinating world of geology and its applications for a better future!

Europe's subsurface is a strategic asset that supports a wide range of societal needs, including renewable energy, energy storage, groundwater resources, and raw materials.

💡 In our new position paper, we call for a comprehensive approach to integrated surface and subsurface management within land-use planning, ensuring that policies and regulations are aligned to support the sustainable management of underground space.

🌍 How can geothermal energy move from niche to mainstream in Europe?

Wa are pleased to contribute to the workshop organised by International Energy Agency (IEA) and Carnegie Europe taking place this week.

Julie Hollis will join the discussion on how innovation, policy, regulation and industrial collaboration can help overcome key barriers to geothermal development, from exploration uncertainty and drilling costs to permitting challenges and access to subsurface data.

A highlight will be the latest developments of the GSEU - Geological Service for Europe Pan-European Atlas of Sustainable Geo-Energy Capacities, showcasing how harmonised geological data can support the sustainable deployment of geothermal energy across Europe.

Next week, Julie Hollis will represent EuroGeoSurveys at EGEC Geothermal's European Geothermal Summit, joining representatives from the European Commission and industry in the dedicated discussion on the geothermal measures set out within AccelerateEU.

Building on decades of integration and harmonisation of Europe's geothermal subsurface data, geological surveys are helping turn subsurface knowledge into investment-ready insight. Strengthening this cooperation through the vision of a Geological Service for Europe will be highlighted as a key step towards accelerating geothermal deployment at continental scale.

We look forward to contributing to this conversation in Brussels ♨️

"I don’t think there’s ever been this much recognition at EU level that geology is crucial for policy implementation. The challenge now is to make our contribution in a coordinated way."
— Julie Hollis at the Swedish Mining Research and Innovation Days 2026

As demand for critical raw materials grows, geological surveys play a vital role in supporting the minerals sector through the delivery of pre-competitive geoscientific data, from geological mapping to geophysics and geochemistry.

💡 Strong baseline data reduces investment risk, supports responsible exploration and strengthens Europe's raw materials resilience.

This is the vision behind a 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞: bringing together the expertise of Europe’s national geological surveys to deliver shared knowledge, coordinated action and greater European impact. 🎯

Because Europe's resilience depends not only on resources, but on collaboration and knowledge.

💧 How can Europe strengthen water resilience while advancing its objectives on critical raw materials and competitiveness, without compromising human health, nature, and biodiversity?

In our response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the targeted revision of the Water Framework Directive, we highlight the importance of subsurface integrated spatial planning and identify key priorities to enable harmonised, risk-based, data-driven, and efficient implementation, while maintaining high environmental protection standards.

Landslides are among Europe’s most widespread geohazards, with significant social and economic impacts across the continent. Geological assessment is key to understanding and reducing these risks.

🌍 Our Earth Observation and Geohazards Expert Group is developing harmonised methodologies for landslide susceptibility mapping, combining conditioning factors and inventory data from Geological Surveys across Europe.
