👉 The real impact of hashtag ’s debt crisis is keenly felt by women like Edna. Following one of the most far-reaching austerity programmes ever imposed by the International Monetary Fund, public services and social safety nets have been slashed, and the cost of living has increased.

🪡 Edna has dedicated her life to the country’s women-led apparel industry. Following a workplace accident, she has been left vulnerable, unable to pay for medical bills, and facing increasing personal debt to pay for private healthcare.

👉 Corporations avoid paying taxes, often paying a lower effective tax rate than the rest of us, and contribute to the that’s driving up our expenses and killing the planet.

Nations are losing revenue on underpaid taxes.
We’re losing out on a liveable planet.
There is a chance to change that.

📌 The 5th round of negotiations on a UN Tax Convention will start next Monday in New York. This is a rare opportunity for climate and economic justice. This has the potential to change the way corporations profit and move the money to where it belongs: with the people.

Edna is one of the many women and girls deeply impacted by the debt crisis in Sri Lanka. Aged 57, she has worked for almost 30 years in the country’s key apparel industry and has seen first hand how her labour has boosted the industry in her area and enriched the factory owners.

But today she cannot work. A work-place accident has left her with no compensation or support from the industry she dedicated her life to for decades, or from the government which has benefitted from her labour.

After years of International Monetary Fund-imposed austerity, social protection nets have been gutted and cost of living has increased, leaving the most vulnerable unable to pay for medical bills, basic access to food or housing.

When classrooms come second to creditors, an entire generation pays the price. Money that should be opening school doors is sent to private lenders instead, under rules Egypt had little say in.
