This week in Strasbourg the European Parliament was debating how to fix what has become almost every young person’s nightmare - housing 🏠🇪🇺

While not a traditional topic on the EU’s political agenda (and competencies), Brussels has realised in the recent years that it must act to ensure all Europeans have a roof above their heads. 🙌

From appointing the first Commissioner responsible for housing to publishing just last month the Afordable Housing Plan, the EU is moving forward in this direction. ⏩

🇪🇺 Democracy should never be taken for granted.

At the Democracy Forum at the European Parliament in Brussels, discussions focused on some of the key challenges facing European democracies today from political polarisation and populism to foreign interference and threats to the cohesion of the European Union.

The growing influence of big tech and artificial intelligence was also at the centre of the debate, including the role of algorithms, disinformation and online platforms in shaping public debate and political opinions.

Protecting democracy also means asking how we can build a free, pluralistic and transparent digital space.

Last month a surprising sight has emerged when the Royal Albert Hall was flooded by a sea of blue EU flags during the annual Last Night of the Proms.

While this has brought hope to those who always believed Brexit was mistake and a political failure of the British government, the moment also coincided with discussions being held between the prime ministers of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales about a potential break with London and closer ties with Brussels instead.

For now, this scenario remains distant but it does point out to one important lesson: as Europeans, when facing challenges, we are stronger together! 🙌🇪🇺

What happened in Turkey earlier this month, shocked many, with dozens of protesters having been detained for opposing the state oppression of civil society. ‼️

In a country where the rights of one group are not respected, the rights of the society at large are at risk. Democracy across the globe is increasingly under pressure, and Europe makes no exception of that. 🇪🇺

🇸🇪 Sweden has voted. What happens next?

Sweden’s 2026 general election has produced a closely divided political landscape.

The Social Democrats remained the largest party with 28.0% of the vote, while the Sweden Democrats fell to 17.5%, down from 20.5% in 2022. Overall, the centre-left bloc secured 176 seats against 173 for the centre-right.

But winning the most seats does not automatically mean forming a government.

Magdalena Andersson has now abandoned her attempt to form one, after the Left Party withdrew its support. The next step is for the Speaker of the Riksdag to explore other options.

👉 So, what do the results tell us about the future of Swedish politics?
