🇦🇺 18ICOAF Conference in Sydney – Addressing Emerging Challenges for Armed Forces and Military Personnel

The 18th International Conference of Ombuds Institutions for the Armed Forces (ICOAF) in Sydney brought together international experts and representatives to discuss independent oversight, military personnel welfare, accountability and international cooperation.

A key message: "Operational readiness and the long-term sustainability of the military workforce go hand in hand."

EUROMIL contributed to these important discussions, highlighting the need to safeguard the rights, dignity and well-being of military personnel.

🇪🇺 Putting military personnel at the heart of defence!

EUROMIL held its 134th General Assembly in Naas, Ireland, on 9 October, bringing together military associations and trade unions from across Europe.

At a time when European countries are strengthening their defence capabilities, one message remains clear: investing in defence also means investing in the people who serve.

From recruitment and retention to working conditions, personnel rights and operational effectiveness, the discussions highlighted the challenges facing Europe's armed forces and the importance of meaningful social dialogue.

A valuable opportunity to exchange experiences, strengthen cooperation and ensure that the voices of military personnel are heard in European defence debates.

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has adopted a new Resolution and Recommendation on coherent veterans’ policies in Europe, calling for stronger and more consistent support for veterans, including healthcare and mental health, rehabilitation, transition to civilian employment, social protection and recognition of military skills.

Importantly, PACE also calls for the development of common European standards on the rights and well-being of veterans.

Ahead of the 2027 State Budget, the Portuguese National Association of Sergeants (ANS) is calling on the Government to prioritize the human factor in military spending. True capability requires investing in fair pay, better career progression, and stronger healthcare for military personnel.
As a member of EUROMIL, ANS contributes to the wider European debate on improving military working and living conditions and ensuring that investment in defence capabilities goes hand in hand with investment in the people who serve.

🇪🇺 Arrived in Strasbourg for the exhibition “Say NO to violence against women and YES to gender equality”, organised by the INGO Gender Equality Committee at the Council of Europe.

EUROMIL is pleased to contribute to the exhibition with photos and videos collected from our member associations, highlighting their engagement and work on gender equality.

The exhibition takes place in the framework of the 50th anniversary of the Conference of INGOs (CINGO), whose General Assembly and meetings will also take place over the coming days.

🇭🇺 35 years of HÉSZ – and a clear message for the future

The EUROMIL Board was in Budapest to celebrate the 35th anniversary of HÉSZ, our longstanding Hungarian member organisation.

HÉSZ President István Bazsik used the occasion to deliver a strong message: Hungarian military personnel want their rights back and want to be treated as they deserve.

Taking the floor on behalf of EUROMIL, President Emmanuel Jacob underlined that rights and conditions of service are also questions of defence readiness:

“There is no military readiness without personnel readiness.”

For 35 years, HÉSZ has continued to give Hungarian military personnel a voice despite major changes to its legal status and rights. EUROMIL was proud to celebrate this milestone together with our Hungarian colleagues.

We are looking for a Policy Officer under a paid, six-month Convention d'Immersion Professionnelle (CIP) to join our team in Brussels, starting 1 December 2026.

The Policy Officer will support EUROMIL's policy, research, and communication work on European security, defence, and social issues.
