WIIS is dedicated to advancing the leadership and professional development of women in the field of international peace and security.

Women In International Security (WIIS – pronounced ‘wise’) in Brussels is an independent, non-partisan network organization, registered under Belgian law. It belongs to the world-wide family of WIIS chapters which are all dedicated to advancing the leadership and professional development of women in the field of international peace and security. WIIS Brussels promotes leadership training, mentoring, and networking programs as well as intellectual diversity through discussions on current policy challenges.

For its seventh edition, WIIS Brussels is delighted to welcome Ms Florence Raes in a conversation about how we can safeguard existing women’s rights against the global backlash on gender equality and about who and what has shaped her trajectory and connected leadership challenges that are unique to women.

Building on Florence’s experience across the United Nations, the European Union, and civil society amongst others, the conversation will look at how ideas translate into policy in practice, how institutions interact, and how individuals position themselves within this landscape. The exchange will combine personal insights with a broader discussion on current global priorities, including fragility, security and gender equality, without being confined to a single policy domain.

Therefore, this event is a chance to:

🔹Exchange on how we can safeguard existing women’s rights against the global backlash on gender equality and on the biggest challenges in the preparation of GAP IV and the new EU Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security

You may have seen that WIIS Brussels has officially opened applications for the 10th edition of our Mentoring Programme, but did you know we are also looking for mentors?

Our programme supports women active in , and . Through structured one-to-one mentoring and group activities, participants gain guidance, confidence and clarity to grow in their professional paths. The programme starts with a structured selection process to ensure the best possible match. After a short questionnaire and interviews, selected candidates are paired with a mentor (in your case, a mentee) and begin their journey with clear expectations and goals.

Becoming a mentor will allow you to develop new skills, enhancing your own skill set through the mentoring experience. You will also be able to refine leadership and management, as you improve your leadership and management style by mentoring others. Finally, and maybe most importantly, becoming a mentor is a great opportunity to share your expertise and experience, passing on your knowledge to the next generation, contributing to their growth and success.

It's time ✨

Though Summer is a worldwide favourite, WIIS Brussels really likes autumn and September, with its renewal, beginnings, and opportunities.

And as September approaches, we're coming to you with our latest opportunity, which many of you have been eagerly wiating for: the latest edition of our mentoring programme.

The WIIS Brussels Mentoring Programme supports women active in , and . Through structured mentoring and group activities, participants gain guidance, confidence and clarity to grow in their professional paths. It runs for six months and is built around one-on-one guidance between mentees and experienced mentors. Each pair, which is carefully crafted by our dedicated team, meets regularly in person or online and the cohort also gets together to bring mentees and mentors all into one space to exchange on their experiences.

So, what are the benefits of becoming a WIIS Brussels mentee? You will:
- Gain a Clearer Career Focus, developping a more precise understanding of the steps needed to advance in your field.
- Receive Constructive Feedback: obtaining essential feedback in critical areas such as subject knowledge and soft skills.

📢Listening to victims and survivors and meaningfully engaging them is an essential part of this. Their experiences can help us better understand what resilience, and prevention mean in practice, while keeping individuals, along with institutions, at the centre of our prevention work.

For those of us working in security, counter-terrorism (CT) and prevention and countering of violent extremism (P/CVE), the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism on 21st August is an important reminder that the effects of terrorism do not end when a certain attack is over. These devastating events continue to shape the lives of victims, survivors, families, and communities long afterwards.

On this day, we remember those whose lives have been forever changed by terrorism and reaffirm the importance of keeping their experiences at the heart of our prevention efforts.

🌇 Earlier this month, as the summer evening settled over Brussels, our Steering Committee, contributors and advisors came together for WIIS Brussels' annual summer dinner. Around the table, conversations moved easily between the work we'd done together this past year and the plans still taking shape.

It's this mix of people, ideas, and honest exchange that has carried WIIS Brussels through another year. And it's what we're looking forward to as September approaches, bringing new projects and, we hope, many more conversations like this one. 🥂

Tomorrow is the day!

Linda Robinson will be joining us at The Nine on the occasion of the publication of her recent book, Women in Power: Fighting for Democracy in an Age of Authoritarianism and our last spots are still available.

The discussion, led by our own Nad'a Kovalcikova will draw on Robinson's book, global case studies and first-hand insights, to explore how women leaders have shaped foreign policy, strengthened democratic resilience, and responded to complex security challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to engage on:
- the impact of gendered disinformation and online attacks on women in leadership
- the role of women’s leadership in strengthening democratic resilience and international cooperation
