Yesterday, 26 May 2026, we received devastating news from Belgium. In Buggenhout, a passenger train collided with a school minibus carrying children with special needs to school.

Four people lost their lives: two children (aged 12 and 15), their 27-year-old supervisor, and the 49-year-old driver of the minibus. Five other children were seriously injured.

Erasmus+ Activities Began with a Minute of Silence for Eleni Karydi

Today, we officially started the 5-day Erasmus+ exchange “Youth in Action 4 Road Safety.”

The programme, which includes a wide range of daily activities, began with a minute of silence in memory of our dear friend and President of Ε.Υ.ΘΥ.Τ.Α ΡΟΔΟΥ - Παρατηρητήριο Οδικής Ασφάλειας, Ms Eleni Karydi, from Rhodes. Her organisation is also represented at the exchange by five students, who were deeply affected by this loss.

The opening continued with lectures by FEVR President Robert Štaba, Programme Manager of Zavod Varna Pot Kaja Kobal, and clinical psychologist Dr Urša Čižman Štaba, who addressed the challenges faced by both crash victims and those responsible for collisions.

💔 Dear friends,

Today, we received the sad news that Eleni Karidi, our dear friend and President of Ε.Υ.ΘΥ.Τ.Α ΡΟΔΟΥ - Παρατηρητήριο Οδικής Ασφάλειας (Rhodes, Greece) has passed away.

With her departure, we have lost a remarkable, compassionate and selfless advocate for the rights of road traffic victims, not only in Rhodes and Greece, but also across Europe and globally. Her warmth, wisdom, and the unique, almost maternal way in which she approached every individual, organisation, and high-level representative who could contribute to reducing the consequences of road crashes were truly exceptional.

When extraordinary people leave us, they leave behind a deep sense of emptiness. Yet Eleni also leaves us a legacy of values: unity, connection, and a constant search for solutions, which will continue to guide and inspire us all. She was a great light, shining even during her illness, always finding time for each of us, offering thoughtful advice and reminding us of the true value of life, human dignity, and the importance of educating future generations about safe and sustainable mobility.

Eleni was always deeply engaged in FEVR. She served as a Board member, organised General Assemblies, and was a strong advocate for a united organisation bringing together national NGOs supporting victims of road traffic crashes. As the founder of EFTHITA, she also believed in empowering younger generations — and thanks to her dedication and generosity, we are proud to have Tsampika-Rafaela Moustaka as an active member of the FEVR Board today.

On a personal level, I have lost a dear friend, mentor, and a person whose wise and heartfelt guidance was truly invaluable.

Eleni, you have left an indelible mark in our hearts and within FEVR. We will continue to follow the path you helped shape. “One voice of road victims” was your vision and your lifelong commitment and together, we will carry it forward.

Dear Eleni, thank you for everything.

FEVR on IRTAD 2026, Athens- Better Road Safety Data for Better Road Safety Performance

FEVR vice president Katarzyna Dobrzańska-Junco actively participated in Athens in scientific researchers conference IRTAD 2026 in Athens, Greece, hosted by a very friend of FEVR, professor George Yannis.

The presentation of the vice president concerned the influence of communication on road safety, reduction of the number of victims and methods of building partnerships to use the research data in order to achieve better results moving towards Vision Zero.

The objectives of the Conference are to discuss improvements in the quality of data systems and data analysis in IRTAD and other countries by fostering knowledge transfer among participants, with particular emphasis on road safety performance.

The conference aims to:

👉 Promote data-driven road safety policies and evaluation
👉Explore the role of emerging data sources in enhancing road safety knowledge
👉Showcase recent initiatives to improve the quality of safety data collection and analysis

We thank all the organizers for the event, researchers, scientists, amount of professional researches all over the world that help to understand better the data of today, in order to avoid more victims in the future:
"If we cannot measure it, we cannot improve it".

“People talk about statistics. For us, it was a name, a voice, a life.”💔🖤

For this mother, her child was never a number. It was a laugh she knew by heart, a future she dreamed about, a life that should have had so many more moments ahead. In a single moment on the road, everything changed. What remains is love, memories, and the unimaginable reality of learning to live with a loss no parent should ever have to face.

This is the invisible world of road traffic victims, a world that begins long after the crash, when families are left to carry the grief that statistics cannot show.

At FEVR, we share these voices because behind every number is a human life.

When the consequences of the most severe road traffic collisions mark your life, it inevitably takes a completely different direction from the one you had planned. As a rule, you are never the same again. Many professionals who encounter the “invisible world of road traffic victims” in their work are well aware of this, yet this understanding becomes profoundly different when experienced on one’s own life path.

Anne Lise understood and deeply felt this reality. She had a remarkable personality and was truly a great human being. Those who knew her understand that the word Human deserves to be written with a capital letter in her case. After the death of her son in a traffic collision, she devoted her life to supporting dignity, assistance, and the rights of people most severely affected by road traffic crashes, both in Spain (Pat Apat) and at the European level, particularly within FEVR.

I personally came to know Anne Lise as a strong moral authority, someone who stood up for every individual, even the most invisible among us. At that time, as one of the first representatives from Eastern European countries, I deeply needed support, understanding, a listening ear, a hand of friendship, and above all, to be heard. Anne Lise not only offered all of this—she expressed it sincerely and lived it wholeheartedly.

A special bond developed between us: I became her “temperamental Roberto,” and she became my “Viking,” generously sharing her knowledge on how to organize and develop support programs for people most severely affected by the consequences of road traffic crashes. Her knowledge, experience, and guidance continue to form the foundation of our work in this field today.
Perhaps you, too, have been fortunate enough to meet someone in life with whom few words were needed—a friendship was formed that endures and remains deeply rooted, even without daily contact. This was Anne Lise’s gift. And for this gift, I will always be grateful, my dear “Viking.”

On my own behalf and on behalf of FEVR, I extend heartfelt thanks to you, your loved ones, and my friends at PAT PAT for all the good you have done for all of us living with the consequences of road traffic crashes. I express my sincere condolences on the loss of such an extraordinary role model, humanist, human being, and friend.
It comforts me to know that people of your stature leave behind a profound trace and a lasting legacy, one that only truly great Humans can create.
