Using a mobile phone behind the wheel is far more than a distraction. It puts lives at risk and continues to cause devastating road crashes, lifelong injuries, and the loss of loved ones.

๐Ÿค” The webinar highlighted not only the causes and consequences of distracted driving, but also innovative solutions that can help address this growing problem. While education, awareness and prevention remain essential, responsible societies must also introduce effective enforcement and modern technologies that protect all road users from dangerous behaviour.

Artificial intelligence is proving to be a powerful tool in detecting illegal mobile phone use and changing driver behaviour. Today, members of FEVR came together for the annual General Assembly to review the activities and achievements of the past year, approve the annual and financial reports, and discuss the future direction and priorities of the federation.

A particularly emotional moment of the meeting was dedicated to the memory of Eleni Karidi ฮ•.ฮฅ.ฮ˜ฮฅ.ฮค.ฮ‘ ฮกฮŸฮ”ฮŸฮฅ - ฮ ฮฑฯฮฑฯ„ฮทฯฮทฯ„ฮฎฯฮนฮฟ ฮŸฮดฮนฮบฮฎฯ‚ ฮ‘ฯƒฯ†ฮฌฮปฮตฮนฮฑฯ‚, a long-standing advocate for the rights of road traffic victims and a respected member of the FEVR family. The Assembly also provided an opportunity to remember all those we have lost and to honour the organisations, professionals, volunteers, and individuals who work every day to improve road safety and provide support to victims and their families.

We are proud of the many activities carried out by FEVR at both European and global levels. Throughout the past year, FEVR has actively participated in international conferences, road safety initiatives, policy discussions, and advocacy efforts, ensuring that the voices of road traffic victims and their families are heard and represented.

A special highlight was the continued successful cooperation among organisations worldwide through the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. Together, we have demonstrated that a united voice can raise awareness, strengthen support for victims, and inspire action towards safer mobility and the Vision Zero goal.

This year's General Assembly also marked an important milestone with the expansion of our network. We were delighted to officially welcome new member organisations from Serbia- AKTIV NS, Bosnia and Herzegovina- Udruลพenje ลพrtava saobraฤ‡ajnih nezgoda "STEP" and Bulgaria- Angels on the road- ะกะดั€ัƒะถะตะฝะธะต โ€œะะฝะณะตะปะธ ะฝะฐ ะŸัŠั‚ัโ€ into the FEVR family. We look forward to working together, sharing experiences, and creating positive change across Europe.

Thank you to all members, partners, and supporters for your dedication, commitment, and trust. Together, we continue to strengthen the voice of road traffic victims and work towards a future with safer roads, stronger support systems, and fewer tragedies.

Yesterday, 26 May 2026, we received devastating news from Belgium. In Buggenhout, a passenger train collided with a school minibus carrying children with special needs to school.

Four people lost their lives: two children (aged 12 and 15), their 27-year-old supervisor, and the 49-year-old driver of the minibus. Five other children were seriously injured.

Erasmus+ Activities Began with a Minute of Silence for Eleni Karydi

Today, we officially started the 5-day Erasmus+ exchange โ€œYouth in Action 4 Road Safety.โ€

The programme, which includes a wide range of daily activities, began with a minute of silence in memory of our dear friend and President of ฮ•. Her organisation is also represented at the exchange by five students, who were deeply affected by this loss.

The opening continued with lectures by FEVR President Robert ล taba, Programme Manager of Zavod Varna Pot Kaja Kobal, and clinical psychologist Dr Urลกa ฤŒiลพman ล taba, who addressed the challenges faced by both crash victims and those responsible for collisions.

๐Ÿ’” Dear friends,

Today, we received the sad news that Eleni Karidi, our dear friend and President of ฮ•.

With her departure, we have lost a remarkable, compassionate and selfless advocate for the rights of road traffic victims, not only in Rhodes and Greece, but also across Europe and globally. Her warmth, wisdom, and the unique, almost maternal way in which she approached every individual, organisation, and high-level representative who could contribute to reducing the consequences of road crashes were truly exceptional.

When extraordinary people leave us, they leave behind a deep sense of emptiness. Yet Eleni also leaves us a legacy of values: unity, connection, and a constant search for solutions, which will continue to guide and inspire us all. She was a great light, shining even during her illness, always finding time for each of us, offering thoughtful advice and reminding us of the true value of life, human dignity, and the importance of educating future generations about safe and sustainable mobility.

Eleni was always deeply engaged in FEVR. She served as a Board member, organised General Assemblies, and was a strong advocate for a united organisation bringing together national NGOs supporting victims of road traffic crashes. As the founder of EFTHITA, she also believed in empowering younger generations โ€” and thanks to her dedication and generosity, we are proud to have Tsampika-Rafaela Moustaka as an active member of the FEVR Board today.

On a personal level, I have lost a dear friend, mentor, and a person whose wise and heartfelt guidance was truly invaluable.

Eleni, you have left an indelible mark in our hearts and within FEVR. We will continue to follow the path you helped shape. โ€œOne voice of road victimsโ€ was your vision and your lifelong commitment and together, we will carry it forward.

Dear Eleni, thank you for everything.
On behalf of the FEVR Board, and in my personal capacity, I extend our deepest condolences to Eleni's family and to all members of EFTHITA.

With respect and sorrow,

FEVR on IRTAD 2026, Athens- Better Road Safety Data for Better Road Safety Performance

FEVR vice president Katarzyna Dobrzaล„ska-Junco actively participated in Athens in scientific researchers conference IRTAD 2026 in Athens, Greece, hosted by a very friend of FEVR, professor George Yannis.

The presentation of the vice president concerned the influence of communication on road safety, reduction of the number of victims and methods of building partnerships to use the research data in order to achieve better results moving towards Vision Zero.

The objectives of the Conference are to discuss improvements in the quality of data systems and data analysis in IRTAD and other countries by fostering knowledge transfer among participants, with particular emphasis on road safety performance.

The conference aims to:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Promote data-driven road safety policies and evaluation
๐Ÿ‘‰Explore the role of emerging data sources in enhancing road safety knowledge
๐Ÿ‘‰Showcase recent initiatives to improve the quality of safety data collection and analysis

We thank all the organizers for the event, researchers, scientists, amount of professional researches all over the world that help to understand better the data of today, in order to avoid more victims in the future:
"If we cannot measure it, we cannot improve it".

Did you know? Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users.

Unlike drivers, they are far less protected in the event of a crash, which means even a small mistake on the road can have devastating consequences. Protecting those who walk, cycle, or travel on two wheels is essential for creating safer, more liveable cities and communities.

Safer infrastructure, responsible speeds, and greater awareness can make a real difference: helping ensure that everyone can move safely on our roads.๐Ÿซถ

At FEVR, we work to ensure that the voices of road crash victims and their families remain at the heart of road safety efforts across Europe.

Easter holidays is a time that gently reminds us that even after the darkest moments, light finds its way back. After every hardship, there is hope. After every pain, the possibility of new life and new beginnings. To all who celebrate these days, may this season bring you peace in your hearts, warmth in your homes, and strength for the days ahead.

As many of you will be travelling, we kindly remind everyone to take care on the roads, so that all journeys end safely, and everyone returns home to their loved ones. And let this also be a reminder that road safety is not only for holidays, but something we must carry with us every single day.

May it also carry a quiet reminder that even in loss, love endures, and hope remains.

Wishing you a peaceful and safe Easter holidays. ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ€
