While the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group say Madagascar’s debt is sustainable, Dina has a different story to tell.

The young climate and human rights activist exposes a reality where debt, extractivism and the climate crisis reinforce one another. A reality where debt payments are prioritised above investment in access to water and climate-resilient agriculture.

But communities are not passive; they are organising and developing alternatives such as sustainable agriculture, local solutions, and resilience initiatives, with young people at the heart of these projects.

In 2024, Egypt spent over half of government revenue on repaying external debt. At the same time, everyday Egyptians are seeing prices for everyday items, including food, skyrocket, in part due to International Monetary Fund-mandated austerity and the withdrawal of food and energy price subsidies.
The result? Women and girls are tasked with taking on increasingly precarious jobs in order to put food on the table.

Edna is one of the many women and girls deeply impacted by the debt crisis in Sri Lanka. Aged 57, she has worked for almost 30 years in the country’s key apparel industry and has seen first hand how her labour has boosted the industry in her area and enriched the factory owners.

But today she cannot work. A work-place accident has left her with no compensation or support from the industry she dedicated her life to for decades, or from the government which has benefitted from her labour.

After years of International Monetary Fund-imposed austerity, social protection nets have been gutted and cost of living has increased, leaving the most vulnerable unable to pay for medical bills, basic access to food or housing.
