Today, on Public Service Day, EUROMIL stands in solidarity with public service workers across Europe.
Quality public services depend on motivated and properly supported personnel. This also applies to military personnel and defence staff, who continue to face increasing expectations in a changing security environment.
Fair pay, proper staffing, social protection and investment in people are essential for resilient public services — and for Europe’s security.

EUROMIL participated in the ETUC mobilisation and conference in Madrid, where trade union representatives from across Europe gathered to discuss the future of the European social model, workers’ rights, public services, industrial policy and current economic and social challenges.

The event also provided an opportunity to exchange views on security and defence issues. For EUROMIL, discussions on recruitment, retention, working conditions and the welfare of military personnel remain closely linked to wider debates on social cohesion, public investment and Europe's future.

EUROMIL was pleased to include its Spanish delegates from AUME and AUGC Asociación Unificada de Guardias Civiles in the delegation attending the event.

Today, EUROMIL is present at the European trade union rally organised by the European Trade Union Confederation together with the Spanish trade unions Comisiones Obreras and Unión General de Trabajadores.

The mobilisation brings together trade union representatives from across Europe to call for quality jobs, social justice, peace, strong social dialogue and the protection of workers' rights. EUROMIL values the opportunity to engage with colleagues from across the European trade union movement and to ensure that the interests and rights of military personnel remain part of the broader debate on decent work and social rights in Europe.

As NATO leaders prepare for the 2026 Summit in Ankara, the debate is increasingly shifting from defence spending targets to a more fundamental question: can those investments be translated into real military capability?

In its latest article, EUROMIL argues that military personnel must be part of the answer. Recruitment, retention, working conditions, family support and military readiness should be at the heart of the discussions on the future of the Alliance.

Security is not delivered by budgets alone. It is delivered by trained, motivated and supported military personnel.

EUROMIL President Emmanuel Jacob is present in Amsterdam on invitation of FNV for the FNV Congress 2026, “De kracht van beweging”, taking place on 4–5 June 2026. The congress brings together trade union representatives and activists to discuss the future of work, social justice, solidarity and workers’ rights in Europe. EUROMIL looks forward to the exchanges with colleagues from across the labour movement. ✊🇪🇺

Together with Local Staff International (LSI), Emmanuel Jacob will contribute to the discussions with a session on the “Guidelines for the Rights & Protection of Local Staff”. Looking forward to an interesting day of exchanges on veterans, military personnel, and support structures.

As an organisation representing military personnel, EUROMIL believes AI can support defence and protection — but it should never replace human judgement, responsibility and accountability.
