🌍 Today is 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲, and we celebrate Europe’s geodiversity as the foundation of our natural heritage and of the resources we rely on, from groundwater and raw materials to energy resources and underground space.

Understanding this diversity is at the heart of what national geological surveys across Europe do. By bringing their expertise together, we are building the Geological Service for Europe to make geological knowledge accessible and useful for the decisions that will strengthen Europe’s resilience.

♨️ Geothermal resources are local, but the knowledge and experience needed to develop them can and should be shared internationally.

This is the message from our GeoEnergy Experts Cornelia Steiner (GeoSphere Austria) and Ignasi Herms (Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya) after joining the 2026 Taiyuan Energy Low Carbon Development Forum and International Geothermal Forum in China.

The visit brought opportunities to exchange knowledge, share European experience, and strengthen international cooperation on geothermal energy.

🌊 We have contributed to the EU Call for Evidence on the European Ocean Research and Innovation Strategy, calling for coordinated European action to develop harmonised and interoperable geological knowledge of the marine environment.

This knowledge is essential to support better decisions for Europe’s seas, coasts and sustainable blue economy. ✅

Building on GSEU Geological Service for Europe, this is also an opportunity to turn European geological cooperation into a lasting operational capability.

As Europe strengthens its approach to critical raw materials, we are calling for stronger minerals intelligence to support informed decisions on investment, supply security, and resilience.

In our response to the European Commission's Call for Evidence on the future European Critical Raw Materials Centre, we highlight the need to combine market intelligence with authoritative geological knowledge, including Europe's geological potential, resource base, exploration activity, and future supply opportunities. ⛏️

We also underline the contribution of Geological Survey Organisations and the emerging Geological Service for Europe, which is being established as the operational service arm of EuroGeoSurveys, in providing the evidence needed for long-term strategic decision-making.
